Ada, don't talk about reasons
Why you don't want to talk about reasons
Why you don't wanna talk
Now that you got everybody you consider sharp
All alone, all together, all together in the dark

Leave it all up in the air
Leave it all up in the air
Leave it all up in the air

Ada, put the sounds of your house in a song
Try to be speechless for a minute
If you think you're gonna faint, go out in the hallway
Let them all have your neck

Ada, don't stay in the lake too long
It lives alone and it barely knows you
It'll have a nervous breakdown and fall
Into a thousand pieces around you

Stand inside an empty Tuxedo
With grapes in my mouth, waiting for Ada
Ada, hold onto yourself by the sleeves
I think everything counts a little more than we think

Leave it all up in the air
Leave it all up in the air
Leave it all up in the air, yeah

Ada, Ada, Ada
Ada, I can hear the sound of your laugh through the wall

Ada, don't talk about reasons
Why you don't want to talk about reasons
Why you don't wanna talk
Now that you got everybody you consider sharp
All alone, all together, all together in the dark

Leave it all up in the air
Leave it all up in the air
Leave it all up in the air

Ada, Ada, Ada
Ada, I can hear the sound of your laugh through the wall
Ada, Ada, Ada
Ada, I've been hoping you know your way around

One night upon my mountain walls two miles below Fermoy
I met a farmer's daughter all on the mountains high

I said, "My pretty fair maid, my lot to meet you here!
All on this lonesome mountain your beauty shines so clear"

She said, "Young man, be civil, my company forsake,
For its to my good opinion I fear you are some rake."

"If my parents they should come to know
my life there were destroyed
For keeping of your company all on the mountains high."

And he said, "My dear, I am no rake brought up in Venus' train.
But I'm searching for concealment all on the lonesome plain."
"Your beauty so enticed me, I could not pass it by,
But it's with my gun I'll guard you all on the mountains high."

Now her cherry cheeks and her ruby lips they lost their former dye,
And she's fainted into his arms there all on the mountain high.
Now they had not kissed there once nor twice till she came to again,
And at that she asked him, "Pray tell to me your name."

"If by chance you ask for me, perhaps you'll not me find,
I'll be in my castle, enquire for Reynardine."
Sun and dark, she followed him, his teeth did brightly shine
And he led her over the mountain
The sly bold Reynardine.

Waiting for to be confessed
On the floor and all undressed
You can tell me go
Tell me I could stay
But I'll forget you either way
Remember when the house come down
And that dirty romance all around
I believe every word you say
But I forget you every day
When I'm laying on top of that woman
Kind of thing, child, could make me crawl
I mean skin and all
Out on the edge of some canyon
Where I just forget and you can't recall
Now you can't recall
Mama cry and Daddy moan
Starving in some trailer home
Want to burn it down
Burn it where you lay
While I forget you every day

Lovely, yes.  Reynardine

Totally! :) Thank you. The version I go to most often is June Tabor's one. (though Sandy/Fairport's version is obviously lovely in a different way!)

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

I bought a bottle of rum
after a day of boredom
I’m feeling rather glum
and so I chug till I’m numb

It’s a feeling of freedom
I drink my rum and I’m gone
I hear the music in my eardrum
come on and give me some

But is this really what I want to do today?
Is this really the only reason I stay?
So come on baby, take me away.

Another bottle of rum
This is the alcohol’s wisdom:
As long as you don’t succumb
keep drinking until you’re dumb

And is this really what I want to do today?
Is this really the only reason I stay?
So come on baby, take me away.

Some people want to have fun
or need a way to feel handsome
some just don’t like what they’ve become
and so they drink some more rum.

And this is really what I want to do today.
Is threre really a better reason for me to stay?
Get me more rum, and baby we’ll be okay.

I broke free on a saturday morning!

I put the pedal to the floor,
Headed north on Mills Avenue,
Listen to that engine roar!

My broken house behind me,
And good things ahead,
A girl named Kathy wants a little of my time.

Six cylinders underneath the hood,
Crashing and kicking,
Aha, listen to that engine whine!

I am gonna make it through this year,
If it kills me!

I am gonna make it through this year,
If it kills me!

I played video games in a drunken haze,
I was seventeen years young!
Hurt my knuckles punching the machine,
The taste of scotch rich on my tongue.

I am gonna make it through this year,
If it kills me.

I am gonna make it through this year,
If it kills me!

I drove home in the California dusk!

I could feel the alcohol inside me.
Pictured the look on my stepfather's face,
Ready for bad things to come.

Downshifted as I pulled into the driveway.
Motor's screaming out, stuck in second gear,

The scene ends badly, as you might imagine,
In a cavalcade of anger and fear,
I am gonna make it through this year,
If it kills me.

I am gonna make it through this year,
If it kills me.

A river that flows down a mountainside,
its hard not to get caught up in the tides.
Time is passing ever so slowly
I still remember the last time you told me
that this was it and it was over now.

I make do with my good friends
new things start when an old thing ends.
Its been seven years since you last called me
what makes you think that Id be happy
to hear from you, after all this time?

And Ill call you back later
Im not in the mood
Let me call you back later
it wont do me any good
Call you back later
when youre out my mind

Fresh water that washes everything away
I think by this riverbed Ill stay
I dont see the point why you try hard
you try so hard for a brand new start
when all I hold dear has happened after you?

So Ill call you back later
Im not in the mood
Let me call you back later
only if you have been good
Call you back later
youre not hard to find

Let me call you back later
Ill call you back later
when youre out my mind
after all this time?
Get out of my mind!

Time is passing ever so slowly
Its been seven years since you last called me
you hear a voice that answers hold the line.

When I was a young man I carried my pack
And I lived the free life of a rover
From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my Matilda all over
Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son
It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we sailed away from the quay
And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers
 We sailed off to Gallipoli

How well I remember that terrible day
How the blood stained the sand and the water
And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well
He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells
And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we stopped to bury our slain
We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again

Now those that were left, well we tried to survive
In a mad world of blood, death and fire
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
But around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit
And when I woke up in my hospital bed
And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead
Never knew there were worse things than dying
For no more I'll go waltzing Matilda
All around the green bush far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me

So they collected the cripples, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where my legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then turned all their faces away

And now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
And I watch my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reliving old dreams of past glory
And the old men march slowly, all bent, stiff and sore
The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask, "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question
And the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men answer to the call
But year after year their numbers get fewer
Some day no one will march there at all

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
And their ghosts may be heard as you pass the Billabong
 Who'll come-a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Time to Sondheim...

Running away- let's do it,
Free from the ties that bind.
No more despair
Or burdens to bear
Out there in the yonder.

Running away- go to it.
Where did you have in mind?
Have to take care:
Unless there's a "where,"
You'll only be wandering blind.
Just more questions.
Different kind.

Where are we to go?
Where are we ever to go?

Running away- we'll do it.
Why sit around, resigned?
Trouble is, son,
The farther you run,
The more you feel undefined
For what you've left undone
And, more, what you've left behind.

If you're blue and you don't know
Where to go to, why don't you go
 Where fashion sits?
 Puttin' on the Ritz
Different types who wear a day coat,
Pants with stripes and cutaway coat,
 perfect fits.
 Puttin' on the Ritz

Dressed up like a million-dollar trooper,
Tryin' hard to look like Gary Cooper (super duper)
 Come let's mix where Rockefellers
 Walk with sticks or umbrellas
 In their mitts
 Puttin' on the Ritz
 Puttin' on the Ritz

Have you seen the well-to-do,
 up and down Park Avenue
 On that famous thoroughfare
with their noses in the air
 High hats and Arrowed collars,
white spats and lots of dollars
 Spending every dime
 for a wonderful time

If you're blue and you don't know
Where to go to, why don't you go
 Where fashion sits?
 Puttin' on the Ritz

Green finch and linnet bird,
Nightingale, blackbird,
How is it you sing?
How can you jubilate,
Sitting in cages,
Never taking wing?
Outside the sky waits,
Beckoning, beckoning,
Just beyond the bars.
How can you remain,
Staring at the rain,
Maddened by the stars?
How is it you sing
Anything?
How is it you sing?

Green finch and linnet bird,
Nightingale, blackbird,
How is it you sing?
Whence comes this melody constantly flowing?
Is it rejoicing or merely halloing?
Are you discussing, or fussing,
Or simply dreaming?
Are you crowing?
Are you screaming?

Ringdove and robinet,
Is it for wages,
Singing to be sold?
Have you decided it's
Safer in cages,
Singing when you're told?

My cage has many rooms,
Damask and dark.
Nothing there sings,
Not even my lark.
Larks never will, you know,
When they're captive.
Teach me to be more adaptive.

The best ever death metal band out of Denton
Was a couple of guys, been friends since grade school.

One was named Cyrus, the other was Jeff.
and they practiced twice a week in Jeff's bedroom

The best ever death metal band out of Denton never settled on a name,
But the top three contenders after weeks of debate were Satan's Fingers, and The Killers, and The Hospital Bombers.

Jeff and Cyrus believed in their hearts they were headed for stage lights and Lear jets, and fortune and fame
So in script that made prominent use of a pentagram, they stencilled their drum heads and guitars with their names

This was why Cyrus got sent to the school, where they told him he'd never be famous
And this was why Jeff, in the letters he'd write to his friend, helped develop a plan to get even

When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you.

The best ever death metal band out of Denton will in time both out pace and outlive you,
Hail satan!
Hail satan!
Tonight, hail Satan!
Hail, hail...

In demon days, it's cold inside
You don't get nobody, people sigh
It's so bad, lasting far, but love yourself,
Hiding in a hole in there.
All the glasses are far too big bring it back, got to hold it back.
To let you do that yet you don't want me back,
Before it fall down, falling down, falling down,
Falling out to go far, far from the sun.

In these demon days it's so cold inside,
So hard for a good soul to survive.
You can't even trust the air you breathe,
'Cause mother earth wants us all to leave.
When lies become reality, you numb yourself with drugs and TV.
Pick yourself up it's a brand new day, so turn yourself 'round,
Don't burn yourself, turn yourself, turn yourself around.
Into the sun.

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door

 Feels like fire
I'm so in love with you
 Dreams are like angels
They keep bad at bay-bad at bay
 Love is the light
 Scaring darkness away-yeah

I'm so in love with you
 Purge the soul
 Make love your goal

 [1]-The power of love
 A force from above
 Cleaning my soul
 Flame on burn desire
 Love with tongues of fire
 Purge the soul
 Make love your goal

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
When the chips are down I'll be around
 With my undying, death-defying
 Love for you

 Envy will hurt itself
 Let yourself be beautiful
 Sparkling love, flowers
 And pearls and pretty girls
 Love is like an energy
 Rushin' rushin' inside of me

 [Repeat 1]

 This time we go sublime
 Lovers entwine-divine divine
Love is danger, love is pleasure
 Love is pure-the only treasure

I'm so in love with you
 Purge the soul
 Make love your goal

 The power of love
 A force from above
 Cleaning my soul
 The power of love
 A force from above
 A sky-scraping dove

 Flame on burn desire
 Love with tongues of fire
 Purge the soul
 Make love your goal

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door

Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy

And this is for the questions that don't have any answers
The midnight glancers and the topless dancers
The candid freaks, cars packed with speakers
The G's with the forties and the chicks with beepers
The Northern Lights and the Southern Comfort
And it don't even matter if the veins are punctured
All the crackheads, the critics, the cynics
And all my heros in the Methodone Clinic
All you bastards at the IRS
For the crooked cops and the cluttered desks
For the shots of jack and the caps of meth
Half pints of love and the fifths of stress
For the hookers all tricking out in Hollywood
And for my hoods of the world misunderstood
I said it's all good and it's all in fun
Now get in the pit and try to love someone

Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Love Someone)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Kill Someone)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Love Someone)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Come On)

For the time bombs ticking and the heads that hang
All the gangs getting money and the heads that bang bang
Wild mustangs the porno flicks
All my homies in the county in cell block six
The grits when there ain't enough eggs to cook

Been thinking about the lyrics to Opening Doors from Merrily We Roll Along and how they describe pretty much any creative job, especially the choruses:

We're opening doors,
Singing, "Here we are!"
We're filling up days
On a dime.
That faraway shore's
Looking not too far.
We're following every star
There's not enough time!

We're opening doors,
Singing, "Look who's here!"
Beginning to sail
On a dime.
That faraway shore's
Getting very near!
We haven't a thing to fear,
We haven't got time!

They're slamming doors,
Singing, "Go away!"
It's less of a sail
Than a climb.
That faraway shore's
Farther every day.
We're learning to ricochet
We still have a lot to say.

We're banging on doors, shouting, "Here again!"
We're risking it all on a dime.
That faraway shore's looking near again,
The only thing left is when,
We know we should count to ten
We haven't got time!
We haven't got time!

I bet you they won't play this song on the radio.
I bet you they won't play this new ng song.
It's not that it's or controversial
just that the ng words are awfully strong.
You can't say on the radio,
 or
 or
 or
You can't even say I'd like to you someday
 unless you're a doctor with a very large .
So I bet you they won't play this song on the radio.
I bet you they damn ng wellprogram it.
I bet you their program directors who think it's a load of horse .

There are days that you spend, you look back on the morning, it feels a million miles away
There are days that you waste, don't you wish you could slip back and cradle them, keep them all locked up and safe?
There are mornings and nights that I've missed more than you, that I've missed like a thought that's just starting to burn
And for all that it's worth and for all that I've loved you I've still got a few things I just won't return
I'll be there to hold you until all the altars are black and the rivers have died in their beds
But I'm living in something, and God only knows that I can't let it all waste away in my head
You look at me, look at me, tell me it's fine, and if so then it's fine for my own peace of mind
But if something is broken then wind all my clocks up, 'cause every mistake is just me running right out of time.

You know that I'm parched, God, I feel so dry, and I'm choking on questions like who, what, and why
while people around me are struggling just to get by,
And they've told me that normal is some sort of curse
they say it could always be worse
but honest to God, I don't care what they said.

'Cause I'm here in the summer, it's humid as hell, and winter's determined to kill me as well,
and if I just died up here, God even knows who they'd tell
And I sang with a hope that they'd read every note,
if you look you can see all the words that I wrote
on my heart, in this ocean, wrapped up in your coat
I was hopelessly trying to keep it afloat
and trying to live, though I feel like the dead.

And dear god, it's just everywhere sometimes, you know?
more vast and more dark than you thought it could grow
that disease always lying beside you in bed.
and I'll try, fuck, I'll try, 'til the sweet bitter end
that the both of us always saw coming, and then
I'll sleep, because living just feels like the dead.

I have left my pretty Saro, and I quit my mother too
I have started out to ramble this country on through
And when I get tired, I will set down and weep
And I'll think of my little darling wherever I sleep

It's not this long journey that I'm a dreadin to go
Or the country I come from, or the debts that I owe
There's just one thing that grieves me, and troubles my mind
It's leaving my little darling way back here behind

If I were a merchant and I could write a fine hand
I would write my love a letter that she'd understand
I would write by the river where the waters o'erflow
And I'd dream of my little Saro wherever I'd go

Oh Saro, pretty Saro please tell me your mind
Do you think me unworthy? Do you think me unkind?
When our life here is over you surely will see
I treated you as kindly as you treated me

Amlie lied to me, this was supposed to be easy
I found the one damn person to help me fall asleep in the night
But sleeping gets tiring, and dark reminds me of dying
And as long as this feeble heart is still beating
You will find me rushing through every room, switching on all the lights

The problem with falling in love in late night bars
Is that there's always more nights, there's always more bars
The problem with showing your lover your scars
Is that everybody's lover is covered in scars

Really don't mind if you sit this one out
My words but a whisper, your deafness a shout
I may make you feel but I can't make you think
Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink.

So you ride yourself over the fields and
you make all your animal deals and
you wise men don't know how it feels
to be thick as a brick.

And the sandcastle virtues are all swept away
in the tidal destruction, the moral melee
The elastic retreat rings the gloves of play
as the last wave uncovers the newfangled way

But your new shoes are worn at the heels and
your suntan does rapidly peel and
you wise men don't know how it feels
to be thick as a brick.

And the love that I feel
is so far away
I'm a bad dream that I just had today
and you shake your head and said "it's a shame"

Spend me back down the years and the days of my youth
Draw the leave and black curtains and shut out the whole truth
Spend me down the long ages, let them sing the song.

DADDY'S FLOWN ACROSS THE OCEAN
LEAVING JUST A MEMORY
A SNAP SHOT IN THE FAMILY ALBUM
DADDY WHAT ELSE DID YOU LEAVE FOR ME?
DADDY WHAT'DYA LEAVE BEHIND FOR ME?

ALL IN ALL IT WAS JUST A BRICK IN THE WALL
ALL IN ALL IT WAS ALL JUST BRICKS IN THE WALL

The song I sang for my wife at our wedding:

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

But I believe in love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

I like to listen to Adam & Joe
But I listen to the podcast, not the live show
I used to feel acute frustration
'Cos I couldn't join in with "Text the Nation"

Now all my troubles have disappeared
Because "Retro Text The Nation"'s heeeere
And now my letter might be read out
Instead of chucked in the bin and forgotten about

LOVE this song. One of precious few that I can play on the piano, and well (it's an easy song to play).

One of the most killer opening lines in music history.

Someone to hold you too close.
Someone to hurt you too deep.
Someone to sit in your chair,
To ruin your sleep.

Someone to need you too much.
Someone to know you too well.
Someone to pull you up short,
And put you through hell.

Someone you have to let in,
Someone whose feelings you spare,
Someone who, like it or not,
Will want you to share
A little, a lot.

Someone to crowd you with love.
Someone to force you to care.
Someone to make you come through,
Who'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
Of being alive,
Being alive.
Being alive.
Being alive!

Somebody hold me too close.
Somebody hurt me too deep.
Somebody sit in my chair,
And ruin my sleep,
And make me aware,
Of being alive.
Being alive.

Somebody need me too much.
Somebody know me too well.
Somebody pull me up short,
And put me through hell,
And give me support,
For being alive.
Make me alive.
Make me alive.

Make me confused.
Mock me with praise.
Let me be used.
Vary my days.

But alone,
Is alone,
Not alive.

Somebody crowd me with love.
Somebody force me to care.
Somebody let me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive,
Being alive.
Being alive.
Being alive!
