That van looks like it's going to be used for Dekotora

In fact, considering the Japanese home in the background I'd say that's almost certain.

For some reason I feel like rereading Harry Potter... and I think I'll take the opportunity to read them in English since so far I only read them in German (and the last one not at all).

I read some HP in french and it's interesting to see the subtle differences between languages. I also read Matilda in about four different languages, which is a good way to practice comprehension - I know the story basically by heart now!

I may have used the wrong wording there. I guess I mean thesis. That makes it slightly less impressive, I guess. Still, a Harry Potter aided degree. Accio diploma.

Dutch language and lit, specifically Communication sciences, I think, is the best translation from the dutch 'taalbeheersing'.

I did a full course and a half course in uni in French lit.  It was cool, except when it was terrible (Proust, /shudder), but I can't really imagine wanting to read the same book in multiple languages.  Heck, if I wanted to read Les Mis, I'd probably search out the French version, because wondering how good the translation was would probably drive me nuts.

The difference between politeness and tact. “Imagine you inadvertently enter a bathroom where a woman is standing naked under the shower, Politeness requires that you quickly close the door and say, ‘Pardon, Madame!’, whereas tact would be to quickly close the door and say: ‘Pardon, Monsieur!’"

Hmmm.  Thought the test might be broken, but it didn't give me an F.  Then again, there were several questions I was not comfortable answering as true or false only - "sometimes", "maybe" or "depends" would have been better choices, but I suppose you can't have everything if you're going to be pigeonholed.

Makes sense, I guess. I don't avoid watching gay porn, because that's not something one has to avoid. You either watch it or you don't.

I read a book about social performance this summer which had a whole chapter on tact.  There was a whole section on tactfully receiving tact, here is a passage I loved enough to take a photo of:

Related, the book was recalled by the library, and I left my card in it with a note asking the desperate borrower to contact me, because if they were in such a hurry to read this book, the two of us probably had a lot we could talk about.  They never replied. :(

Got a 2. Huh. In retrospect, not that surprising, but that test relies on true/false answers when a maybe/sometimes answer would be far better.

Mods, can this part of the tread get shifted into DISCUSS/Trans*? I have a lot of feelings on this.

Part of my issue with that version of the test is the use of the word "repulsive". A 1 - 5 of Strongly Disagree to Agree would work better because there was a time when while sex with X person didn't appeal to me, I would hardly say the idea repulsed me.

Also when I did that test last year I got a 1 and this time I got a 3. Neat.

The art gallery of gunsmithing is not so much "Measure twice, cut once" as it is measure a couple hundred times. Cut and once. Measure some more then file to tolerance.

Yeah, the "measure twice, cut once" is carpentry, where wood is cheaper than rifled barrels.

Then again, as my grampa once said in the middle of a project, "Damn!  That's twice I cut it off, and it's still too short!"

Eh. Fucking up steel is just keeping iron miners and foundries in business.

The result of 5 and 1/2 man hours of blood sweat and tears today? A very shiny square. That's about it. I doubt I'm going to get a terribly good grade on this initial project.

I know my shop job has a policy about facial piercings, even though they're lax about tattoos, but I wonder if I only did the office job would those rules apply even though I'd no longer be officially on the sales floor. If they do I think I could reasonably argue my appearance is irrelevant when I spend my shift in an office in the back where no clientele can see me. It shouldn't matter anyway even when working with the public but I can't argue I don't interact with customers when I'm a server.

So we started a more practical application project yesterday, refinishing a shot out barrel that the instructors have laid about with hack saw and file. It's difficult, but far more rewarding to me then working on a random piece of bar stock. As expected, like in most things, once you get past the basics of the basics and start the real job things improve.
