Wait, wait. I know DoA moves slow, but Becky's only been there for a weekend?

Long weekend.  She showed up on Thursday night, went to classes with Joyce and out for sushi with the gang on Friday, organized the party on Saturday.  Today is Sunday.  One day per chapter, each chapter three/four months our time.  More glacial pace than QC, but better plotted.

When I read today's strip, the first thing that came to my mind was: "Calm down, Joyce! Breathe and think, girl!"

Arguable.

That being said, I never noticed the "day per chapter" thing. Counting the chapters, it means they're on day 24.

Well, there have been a few time-skips, but yeah, it's basically one day per chapter.  Someone made a helpful timeline.

WALKY!

Sometimes, I wonder if this is just play-acting on his part in a desperate attempt not to be taken seriously and thus not trusted and required to do work. The alternatives seem  to be that he is either aggressively lazy and actively seeking to be useless or that he has a huge entitlement complex that forms the center of his self identity.

One wonders what Dorothy sees in him! He must be great in the sack or something!

Given the way his parents treat him, how could he NOT have a fundamental sense of entitlement? He's never had to work for anything in his life.

Yeah, it's definitely the latter. I don't think Walky even knows how to be deceptive or subtle. He is the Golden Child of his family. He's never had to work for anything. Grades, success as a child actor, overly doting parents to the point where they pretty much disown his twin. He is right now an example of the entitlement addled man-child who still hasn't quite gotten that he can't just effortlessly coast though life the way he has up until now. Mostly because everyone lets him get away with his shit and thinks it's charming.

Walky is very intuitive and probably has a very high potential intelligence. However, a combination of personality and bad upbringing makes him behaviourally dumb.

He's good at figuring stuff out, he just doesn't do anything about it. Like Ben said, very intuitive, but he's just got a personality to make him look like an idiot, and he really doesn't care. Dumb genius would be the designation, I think

I think I really understand what Ethan is saying here. He seems worried that he might end up being a role rather than a person, due to common perceptions as to what a gay man is and is not supposed to be.

In the end, he wants to be 'Ethan, that nice guy' who happens to be gay. He doesn't want to be 'that gay guy Ethan'. You can contrast this with Becky who has an entirely opposite viewpoint - she wants to be in everybody's face. It's basically an expression of their own personalities. Some want to shout it from the rooftops; others want it to be just their business and be as 'in the closet' as they please.

Onto a different subject; I've been thinking about this for a few weeks: If I understood Dorothy correctly, The Kinsey Scale runs from zero to six with '0' being entirely hetrosexual (with no queer leanings at all) and '6' being entirely homosexual (with no hetro leanings at all). I've taken a stab at where various DoA characters lie on that scale (where sufficient evidence exists to make a guess).

Joyce - 1 (She seems to have some very mild homoromantic feelings towards Sal and Dorothy);
Dorothy - 0 (Dorothy, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any leanings in that direction);
Danny - 2 or 3 (I might attract flak for this; whilst he's bi enough for it to intrude into his subconscious, he seems, at the moment, more hetro-inclined);
Ethan - 5 (Again, I'm expecting this to create debate. It is difficult not to have my perceptions of Ethan corrupted by his 'Shortpacked!' counterpart; he is gay but it isn't inconceivable that he can feel a certain tender romantic feelings towards women);
Becky - 6 (Becky's personality makes it difficult to judge sometimes but she hasn't shown even the slightest hetroromantic inclination to date);
Dina - ? (Dina's strange social disorder makes it difficult to judge. I can see why some considered her an aesexual and it is entirely possible that her feelings for Becky are entirely romantic with no sexual component whatsoever)
Walky - 0 (Although his personality means we can sometimes wonder if he's a '3')
Sal - 0 (Although Sal is cryptic and emotionally damaged enough that there is some measure of uncertainty about how her feelings determine her sexual behaviour and vice-versa).

Btw, it's zero to six, not zero to seven (although you do later correctly say 0 to 6 later). But Danny being a 3 would put him exactly bi, while a 2 would make him only slightly preferring women.

And, X is also a choice, for asexuals.

And, the Kinsey scale also only includes sexual attraction, not romantic attraction.

Asexuals subdivide into romantic, and aromantic.  Romantic asexuals will desire relationships with other people, just not have any desire for sex.  Aromantic asexuals don't desire any relationships with other people.

It's cute, in a way, that Danny has never been able to  put two and two together about Amber's ex. Lack of curiousity, perhaps? I can well understand it if he doesn't really want too many details about her previous relationships but, still, he should have been able to realise that there was a chance that Ethan is gay from Amber's comments!

Oh my gosh, am I the only one who loves that Dinah, the (presumed) asexual in the group don't give a FUCK about the Ethan/Danny interaction, just that it interferes with her personal love affair with sausage (a very phallic topping) pizza?

The scene: a woman, walking between two weiners in search of sausage. The weiners are not especially interested in the woman. The woman is likewise uninterested. The woman eats pizza.
The end.

I am so happy right now

Countdown until Danny understands what bisexuality is: 998,332 days.

Only slightly related: Beat writer William Burroughs was among the thousands of participants studied by Kinsey when the Institute first started, and there are some really interesting passages in Naked Lunch about what that was like.

I'm taking today's strip as a sign that Dina really is asexual. She apparently observes Danny and Amber's trysts as a n academic exercise in biology and sociology.

Counterpoint:
Quote from: Hannelore
"Boy, that sure triggered a lot of MY dopamine receptors! Thanks for helping me trick my body into believing it fulfilled its genetic imperative!"
(from http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1109)

And Hanners has definitely expressed having had sexual attraction before, even if her phobias prevent her from acting on it.

So, Dina putting things into such clinical terms isn't proof that she's asexual, it could just be proof that she thinks of things in rather clinical terms. (I'm not saying that she's not asexual, but I'm not saying that she is either.)

More to the point the only way to tell if someone is aesexual is if they say 'I'm aesexual'.

Dina is, by her nature, mostly invisible to others around her. So long as she remains quiet and mostly still, she could have been standing right next to Danny and Amber doing the deed and there is no guarantee that they would have noticed her. :-P

It's not that hard to tell when a freshly involved teenage couple has boned (at least in fiction, at any rate). I seem to remember from the Slipshine they are not exactly silent, plus they would be walking around with that afterglow on their face.

Didn't know there it was spelled aesexual. Is it one of those weird "ae" hybrids?
Maybe in Britain it is.

I really love it when Joyce does her 'innocent maiden' thing. Is she horrified or secretly wishing that it was her? Personally, I think that the answer is 'both'.

Two things occur to me, now I've had a chance to think about today's strip (8/3/15):
  • I think that this conversation was Dina verbally hanging a sock on the dorm room door for Joyce's benefit - She's been advised to be somewhere else for a few hours;
  • I suspect that Dina is going to find out the truth about Becky's situation and may be the best ally that Becky and Joyce have ever had in this matter.
