In the UK surgeons are called Mr and physicians are called Dr - this goes back to the times when surgery was a new thing, associated with barbers (previously) and grave-robbing for anatomical specimens to learn and practice on.  Surgeons were definitely not "proper".  I have no idea how widely this convention has been copied.

So even if they've been to medical school they're not called Dr.?

They are strictly Dr, but by convention as consultant surgeons they are called Mr - yes.  This is leaving aside the oddity that a medical doctor's normal degree in the UK is Bachelor of Medicine (MB) (or just possibly Bachelor of Surgery (ChB)) rather than a research doctorate.  Here we use the term doctor as the term physician is used in the US (it's also used here but not so much).

The more boring answer would be that Hyde was a cover identity Jekyll adopted and couldn't very well call that person "Dr. Hyde".

Saw a play based on the book once, was cool. Except the fact it was a bit awkward because I was there with my favorite ex and one of the actors was one of my past metamours from another relationship. But that aside, that play was cool. They had an inner voice of Jekyll, being portrayed by two women.

It is common, but not universal, in Australia. I think it is fair to say that the practice is declining as Australia emerges, hesitantly and slowly, from the shadow of the British Empire. :-P

I was tidying up some files that had accumulated over the years in a directory for later sorting out, and found the oldest files on my desktop - they are from 1989 (a DOS port of a finance program my first wife used on her Amstrad computer).

Random mental association during my current reading. Posted for no other reason than my inability to simply keep it to myself.

Quote from: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
"That's the Staatsoper," says Neumann Two one night. The facade of a grand building rises gracefully, pilastered and crenelated. Stately wings soar on either side, somehow both heavy and light. It strikes Werner just then as wondrously futile to build splendid buildings, to make music, to sing songs, to print huge books full of colorful birds in the face of the seismic, engulfing indifference of the world—what pretensions humans have! Why bother to make music when the silence and wind are so much larger? Why light lamps when the darkness will inevitably snuff them? When Russion prisoners are chained by threes and fours while German privates tuck live grenades in their pockets and run?

Opera houses! Cities on the moon! Ridiculous. They would all do better to put their faces on the curbs and wait for the boys who come through the city dragging sledges stacked with corpses.

Werner is having a bad day.

I immediately thought of this (translation further below):

Quote from: Wilhelm Kuchelbecker
O Del’vig, Delvig!
O Del’vig, Del’vig! Chto nagrada
I del vďsokikh i stikhov?
Talantu chto i gde otrada
Sredi zlodeyev i gluptsov?
V ruke surovoy Yuvenala
Zlodeyam groznďy bich svistit
I krasku gonit s ikh lanit,
I vlast’ tiranov zadrozhala.
O Del’vig, Del’vig! Chto gonen’ya?
Bessmertiye ravno udel

I sladostnogo pesnopen’ya.
Tak ne umryot i nash soyuz,

O, Delvig, Delvig, what is the reward
for poems and noble deeds?
What comfort is there, and where, for talent that lives
among villains and fools?
In Juvenal’s harsh hand
the sound of a whip threatens the villains,
and drains blood away from their faces,
and the tyrants’ power diminishes.
O, Delvig, Delvig, what is persecution?
Bold inspired deeds
and sweet songs
are destined for immortality!
And so our union will not die,
liberated, joyous, and proud!
Equally strong in happiness and sorrow,
the union of those who are loved by the immortal muse!

For awhile now, I've been a fan of the statement "I can't even"

But today was the first time I'd actually seen someone ask "How can you even?"

On a slightly related topic, I have a couple of friends who occasionally have an exchange such as the following:

Friend 1: "I loved that movie, it was so good."
Friend 2: "How good was it?"
Friend 1: "It was so good."
Friend 2: "Awesome!"

I know, small things etc.

I keep seeing people point out Trump and things he does as "not normal". I'm really not quite sure why that word keeps getting used. Doesn't "normal" just mean usual or common? How is pointing out that he's different helpful? Why use such a value-neutral word?

By continually pointing out that Trumps behavior isn't normal, they are trying to prevent it from becoming normal for a President to do what he has done/going to do in the future.

MoM might be referring to what John Oliver said about the US election, and taken out of context you can feel free to be condescending about it, but it is a call to action, saying that you can't just sit back and say "I guess this is our reality now." The point is that you can't just accept it and move on with your life like you might do if a normal president was elected, but that you have to keep reminding yourself and others that this is not normal, it's not business as usual, and it's not acceptable. The more people forget and ignore that "this is not normal", the easier it is for complacency to set in, and we want to prevent that. That's why "normal" is used, not because "abnormal is baaaaaad" but to emphasise that accepting it as such is a trap that we need to avoid.

I figure any more digressions on this ought to go in the election thread. As for this thread, here's what I'm wondering: if my body temperature goes down when I'm sleeping, why is it that every time I go to bed with cold feet, my feet are warm when I wake up?

Socks or no, my feet go from cold to warm. If I wear socks to bed, I feel the need to take them off at night because my feet are broiling in them.

Oxfordshire (specifically the village of Newington, a bit South-East of Oxford) was the coldest place in Britain last night (-7.5) and may be again tonight (-8).  But none the less I do not plan to wear socks in bed.

Would your feet warm due to being elevated and level with the rest of the body, aiding circulation? Combined with a blanket trapping heat around you and even with a decreased core temperature, extremities tend to feel external temperature more intensely?

I'm one of those people who has freezing feet almost all the time. I usually don't even feel it till they touch my Partner and they tell me to get my ice limbs away.

The first one seems like the best explanation. When sitting or standing still, blood pools in your legs, making heat exchange slower. Laying down flat probably speeds it up enough that your extremities warm up in a few hours.

Sure (but we like to be comfortable in this country).  Anyway, last night reached -9C here.

We only rarely have days that don't reach over freezing in the South of England; but it's been known - in my first winter (which I don't quite remember!), the thermometer here stayed below 32F (as it then was) for six weeks solid, from mid Feb 1947 to late March.

What is it about weather conversations that inevitably brings out Topper from Dilbert?

The English have been complaining about their weather since long before Dilbert existed.  We can complain about any weather, regardless of how routine it is, here or anywhere.

(I didn't write this:)

On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past.  For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."

The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking.  How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"

So God agreed......

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh.  For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.."

The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years?  That's a pretty long time to perform.  How about I give you back ten like the dog did?"

And God agreed......

On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family.  For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."

The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years.  How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"

And God agreed again.......

On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life.  For this, I'll give you twenty years."

But the human said, "Only twenty years?  Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"

"Okay," said God.  "You asked for it."

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.  For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.  For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.  And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
