BoJack Horseman
« on: 31 Aug 2014, 14:21 »

So, I just checked out this new animated Netflix series, Bojack Horseman. It's a cartoon in the vein of Family Guy, albeit a lot more sophisticated and less morbid, and at times a lot more serious. The humor is absurd and at times, imo, hysterically funny.

The setting is Los Angles, and follows the washed up 90's sitcom star Bojack, which also happens to be a horse (some people are animals, but not all). The main plot of the first season is about him writing a biography about his life.  Bojack is voiced by Will Arnett, and the rest of the main cast consists of Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie and Paul Tompkins.

You should check it out, it's some of the funniest stuff I've seen in a long time!  :-D

This looks great! I've got a rather stunted knowledge of good cartoons on air that aren't "classic" Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad or Bob's Burgers. This looks like another great one to add to the list.

Will Aaron Paul will be wearing beanie hats forever then?

Bojack Horseman surprised me so much. I was expecting a typical stoned animated college humor comedy but oh my god, the BLEAKNESS it's so so very bleak. I was not expecting the blunt punch to the emotional guts from this show. After episode six it really came into its own. Don't get me wrong, it's screamingly funny but I haven't had a show hit me that hard in a while.

I'm 3 episodes in and so far I don't really enjoy it. I like Aaron Paul and Allison Brie, but I'm not to keen on Will Arnett. The funniest thing so far as been Bojack getting it on with the woman that used to play his daughter and Todd getting pulled into it.

I do really like the opening though.

Keep watching 'till episode 11. Maybe it's just me, but I though that was the most hysterical episode of any TV show I've ever seen.

I watched it all in a day. I put it on expecting something funny to keep me entertained but it really took me by surprise with its serious moments. Got really bleak at the end. So good though.

Hmmm...

Oddly enough my experience is the same as Blue Kitty's.
Watched 3 episodes and thought "Nahh"

Started to watch "F is for Family" instead...

I wasn't sure about it, but then it became like an updated "Wait til your Father gets home!"
Held my attention at any rate.

May give BH another go.

Yes, same! When they teased the season as
(click to show/hide)
I almost passed out. I mean, how many more lives could this horse ruin!

But instead it somehow all worked out to actually be less heavy, perhaps the least heaviest season of them all, and that's including all the bonkers stuff with

. The evolution of all the characters, for good or for ill, remains some of the most well-written stuff on television.

This was also the first season that didn't make me cry, or have to take a break while binge-watching. In the word of Todd, "hooray!"
