When you cross the equator and everything becomes upside down, do big endian processors become little endian and vice versa?

Does there need to be a separate discipline of Information Technology for the Southern Hemisphere?

Do computer industry workers there have SHIT jobs?

So the Super Bowl (the big American football game) is in Phoenix this year and they've converted downtown Phoenix (where I live) to a giant county fair that is impassable for people who, you know, actually live here. I will be happy when it's over and Phoenix returns to some state of normalcy.

OK, carry on.

So, we all know that birds are basically dinosaurs, right?  Biologically speaking.  It's one of those cool little factoids you have in your head if you surf the internet.  But you know what that means?

You can have a dinosaur sandwich whenever you want one.

Customer:"Excuse me, but I just want to make sure what sort of meat this is, especially after that whole horse debacle. This is just normal everyday beef isn't it? Not some poor old horse is it?"

Very Harried Butcher: "I can assure that it isn't that sort of meat, sir."

Customer: "Then what sort is it?"

Now Very Exasperated Butcher: "The sort that asked too many questions!"

(Dunno why, the conversation made me think of this old joke for some reason.)

Agreed, one ought to know what's in their food.  There are things like allergies, intolerances, ethical choices and whatnot that matter.  I still feel guilty (prolly mentioned this before) about using a dash of fish sauce in a dish I prepared for a vegetarian.

As Akima mentioned, it was an accident, and I didn't realise until later.  I basically made a giant batch of curry, then split it and added meat to the other for the omnivores, but I used the same base.

Precisely my point. I am uncertain that the fate of a slaughtered dolphin is worse than that of a battery hen. An atrocious end to an otherwise free life is difficult to compare with a "humane" end to an otherwise atrocious life. Food taboos differ from one culture to another, and we should be careful to ensure that we are judging the food-production process on the same standards by which we judge our own, not merely condemning the different tastes of weird foreign people. Would the slaughter of dolphins be OK, for example, if they were raised on farms, electrocuted tidily out of sight in abattoirs, and their flesh presented in convenient packaging on supermarket shelves? Would it be OK if eating dolphin meat were as traditional in our cultures as the eating of beef?

Yeah. Pigs are adorable, and more intelligent than dogs. Yet they're kept in small, dirty concrete pens their entire short and miserable lives while they grow much faster than normal due to weird genetic selection and force feeding, only to be slaughtered in ways that are often inefficient and painful. Killing dolphins the way it's presented to us in that doc is awful, but our western meat is definitely not any more ethically sourced.

Well, there are people in the west that object to food like lamb, veal, and pork.  Not as many as the number of people that object to eating dolphin, but they're still here.  Personally, I don't have a problem with the actual consumption of any kind of meat, though I can certainly understands the protests against unnecessary animal cruelty in the farming/hunting process.  Admittedly, I have very few moral or ethical objections to things that other people have serious problems with, so I'm a poor judge of this sort of thing, but I can see the logic in the various arguments made by others.  As far as I'm concerned, someone has the right to believe or protest against whatever they want, as long as they're consistent about it.  If meat is murder, don't just protest about the cute ones, and if murder is delicious, let people eat anything and everything, not just the meat that your culture deems acceptable.  PETA should throw paint on leather-wearing bikers as well as little old ladies wearing fur coats, and it's ridiculous to look down on a culture for eating certain kinds of meat when you enjoy a bacon cheeseburger.

I don't know if necessarily hypocritical, but they've gone down a path with an incredibly dubious message and seem unable to divert from.

And of course, if you eat meat, you can hold no ethical objections to the well managed, high welfare farming of cute little, playful, happy puppies for food.

I used to work with a guy from South Korea who said that I'd really love the taste of dog, and that they apparently *do* have food dogs raised as livestock and would be just as appalled as anyone in the West if anyone turned their pet fluffy into dinner.  Humans are quite good at compartmentalisation irrespective of where we're from.

I get easily confused when my sleep schedule is aligned in a way that there isn't a day-change while I'm sleeping. I keep confusing "tomorrow" and "today". It's now 12:38 on Saturday, and I need to be somewhere at 21:30 on Sunday. If I go to bed now I'll have a slightly shorter than usual day before I get up to go there.  :psyduck:

Some animals are also tastier than others.

Eh, I have my own ethics for meat and I admit they're not always consistant. My main view is that if you kill something you should eat it, dont just kill something to be a dick. And, if it harms the ecosystem (by eating it, not getting into cattle farming or whatnot, so like eating certain types of fish) then I dont do it (also if the animal is unjustly treated, but that's where my ethics get inconsistant).

Basically, I just refuse to eat veal, certain seafoods, animals with a threatened or close to threatened status, apex predators or domestic animals. I'm not joining any rally against those things though

I am a meat eater, albeit a hypocritical one (pigs and cows are cute, I could never eat one that I'd actually met but otherwise just wrap one of them in the other and I will eat it out of a dog's asshole if I'm hungry enough) but for some reason I find my hypocrisy comforting because I am aware of it. Oh well.

My girlfriend is a pescetarian and only eats animals she thinks she could kill with her bare hands in an 'in the wild' type situation. I kinda like that attitude.

I never really understood the point of watching the Super Bowl for the commercials.
Does anyone actually do that?

[raises hand]

The commercials and the halftime show.

Can't stand football, but the rest of the family enjoys it.  I leave the room and work on something else.

I don't actually care about football of any kind, and professional sport is possibly the worst industry of all for discrimination against women, so should I buy products advertised by companies that buy into this cult of male superiority? :-D

Who says I'm buying anything?  A good commercial is entertaining.  The cleverer, the better.

Which obliquely brings up another point: if you're dealing with an invasive species that's threatening an ecosystem (carp, nutria, etc.), then eating the invasive species should be allowed.

Of course, taking that to its logical conclusion, that would also mean cannibalism, so I'm aware there are some holes in that argument as well...  :psyduck:

It's PEEOPLEEEEEEEE

Yeah (the people stuff aside :D ) an example would be that while you're in the Gulf you're encouraged to eat lionfish. The little fuckers have no natural predators (although marine biologists are teaching certain sharks to eat them) and just eat so many other fish. They have poison needles so people think they're inedible, but as long as you remove the needles they're fine to eat.

PETA should throw paint on leather-wearing bikers as well as little old ladies wearing fur coats
Hostility to fur coats but not leather jackets, like hostility to fox-hunting but not angling, is more about class warfare, I think, than animal welfare.
