Honestly, someone bringing up the party incident is more than enough to put her on edge. She is not ready to deal with what Dina has to say, because she doesn't know if she can believe it or not. She shut down the party convo for obvious reasons, so when science stuff gets brought up--as it's already an established touchy subject for her--it was better for her mental health just to shut that down, too. That's what happens sometimes when you get anxious. You get antsy and irritable. Her brain doesn't have room for stuff like that right now. She just needs a bit of room to talk about something that doesn't make her uncomfortable. I think that's reasonable.

I think that Joyce is about to have a very painful encounter with reality. She's a good soul but she has to be made to understand that she doesn't have the answers. Maybe it will help her develop a better understanding of feelings and the wrong impression her easygoing intimacy gives some people without her intending it.

I'm waiting for Sal to get a weird feeling that something is amiss. Wasn't her roommate 'Billie' rather than 'Becky'? Since when was she a redhead? I'll laugh if this turns into a mini-arc in its own right!

Sal and Billie have known each other since childhood so I don't think she'll confuse Billie and Becky.

I've been wondering if Becky might move into Billie's room since it was revealed Becky ran away but wasn't sure if it would actually happen.

Sal and Billie have known each other since childhood so I don't think she'll confuse Billie and Becky.

So I understand. That said, it could be done, comedy-of-errors style. It would require that Sal doesn't actually meet her new room-mate for some time due to incompatible schedules. She's trying to work out why everyone keeps calling Billie 'Becky' ("That's Becky's room!") and why there are red hairs on her pillow in the like. It could build to a comedic climax when Sal refuses Becky entrance to the room on the grounds that it isn't her room to sleep in and Billie has to be called to untangle the resulting confusion. This, in turn, gets Ruth involved. Naturally this leads to public exposure of Becky's situation and Billie's new domestic arrangements.

I mean... Maybe it's me. Maybe I watched to many Carry On... films and it has permanently stuck my humour sense on 'madcap'. If this were 'Shortpacked', it would me more likely, I guess.

Yeah, Joyce even went so far as to utter Famous Last Words, just to emphasise that the whole project is doomed to failure.

I've been waiting for Ruth/Billie to blow up in their faces more-or-less since they made what sounded horribly like a suicide pact.

Not physically, but recall the roommate agreement arc that went on for like 100 strips at the beginning of the comic because Sal and Billie were NEVER in the room at the same time.

Had a similar situation sophomore year actually, I'm a theatre major and he was an art major. He had studios and classes in the morning and I had all my classes in the afternoon, and then rehearsals. Between debate team and other clubs I pretty much never went back to the dorm for any purpose during the day. And he was always either already asleep or out somewhere when I got back, usually around 11 PM. I don't recall if we ever got the damn thing signed. Fortunately we had a pretty negligent RA and it didn't end up mattering.

That's an even more overt statement of a suicide pact, even though the previous comic I linked outright said "sexy lesbian suicide pact".

I've got to say that it's kind of sad. The implication really is that Ruth is having trouble imagining why anyone would want to hold her hand in an affectionate way.

Assuming that she survives college, I suspect that Ruth will be the lynchpin of some psychiatrist's career. She is in a mess.

Meanwhile, I wonder if having a mischievous and much younger girlfriend may help her at least get out of her emotional dysfunction. Just keeping up with Billie will doubtless stretch some hind-brain 'muscles' that she hasn't used for a while.

I'm not sure about the 'I only feel anger' thing. She could seriously hurt someone if she has a rage incident.

I wouldn't say much younger. Most RA's, in my limited experience are still in their early 20's, still students. I'd estimate Ruth to be at her oldest, 22, more likely 21.

Still a significant age gap, with Billie being either 18 or 19, but 'much younger' seems an exaggeration

Still possible. I don't recall whether she clarified, but I'd be surprised if her school allowed that, mostly because it means MY school allowed it, which could well mean I was older than my last RA. I figured we were about the same age.

Why would you being older than your RA be weird at all? At my school, anyone who wasn't a freshman could be an RA.

Also, I always got the vibe (if it wasn't directly said) that Ruth was drinking underage as well.

Well part of it's the fact I'm 22 and I still look, and get treated like I'm 16. I got carded for buying Shaun of the Dead. I almost had the cops called for buying beer one time. It's that thing where when people treat you like you're younger, after a while, you just assume you actually ARE younger, regardless of facts. That, adding up, I assume everyone in any position of authority just be default MUST be older than me.

Heh, fair enough. I look both younger and older than I am...somehow. It depends on my beard.

I feel my facial hair works against me, but that's my opinion, it doesn't seem to match up with people's expressions/responses to me buying age-restricted items. I'd say the significant hairless patches beneath my chin would give me away, but I guess my not-impressive height and tendency to stare at my feet and hands helps me out there, because all they see is my shitty 'stache and possibly the less-shitty goatee that happens naturally after a few days.

This is off-topic, so I'm going to also say that today's comic gave me a lot of feelings. I know the feeling Rose is describing, it's the same thing I felt back in 2011, when I started giving serious thought to killing myself. I didn't have a Billie; I was isolated as hell, miles from anyone who wasn't related to me and without a car. I got saved by procrastination, but considering Ruth's tried once already to off herself, I feel like that's not a problem she has.

I don't think it's a popular opinion, but I really like Ruth. There's more to her, I think, than she lets her floor know, with the exception of Billie. She acts so tough, but I get the sense from comics like today's that it's because she feels so weak against herself. That interpretation works in sync with how aware she is of her alcoholism and tendency to give in despite that awareness, giving her self-hatred that much more fuel. She also doesn't like being told things about herself and her motivations, hence her response to Billie. She'd probably beat the shit out of me if she read this. Then, she'd go to Billie for comfort and not actually tell her exactly what upset her.

I know that Amber has fallen for Danny in a big way but I'm starting to question just how healthy he is for her. It seems pretty clear to me that he's exacerbating the divide between the 'Amber' and 'Amazi-Girl' psyches. I'm not sure that he appreciates just how dangerously damaged that Amber is and is just treating this as a make-believe game with his girlfriend liking to dress up to play dom with him.

"Probation, suspension, and even expulsion."

Um, does Amber think that they go to BYU? Or maybe IU/Indiana law is different. But for a first-time underaged drinking offense here you just get a large fine that will probably make your parents very upset. Civil/criminal penalties aside, I've only ever heard once instance of a repeat marijuana offender getting a two-semester suspension.

EDIT: I decided to do some digging and Indiana vs. North Carolina law is very different. So I have to give deference to Amber a bit on this one.

North Carolina:
Misdemeanor on permanent criminal record
Up to $200 fine and court costs

Indiana:
Driver’s licenses suspended for up to one year.
May be sentenced to not more than 60 days in jail.
Fine of up to $500.
The judge may order you to participate in an alcohol treatment program.

To satisfy my curiosity and boredom further, I decided to look at campus policies as well.

"Indiana University will discipline students and employees who violate this Alcohol and Drug-Free Campus Policy up to and including expulsion...and/or referral for prosecution. Discipline may also include the completion of an appropriate rehabilitation program."

My university (first offense) - Written Warning
Referral to Wellness Center
Service Fee ($100.00)

So basically Amber is completely right and ignore what I said at the beginning of this post.

As someone who lives with mental illness and has dated people in the past who either exacerbated or enabled my more self- destructive tendencies, I agree. Danny seems to mean well, but  I dont think he realizes how troubled she is. He thinks it's fun and romantic dating a super hero. Amber seems to be getting worse, not better. For example, the 'voice' started out as a trick to keep him from recognizing her, but now she's using it as a hard indicator of the growing division between the two personalities. What started out as a form of conscious sublimation is getting more out of her control.

Ambers split personality is confusing to Danny I think.

Got help him if he hurts Amber though, Amazi-Girl's liable to go Postal on him like she did with her douchebag of a father if he goes too far.

Holy shit, Indiana.

Also, the fact that IU will refer you for prosecution is the crazy part. You won't get referred here until your third alcohol-related offense, which is also the first time suspension even enters the picture. Hell, they won't even refer you until your second marijuana offense. It makes me wonder if IU has a super-conservative Board of Trustees or something.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. Yes, Danny is causing his own problems but there is a slip in today's strip (7/9) that suggests that Danny is also a unifying anchor between Amber's two personae; her feelings for him may enable her two parts to function together more closely.

It's still early days; I guess we'll just have to see where it goes!

New chapter!  I think it's gonna be a fun one.  Unless Becky's parents show up?  You'd think someone would've happened on that front by now.  Unless Willis is saving things for Book 6, Chapter 1: To Those Who'd Ground Me...

Also, brontosaurus and brachiosaurus are the only names I recognize in that last panel.  I am not dinosaur-savvy.

Look at Dina's bottom right thought bubble in the last panel.

I may have squee'd audibly.

From panel 3, I'm assuming that Becky and Dina smuggled last night.

Yup. Gotta sneak those dinosaurs into the country somehow.
