I was thinking it would have been easy for someone to tell me it was my fault that my laptop was stolen because I left it unattended, not because I owned it in the first place. People tend to side with the victim of theft if it's an object that was stolen, but if their bodies have been taken advantage of (hacked nudes in this case, or rape), someone always criticises the victim for not having taken this or this precaution.
So no one should have nude photos of themselves or their loved ones? Or is it just celebrities, because they're a more obvious target for hackers than Jane or John Doe? The women hurt by this are mostly actresses or people with jobs that require them to be away from their loved ones for long periods of time, should they have to think about the risk of someone maybe hacking them when they want to snap a photo of themselves for their partners?
I'm in a long distance relationship, and I have sent nudes of myself to my boyfriend (and we've taken some together for viewing when we're apart). They're nice to have when you're missing the person you love, and I'm sure the celebs thought the same thing about their loved ones and their photos. Some of those photos were on my stolen laptop. I managed to lock it (thanks, Apple!), but who knows if whoever stole it found them. Is it my fault if those photos end up online? Or is it okay because I'm no famous, so I shouldn't have to worry about those things anyway?
Edit: Also, yes the photos were created with the purpose of being sent to somebody. Not with the purpose of being sent to everybody, but somebody very specific. Those women did not consent to having them shown to everybody with internet access.
