Come to think of it, the possibility does exist. Even more so now that there's disposable monocles too.

There are few words more hideous and repulsive than triple portmanteaus.

Uh...frexting isn't a triple portmanteau. It's just friend and texting. You can't say it's friend and sexting because you don't have any letters from sex in there that aren't in texting.

Also, everything else that's wrong with this!

Currently undertaking what may be my most difficult writing assignment yet, although I don't know why I'm having such a hard time with it.

I was awarded a scholarship for having the highest GPA in the theatre design/tech major. But to receive the money, I have to write a thank you letter to the donors. The donors in many cases are older alumni or generally wealthy donors. I have to write to the parents who set up this scholarship in memory of their daughter, who died of brain cancer over 20 years ago while a student here. And I'm seriously having a hard time figuring out what I'm supposed to say to sound gracious and respectful. And I want them to think that their money is going to someone who deserves it, but I can't be boastful.

This is difficult for me.

No matter how thankful you may be, and I'm sure you actually are, it's kind of hard to sound actually thankful if you're forced to write a thank you letter. You can replace thankful and thank you with sorry and apology and that's still true.

I totally understand why that's difficult but it's not actually how they determine who gets the scholarship, is it? If I had to guess, they do this so that the donors and parents have a personal connection with the people who their scholarship money is helping, which serves as a reminder that their actions helped make a difference for someone, and hopefully makes them feel good about their decision. Your letter doesn't have to be Nobel-prize-worthy to achieve that, so if you just put in an hour of effort you should be fine.

We bought a tipi. I realise that this makes me frighteningly middle class but it's an awesome thing. We went looking for a stove in a Nordic outdoors store which I think now seals my status as a tool of oppression. And not just a tool of oppression but a Tool of oppression. Come the revolution, I'll be in my tipi.

For that matter, why is the feminine form of actor "actress" and not "actrix"? (Like aviatrix/dominatrix)

Why would "actor" require a female form, when "doctor" does not (at least in English - dottoressa is a thing in Italian).

Fortress is the easy one, the -ess isn't a suffix. The word describes a fortified area. Fort in itself is a poor term as it translates simply as strong.

Actress/aviatrix is more complicated. Both are functional suffixes to denote a feminine form of thier root words. I suspect it's to do with the route each word took into the English language. Actress will have been about long before the advent of powered flight so if actrix existed it may simply have fallen out of use. Language is like that sometimes.

Of course the other interesting question is why didn't a feminine form of doctor make it into the language? As Akima points out, it has existed in other languages.

For the record, I see no need for feminised job/occupation/profession titles. The only exception being for awards like the Oscars where tge industry is under-represented by women despite equal contribution.

I agree, female forms of words are unnecessary, especially since it takes the main word and makes it male, instead of gender neutral. Someone who acts is an actor, right? But since actress is a word, people hear actor and assume male, which is a problem, since a woman who acts is still an actor.

Why would "actor" require a female form, when "doctor" does not (at least in English - dottoressa is a thing in Italian).

There's are two inter-related historical reasons, unlike the medical field in many societies, acting has had men and women participating heavily in it since the 1600s.

Second is that for occupations that have been historically male-dominated, "doctor", "lawyer", etc., once women starting working those jobs, they are pretty much doing the same things as men. Assuming your not a sexist, your going to believe that a female doctor is qualified to all the things a male doctor can do and vice-versa. But in theatre, there is still a gender separation because it generally determines what roles you'll play. Even today, when "cross-gender" casting has become somewhat common, you still can't do it without being seen as "making a statement."

I don't know if that makes sense to anyone except me, but yeah. Also those are just historical reasons for why the language is like that, and doesn't mean we still need separate terms today.

So? The roles may be different, but you're still both doing the exact same thing...acting.

Then again, actors act, but doctors don't doct*. Maybe that has something to do with it.

*I kinda wanna see a doctor (in lab coat because duh) doing the "haters gonna hate" walk with the caption "doctors gonna doct".

Nope, like you just said, the verb doctor has nothing to do with being a doctor. Although I have heard people use "lawyering", which is just weird, so I guess you can use "doctoring" in the same sense.

That's the attitude now yes. But again, women acting began in the 1600s, a time when a. the English language was still very fluid, b. parts written for women in theatre were very different, and c. views on gender were not exactly the same as they are now.

Habit. It's a common human trait that can be applied to a lot of things that aren't really in our best interests. It's more a case of why haven't we been motivated to change rather than why are we still doing it.

Nope, like you just said, the verb doctor has nothing to do with being a doctor. Although I have heard people use "lawyering", which is just weird, so I guess you can use "doctoring" in the same sense.

I feel like that definition of 'doctor' came from an earlier one where the word just meant 'to take care of.' I feel like I read in an old book somewhere about a person doctoring a wound. I'm pretty sure I read this before photoshop was a common thing, though I could be wrong.

If I'm right, it's just a matter of language shifting, and of words taking on new definitions.
