Quoting from Popehat , "is torture effective' is a question that should be relegated to the same pile as 'is slavery economically feasible"

Random Thought: I just passed a sign that forbids me to drive faster than sixty miles per hour. God I love the autobahn.

Addendum: I'm not driving, don't worry.

It's just like Nietzsche's "he who fights monsters" bit.

Depends on things like road conditions, construction, traffic, etc.  At any given time, only 1/3 through 1/2 of the Autobahn isn't metered.

Jumping briefly back to torture, I give what amounts to a floor over to someone who probably has, of all of us a unique perspective on these matters. While I went through SERE training, which involves "enhanced interrogation techniques" like the ones described in the reporter (I went through most of the check list, got to skip the anal rape/rehydration though!) as did one or two others, and we do have some secret squirrel intell dweebs sneaking about, none of us, thankfully, have ever been in a capture situation. Very few men and women in many countries have. Especially as a POW or detainee. As such I give extra merit based on personal experience, to the words of former POW, Senator John McCain.

To quote Jon Stewart, Good McCain is back baby!

I'm almost with you about wanting the torturers' heads up on pikes as a warning to others, since doing things like that eliminates any sort of moral standing that we claim to have.  I can't see a single system of ethics where such a thing can be justified.  It's flat-out against virtue ethics (Aristotle's or Hume's), deontology, and Manning's concept of feminist care-based ethics.  Those who try to justify it according to utilitarian principles forget that it's bloody useless, and therefore any attempt to justify it on the matter of consequences is just bollocks.

Not all of it. Some parts have no speed limit, while others do, the most common ones being 100, 120 and 140 km/h.

I've never seen a 140 sign, but I've seen plenty of 130 signs.

The sign I was referring to was a 130 sign and I just thought that was 60 miles per hour. Curse you and your imperial units.

Random Thought: I will be seeing ChaoSera again, later this evening. There will be plenty of beers.

That's closer to 85 Masterpiece.

I do have an absurdly quick mind for conversions. Living in Spain, I have my date set up with the ISO standard (It is, after all, the right way to write dates), my thermometers on Fahrenheit and usually express height in ft. I like the numbers better that way, and I don't have a problem switching to the other system for somebody else.

That also leaves very little space for anything closely resembling useful in my head. Oh well.

Slight clarification: a few of them did. And at least one died of complications from HIV/AIDS.
