I'm sure he'd be astonished, appalled, and delighted, all at the same time.

Jefferson would just be appalled.

Adams would just roll over and say, "I told you so!"

probably Reservists.
with Mortars.
BIG FUCKING Mortars..
not sure where the impact area is...
but the house jumps like an earthquake ...4.0-ish... about every fucking 90 seconds.

jeeeeeeeeeeeez-sus!
and the windows rattle and the lights flicker.

not kidding and not exaggerating either.

well, yeah.
I'm in town.
They are actually firing AWAY from us, but those are HUGE mortar rounds.
I can clearly hear them launching from the tubes: sounds like 10 ga. shotguns...
bwhop. bwhop. bwhop.
and then...
then..
Wha.a..m!! Wha.a..m!! Wha.a..m!!
about 6-9 seconds between launch and impact.

fuck.

Washing your hair for the first time after getting it cut short, when you had it grown out for a while, is a strange feeling. I used way too much shampoo, only when I had my hands in my hair did I realize there wasn't much of it.

Was that a serious question in an actual exam!?!? For what? Eight-year-olds maybe?

I mean... 3,4,5 was known as a rule of thumb by ancient Egyptian builders long before Pythagoras. How can anybody not reel that off in their sleep?

sadly, the "average" American high school graduate has ,what most other 1st and 2nd world countries would consider, a 9th grade education.  In some cases, "graduates" have 6th grade reading, writing and arithmetic skills.

Does their school actually publish class rankings?

That's so weird to me.  I know I come from a very different academic background (my school didn't actually have grades) but it just seems like that is asking for students to view each other as competition and to overvalue grades over actual learning.

Competition is healthy, having a metric to know where you stand amongst your peers and how you're performing is important I think.

That's ridiculous. What if different students are aiming towards different goals? Or starting from different points? What's far more important is knowing where you are compared to where you want to be, and how to get there.

I'm not quite sure what my "goals" were as a five year old, or at eight, beyond "make my parents and teachers proud of me." In Australian junior-school there was also "beat the little shits who make fun of me" and "do well in the State Selective Schools Test to prove to my arsehole teachers that I'm not stupid"*. There is a whole slab of education that everyone should master regardless of their life goals, and the notion that a young child is in a position to decide what they should or should not learn strikes me as silly. We have a saying: "Eat bitter; taste sweet!"

That's so weird to me.  I know I come from a very different academic background (my school didn't actually have grades) but it just seems like that is asking for students to view each other as competition and to overvalue grades over actual learning.
The implicit assumption here is that somehow good grades are divorced from actual learning. It is certainly possible for "grade focus" to be harmful if it leads to rote learning in high-school and beyond, but that has a great deal to do with poor teaching, bad test design, and poor incentive/assessment schemes for teachers. How much creativity is involved in learning functional literacy in your native language, or the sort of mathematics needed for  99% of later life?

MY children, however, are required to be in the top 5% of their class.
My parents would not have given you any argument. Except they'd have regarded your 5% as ridiculously over-liberal.

personally, I'm with NEKO in the HS math department: I barely passed Algebra II and Geometry.
and college level 'intro to Statistics"... I'd have better luck learning Greek from a Mandarin teacher.

the local schools only break down the top 25% of class ratings by 5% blocks.  And they only report the top 25%.  :(

Taking different courses may have something to do with it, as well.  I know I didn't rank as "highly" in terms of grades as many of my peers, but I was also taking far more challenging courses, including earning a bunch of university credit by the time I finished school.  Had I stuck with the "easy" courses, I probably wouldn't have been fighting with my parents so much about what the reports said because I chose to challenge myself.

My parents were just pleased that I passed >.>; I was... how do you say... a problem child? Albeit I completed High School in three years instead of four, but I don't think I ever passed a math class with higher then a C+. English and Sciences were in the Bs, then some art and PE that don't count. School was boring. The Marine Corps seemed much more exciting at the time.

I stopped taking school seriously once I stopped liking it in middle school. High school was fun, but I took very few classes that really challenged me and while I got pretty good grades, I probably could've done better if I'd...I dunno, tried. Same with college, really, I majored in something interesting but ultimately useless (BA in Classics, minor in philosophy). I finished four years ago and I've dropped out of both education and law grad programs once I realized I couldn't see myself happy in those fields. In regards to my parents, I used to be the type that would get mad at myself for getting a B, and my parents would tell me to be easy on myself, probably because a B was still good and I usually got As. In high school I stopped minding getting Bs and that continued into college, I guess. Not sure where I'm going with this but four years later, here I am with...a pretty good life, I guess? But nothing I could really consider a "career". Hell, I've never even had a full-time job (although my current job is pretty close to one).

For small children, the parents/guardians are probably the best ones to set the goals they want the kids to achieve, but it still seems weird to me that this would begin and end with "get more marks than 95% of the other people". Surely a goal like "learn to read" or "be able to count to 50" would be more useful?

I don't think it'll surprise anyone who has been around here more than five minutes to hear that I am opposed to the entire concept of grading children's achievement. There is a place for exams and rankings, but I don't think that place even starts to exist before the age of about 10, and probably not really until 15.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

My parents pushed me hard when I was young because they'd been told I would have difficulty keeping up with the other kids.  Turns out that may have been a misdiagnosis (???), and I did just fine.

Around here, universities keep track of graduation averages and student successes from high schools across the country.  It's always been known that getting good grades at certain schools is easier than at others, turns out those higher marks are quite meaningless.

My personal experience with school was being told mostly consistent B's with the odd lower and higher was good and then suddenly GCSEs (age 14/15) and how dare I get anything less than 100%. Most of my teachers expressed if it wasn't perfect then wasn't good enough. It made me totally give up because I was already working my hardest I got yelled at the same amount whether I got a B, C, D or failed so I didn't see the point in trying. It led to arguments at home because my parents, especially my Mammy, were frustrated with me for not doing work but to me their words just sounded like extensions of the teachers' "Nothing less than perfect" attitude at the time.

Yeah, fuck that specific school. I seem to just get more bitter about it as time goes on.

As a classic underachiever (crazy smart, shitty grades), I've always felt standardized schooling was a bit of a farce. I intended to homeschool my own kids, but ended up not having any.

Frankly leaving college and getting on with the world was one of my few wise life choices.

The real farce is in post-sec, where almost nobody gives a damn about education.

In College, I was completely fraked by Maths.  It was so bad that by the time I left I couldn't really add up properly and had to use a calculator for just about everything.

I've improved since then, but it took a few years before I got good enough that I didn't need to carry a calculator with me everywhere.  Still have some issues (multiplication etc)  but at least I don't need a calculator when I'm out shopping etc.

If you're in Amish country and you see a man with his hand up a horse's ass, don't be alarmed. He's just a mechanic making a house call.

Also holy fuck there is a GODDESSDAMN CLAIRE FACE EMOJI!

The ice bucket challenge is now moving within the theatre department and a close friend of mine has been challenged. I think I may be next.

I don't want to just dump ice on my head without donating, but I also have almost nothing to donate. I could probably fork over $30 or so?

The rules say if you skip the ice water you donate $100, if you do the ice water you donate $10
