Neko-Ali, as someone who grew up in a non-fundamentalist household that regularly attends a fairly hardcore fundamental southern Baptist church, I kinda resent you calling fundamentalism a cult.

That said, there's definitely cult-like elements in how certain people adopt the religion. My parents both have rigorous science backgrounds and taught me critical thinking from a young age, and I think that's a part of why we've never quite fit in perfectly at our church. It doesn't leave us marked as horrible, unworthy sinners, it just makes us strange and creates awkward gaps in conversations where we're silent as people wait for us to agree with them.

I absolutely agree with your analysis of why he talks the way he does; I've seen it in my own life. Hell, when I was little, I definitely sounded something like that concerning certain topics. People do it, but it's definitely a trait developed by individuals, not entire churches universally.

I do apologize for causing offense. To clarify I was speaking of those sorts of fundamentalist extremists of the sort that Ross seems to be a part. The ones who thing anything secular or scientific is evil and the work of the devil in a very real and literal sense. That think the earth is a few thousand years old, Pokemon and other cartoons are evil and tools of a regime that is out to get them, personally for being the only ones who really see the Real Truth. Those people are very much cult-like when they aren't a literal cult like the WBC. They rely on brainwashing techniques (even more than the average kid goes through just getting through school and less extremist churches). And leads to family situations like the Duggar household. Basically, really scary shit.

It takes a special sort of writer to turn a TV Tropes article name into a genuinely funny and plausible moment in their strip.

Nice job DMW!

Sadly, I'm sure Ross will return shortly, as soon as he learns he's been tricked. And probably none to happy about it. At least he's out of the way for a bit so Dina can go warn Becky.

Well, not too shortly, since it's a nonstop bus. But enough time for Becky to be warned.

As much as it is sweet that Becky finds the 'Dino-Girl' cute, I do hope that she can look beyond it, or the whole thing will basically crash-and-burn.

Well, Dina seems to be progressing in leaps and bounds these days! Is this the first time that she used a cuss word in such a way?

DMW did a lot of good work with her body language in this section of the arc so far. She's obviously looking for understanding from Becky but isn't entirely sure that she understands herself, right now.

Comic's up.

It makes me sad, but honestly, that's probably about right. No way Joyce could stand against butthole dad's bullshit-filled interrogation. I hope a third option is discovered that isn't living under a bridge, and I have a feeling Leslie Bean, teacher lady lesbian, will feature prominently in that. I hope so, anyway.

I'm not sure why it's so impossible that Joyce would stand up to Butthole Dad, considering she stood up to her own parents (about being friends with Dorothy) just a week or two earlier.

It's not impossible. It's just unlikely to the extreme. Joyce wasn't lying to her parents about Dorothy. She was just straining against their religious dogma. With Ross she would have to deal with that. She would have to lie to his face, something she is absolutely horrible at and do so convincingly enough to get him to leave. My money would be her blurting out something within seconds trying to like about Becky's where abouts that lead Ross directly to her. But then again, Ross seems to rate pretty high on the Oblivious Meter. Or at the least he was carrying the Idiot Ball when talking with Dina earlier.

Plus all of that, they have to keep him from talking to any of the many other people who know Becky has been hanging around all weekend, but don't know she ran away and would have no reason to even think of lying to Ross about her being there. Cue comedic, desperate charades behind Ross' back trying to convince people to Ixnay on the Eckybay.

I'm not sure why it's so impossible that Joyce would stand up to Butthole Dad, considering she stood up to her own parents (about being friends with Dorothy) just a week or two earlier.

Becky doesn't know about that.

Besides, in very many ways it is a different thing. Joyce never had to lie to her parents, only firmly declare that she is a moral agent in her own right and that she is capable of acting in tune with her own conscience and in line with her own faith without them leaning over her shoulder and critiquing every move.

Hmm... Maybe that might be the way for Joyce to handle it. Instead of answering Ross's questions, divert and dismiss by going on a counter-attack. Tell him that she has no time for his attempts to 'cure' something that is only wrong in his own mind and that she has no intention of interacting with him until he drops the idea and tells her that he honestly only wants peace with Becky.

It isn't likely that he ever would so it generates a reason for Joyce to refuse to answer his questions or even spend time in his company.

Firstly, sorry for the double-post although they have been separated by a large enough period of time.

I've been thinking a little bit more about Joyce's current dilemma in the strip. I’ve also been thinking again about some of the preview art that DMW has been showing on the Tumblr page.

(click to show/hide)

I would say that Walky and Sal could probably tell Joyce a lot about what horrors can hide behind a supposedly-loving parent’s smile. It will be a hard lesson for her to learn but the time has come to learn it and I think that Sal would be the best to help her do so.

Is the spoiler all related to the actual spoiler or is some of it related to her current dilemma? If he latter, could you split the two?

This whole series has been tugging at my heart, but this latest strip especially hit me in the feelings.

It feels like another lifetime, but really it wasn't that long ago that I was in a similar position as Becky, although fortunately I had friends I knew would stick up for me and it was months before I went to college, a rather liberally-oriented college with very nice financial aid people that were able to help me attend without family support. I was also fortunate that my aunt was more than willing to let me go once I had gone, rather than try to chase me down and 'fix' me.

But I know what it feels like to be rejected and threatened with punishment by your own family, and to feel like at any moment you might have nowhere left to go. And that led me into a dark place of self-harm and worse. Becky is fortunate to have Dina to give sympathy via heavy physical contact, and I hope Joyce makes the right decision and stands up for her friend. I probably wouldn't be alive today if not for my friends.

*Sigh* Becky is really screwed up, isn't she? Feeling obliged to act the cheerful airhead? Feeling constrained from expressing her sadness? Not really able to tell if Dina is showing affection for her?

This isn't something recent. This isn't just homophobic abuse. Ross has made a piss-poor job of raising an emotionally healthy daughter and both seems ignorant of this and determined to keep doubling down on his mistakes. Mark my words, Becky will have a breakdown eventually and, when it happens, it's going to be a big one.

Poor Becky. Yay for Dinah, who looks to stand as Becky's first  (entirely) emotionally healthy relationship! I'd include Joyce as a healthy relationship, but the 'unrequitted love of Becky's life' angle messed that up for her. I mean, nothing Joyce did wrong, but it definitely adds some kinks to an otherwise solid friendship. Enough to make it less than entirely healthy, just mostly so.

Another factor compounding things with Becky's relationship with Joyce isn't just the unrequited love angle, but the combination of that with Joyce being who Becky came to cling to for survival.

I don't think so. I come here with my own comments because I know and like here pretty well anyway.
