Willis also explicitly said multiple times on his blog that she's trans: http://itswalky.tumblr.com/post/77258023970/is-carla-going-to-be-transgender-in-the

And, he spelled out her living situation: http://itswalky.tumblr.com/post/91020669312/i-was-just-wondering-if-carla-had-any-problems

So, not just an interpretation, it's word of author.

Am I wrong in thinking Becky doeasn't seem willing to admit why she's there? I mean, she's making like it was totally her decision to visit Joyce.

I'm sad for Becky. I've been sad for Becky this entire party.

She's as far out of the sexuality closet as is possible; she's nuked the damn thing from orbit, yet she's still hiding behind this 'crazy, irresponsible Becky' version of herself. She might be crazy and irresponsible usually, but her lack of clothes isn't related to that.

Poor Becky, jumping from one fictitous public persona to another...

They are trying to hide that she's there indefintely and pretending she's only visiting so she doesn't get kicked out, meaning she'd have to go to her parents or be out on the street.

FWIW, with Sal having left without colliding with Amber, I've got a feeling that the party arc will be mostly about Becky realising that anything is better than staying with Joyce where everything makes her miserable.

I really hope Becky's and Joyce's friendship will survive this. I mean, they've both changed a lot since starting college and that can lead people to question whether they are still compatible with their old friends, but I hope those two can stay friends and use their increased tolerance and broader world-view to embrace their differences and changes in each other's lives.
Actually, Joyce has already shown a strong willingness to question her previous beliefs in order to support Becky and have their friendship stay as intact as possible.

I think Joyce should take Becky to see Leslie. I'm sure she could provide some help herself and point Becky towards organisations that help young people who have broken off contact with their families.

There has to be a third option. It won't be easy, but she'll probably have to go off on her own at some point. I can't see her going home.

One option for Becky that occurs to me is for Joyce to try to try to convince Becky's dad to let her transfer to the college (is it Indiana State?). Say that she would 'keep an eye' on her (which she would - no guarantees about outcomes, of course). If he cares about his daughter at all, Becky's father is probably frantic at her disappearance and, for the benefits of her not ending up homeless and worse, I think that he would be willing to leave her in Joyce's care.

That Joyce has no intention of 'curing' Becky or whatever doesn't need to be discussed. In any case I'm pretty sure that Joyce and her parents would likely be very dogmatic that any changes Becky makes to her lifestyle must be those she makes of her own free will or they would be worthless pretences.

However, thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that Becky's dad will track her down sooner rather than later (it doesn't take a genius to work out that she'd run to Joyce). At lot then depends on what nearly losing her to an uncertain fate because she was frightened of him does for his viewpoint. It is even possible that he'll let her re-enrol in her original college rather than risk a breach in what is left of his family.

At least, I hope that he tracks her down and cares enough about her future to care what happens next. The alternative is just too depressing for words. Although Becky ending up effectively a ward of the Browns would probably make decisions about her future easier, it is tragedy that I don't think any reasonable person would want to see happen.

I don't think Beckys father is capable of change - he strikes me as one of those right wing religious nutjobs that simply ignore or twist the truth no matter what you say or do.

Going to Leslie might be the best idea at this point.

Mad idea that came to me after binging on Fallout 4 speculation and lore yesterday: Fallout: Indiana Summer; Joyce and her friends as characters in a deliberately lighthearted and parodic version of the Fallout world (although, arguably, Fallout is a deliberate self-parody).

Straw Poll:
Will Billie...

1) Spill all to Ruth as soon as she sees her?
2) Spill all to Ruth during drunken pillow talk?
3) Keep Becky's secret and be consumed by the guilt of 'lying' to her GF?
4) Take pride in doing something that she feels is right, no matter the personal cost?

I'm voting '2' with Becky suffering less as a result than Joyce and Billie.

I know not how much of my approval is linked to growing up in a scientifically-minded family surrounded by biblical literalists who swore by a seven-day creation despite no physical evidence to support what Moses CLEARLY wasn't around to witness, but this makes me happy.

I like Dina; I have happier feelings than apathy towards Becky. This whole interaction makes my night more cheery.

I think it is nice that Becky is reaching out. I just hope that she isn't going to push anything too quickly. Any friendship with someone like Dina has to be entirely on her own terms and on her own schedule to work. I think it would be worth it because it strikes me that she is simply too emotionally unsophisticated to ever be anything but a true friend. Besides Becky desperately needs someone other than Joyce (who, bless her, can be smothering when she's worried) and Dina really needs to stretch herself socially; I can't imagine a more challenging subject who could be trusted to be nice to her.

Beyond that? Well, that would be a bit of a psychological black hole. I have no doubt that Dina knows perfectly well what sex is. Whether she would ever be able to understand social cues and emotional contexts sufficiently to interpret a come-on correctly (or even deliver one unambiguously) is questionable.

Dina's an Ace.

The natural ship for Becky is Daisy.  The two are practically twins.

Dina's doing better than I ever did.  The only time a woman expressed an interest in talking to me I reacted with confusion.

I'm thinking that Becky isn't really taking any of this in, rather is just enjoying looking at Dina's face whilst not worrying about the noises coming out of her mouth.

I'm also really surprised that Dina is holding such an aggressive grudge against Joyce. Nothing quite so irrational as a human, I'm thinking.

The final chapter of this Book of DoA is titled 'Walking With Dina'. I'm pretty sure that today's strip is in some way part of a scene-setting for this.

IIRC, David Willis has said that one of the turning points in his life was confronting the dichotomy of his childhood beliefs against what science says and finding the former wanting. I'm wondering if the next book will be Becky and Joyce going on the same journey (with a more comedic frame of reference, of course).

The part where she says she's never experienced sexual attraction before, and is in college? That her only interest in it is in a clinical sense?

I'm not reading the current pages as her expressing any kind of sexual interest in Becky. Joyce has already said she thinks the Earth is only 6000 years old.. Something that is rather at odds with well.. everything to do with being a paleontologist. So yeah.. there's the joke about 'saving' Becky from the same sort of beliefs, since they come from the same background being the joke.

I dunno, I mean, about half the panels they've been conversing, Dina had a jacket over her face.

My opinion is she's listening mostly as a way to distract herself from the situation with Joyce, with her suddenly being homeless, and likely other things. She just wants to talk, and to listen, and normally Joyce would be there, but Joyce has new friends.

As to shipping, I should clarify, I was joking.

I think that today's comic has Sal's life at a turning point. If she messes up Malaya, Marcie may dump her, not wanting such a person as her friend. I have a bad feeling that, without Marcie to help her control her impulses, Sal may go off the deep end and try to destroy her own life in a massive acting out for attention and affection.

Naturally, doing this will just ruin her life and leave her future in serious doubt; how many academic suspensions/demerits can she rack up before the college throws her out? I honestly wonder if Sal will be the first would-be suicide that Amazi-Girl talks off a ledge.

I was about to type up something saying that was way too fucking dark for this.

Then I remembered what comic we were talking about.

I don't know. My feeling is more that what you're predicting, with Marcie abandoning Sal, but I don't know about the 'acting out for attention.' She has a history of that, but people don't repeat every one of their mistakes, especially when that mistake changed their life in such a drastic fashion. I don't think we'll see the Sal that robbed a convenience store, but we might see a Sal who opens up to new people more. Just Marcie's distance lately already has her coming to Joyce's dorm party, giving out details of how she lost her virginity.

It still could end the way you said, I mean, it's... it's big when your best friend in the world is suddenly not there, it must be so much worse for them to be there, pretending you aren't.

Really? You think this comic would go that far?

Joyce was nearly raped.
Sarah's last roommate was a drug addict.
Amber's dad abused her, essentially abducted Danny to use him as bait, and was put into the hospital by Amazi-girl's furious beating.

There's more, I'm sure, but the point is, Willis isn't afraid to go dark.
This ain't Garfield.

I dunno, Garfield's gone to some pretty dark places. Remember the one where we find out where Garfield hates Mondays? Tragic.
