Graphics card upgrade advice
« on: 06 Oct 2014, 12:50 »

Wotcher!

The 8800 GTS in the Ginger's computer finally gave up the ghost and, though I haven't tried to bake it in the oven to revive it as a GFX Golem, I'm in the market for a new one. Looking for something comparable to that card in performance, and the chipsets I'm trying to decide between are

- Radeon R7 250 (specifically PowerColor Radeon R7 250 OC GDDR5 HDMI 1GB)

- GT 730 (same price) or GT 740 (ca $30 more).

The radeon is a couple of tiers higher but not sure which card is better overall (wrt power consumption, heat, noise, reliability, game support etc).

Games that may be played: GW2, Divinity, Diablo, that sorta stuff :o

Any and all help appreciated! If I succumb to temporary insanity I might go for a GTX 750 Ti of the variety that doesn't require an extra power connector :o

What I did was I grabbed an old PSU, wired it so it'd be automatically on and used 2x molex (4 pin oldschool) -> 6pin adapters for my more powerful two connector graphics card. If your PSU is powerful enough as is, you might as well just get one of those connectors and use it as a second 6 pin.
