Squee so masculine it lives in a house it made by kicking a tree until it cooperated.

The only things in the fridge are whiskey and meat (not fish, it's basically a vegetable) and all the carpets are made out of bear.

Poor Becky! I do wonder if Dina knows what she's taken on here; that last panel really does seem to have Becky thinking: "So I get to have a nice thing?" I said it yesterday and I'll say it here: She's really swimming upstream against a whole tidal bore of issues, isn't she?

Dina is quite unexpectedly fierce when she wants to be, isn't she?

I have my own suppositions about this matter.  I just hope that if the ship sinks, it'll be pleasant enough that they can remain friends.  They have good chemistry so far.

FWIW, I suspect that it will be a learning process for both Becky and Dina. I strongly suspect that neither of them really has the first clue how to be in an adult, intimate relationship of any kind. They're going to make a ton of mistakes, misunderstandings and betrayals all without really meaning it.

That said, I'm confident that they'll come out of the other side more ready to face adult life as a result. This strip is basically all about growing up in a world that is nothing like the way you imagine it should be, after all!

Let us hope that Dina is able to assist Becky in an appropriate and helpful manner without matters descending into a chaotic situation

Bugger.  I either have to stop reading the early comics or stop reading this thread.  Every joke or theory I consider strays too close to verbotenland.

Now that it's safe to say, seems like Becky is showing Dina a few things about the world as well, such as giving Joyce a BSOD.

Bsod? No clue what that means. Is it the thing where she's hilariously horrified and her eyes pop out of her head? Wait. Never mind, I got it. Blue Screen o' Death. God it's been a while since someone mentioned that around me.

Just a reminder that Dina doesn't like Joyce and that the two of them cannot be considered to be in more than an armed truce. This could ultimately leave Becky caught between them and having to make difficult choices.

Or, for those of us who are being more optimistic, since they both care about Becky, even if she doesn't  directly *do* anything to help the process, end up making them to stand down from Cold War levels and end up having a more peaceful existence.  Either that, or she could fund her new place by selling tickets to a Joyce/Dina death match.

Whelp, the Joyce is broken. Someone find the reset switch....

I don't remember Dina saying she doesn't like Joyce, when did that happen? Dina hardly seems the sort to want to cause problems with people... The only one I've seen her say she doesn't like is Radiah.

Joyce is a young earth creationist.

Dina does not like young earth creationists, and outright exploded at Joyce when she tried to interrupt her educating Becky.

Oh, Joyce, don't you know, when you look at things all black and white, good and evil like you have forever, you're either a bad influence on people or you're lying to yourself. You can't match every rule, especially not when the people reading the rulebook have forgotten what the teacher listed flat out as rules one and two, 'love the lord your god and love your neighbor as yourself.' You got the first one, good for you, but Dinah's literally your neighbor. That you were raised with an unfounded belief in a young earth does not count as good enough reason to break rule #2.

Yep! Becky isn't over Joyce yet and certainly isn't about to forgive her for having a friend other than her for any reason just yet!

I want to be clear that I don't think that Becky is pursuing Dina out of any childish attempt to get back at Joyce. Dina isn't just a rebound either. No, Becky is in a bad place, emotionally, and she's desperately looking for solid ground. Dina, on the other hand, has encountered someone, possibly for the first time in many years, who has treated her as a person and valued her presence rather than treating her as a slightly alarming neurological anomaly.

My concern is that both Becky and Dina are going into this with different preconceptions, different goals and different ideas about where this could lead. They could end up hurting each other quite badly and that would be sad because neither of them deserve to have their hearts broken in this manner.

Most people would deliver Dina's dialogue in this strip (8/17) in a teasing way. The thing to remember about Dina is she would have delivered it with 100% serious earnestness. Even the last punchline would have been a helpful friend correcting a grammar error, not a wisecrack!

It shall be interesting to see where this latest Joyceventure takes us

I suspect that Joyce is going to have a crisis of confidence in herself as a friend and, possibly, as a Christian (and a 'good person', in her own definition of the phrase). I strongly suspect that she's going to end up talking with Sal, of all people, about this. Sal isn't exactly a nice person in terms of her people skills but I think that Joyce needs to have someone to tell her with a certain degree of brutal frankness that claiming to be good and even acting good isn't the same as being good.

Don't be silly, BenRg, she's making a joke. It's an established fact that Dina doesn't speak much with contractions, and seeing as 'you're,' and 'you are' are grammatically identical, the only way to read that is as a self-aware joke! Also, a joke is the only explanation for her glee-filled expression.

Also, I really want it to be a joke, because I love the idea that Dina's just a total dork

It was clearly a joke and a call back to earlier in the day when Sarah called her out on not using contractions to avoid answering her questions. Dina may have trouble understanding people's unspoken cues and body language. But she's not a humorless robot.

The whole thing is a bit of subtle psychological warfare. He'll come back to the campus, find his car is gone and go to security to report it missing. He'll likely spend the rest of the day trying to complete the necessary paperwork and pay the fine to have it returned from the pound. It's possible that Sarah hopes that the everything about being at Indiana State will be so unpleasant and inconvenient that he'll try some other means to locate Becky that doesn't involve him hanging around this ill-omened place.

[edit]
I'd really like to see Dina's "Evil List" and the reason for her rankings therein. I'm assuming that Joyce came in second after Sarah but a sample of only four is statistically useless. I'm betting Raidah is up towards the top of the comprehensive list along with Ross.

Someone on Tumblr makes reaction images out of DoA faces and they were challenged to make ones of Mike, even though he mostly looks angry. Someone responded by saying he has a normal range of expression if you remove the eyebrows.

I find it kind of unnerving.

So Mike is the human version of Grumpy Cat. He's not actually mean all the time, his eyebrows just make him look that way.

(I kid. Mike is a right bastard and proud of it)

Would be a kind of crisis of conscious for Amber if she does run into him. Technically speaking the ones wrong as far as rules are concerned here are Becky, Joyce, Sarah and Billie, for letting Becky crash there. It could go technically illegal if the college pushes Becky for trespassing. Ross hasn't done anything wrong or illegal other than having his car towed away. Which wasn't exactly his fault. On the other hand, Amber well knows what an abusive, controlling father is like and could easily go off on Ross once she hears the story. Either way, I'm bringing the popcorn because it's going to be interesting.

I feel sympathy for literally every character in today's comic, and it's confusing me. Totally get Sarah's POV, I've been in similar situations, and Joyce, I've definitely been a dick to people I care about in the heat of the moment. Dinah, I've tried to offer solutions to other peoples' problems, only to have them turn the offer down, and Becky, who hasn't felt helpless against what feels like an inevitable 'bad thing that will definitely happen eventually?'

I appreciate this, point to the thread title, and add a 'bravo,' because damn it, I actually kinda care about every fucking one of these fake people.

Sarah, how would you feel if you'd had the structure of your world-view completely undermined and found your sister-in-all-but-blood threatened by the one person she should be able to trust implicitly? Joyce never had the necessary cynicism and wisdom to confront an emotional crisis like this and she needs human contact right now. Drop your curmudgeonly attitude and just hold on to her until she finds her balance again!

[edit]
I've been thinking for a moment and, for some reason, today's strip leaves me hearing Sarah saying to Joyce: "Girl, we are getting you a boyfriend! You need to relax before you snap!" All protests will be waved aside because Sarah knows better (or at least believes she does). This opens up the chance for Willis to have a future chapter called "Joyce Brown's Blind Date" or something similar.

Another thought: Dorothy told Danny that Indiana State is basically a stepping stone to an Ivy League college of some sort. I wonder if Walky realises that a part of Dorothy is planning to run off to take her place in the Elite? It could lead to... issues if he tries to make a public show of commitment. Dorothy might not be ready for it or it might lead to a crisis between her feelings for Walky and her ambitions.

That sounds absurdly out of character for Sarah.
