That sounds absurdly out of character for Sarah.

I'm not sure that it is. A lot depends on what Sarah believes will help Joyce the most.

Sarah has said before to Jacob that she's basically surprised about how resilient Joyce is in the face of the slings and arrows of life but there is only so far sheer moral strength can take you. A person needs a support structure and, right now, Joyce has Ethan, Dorothy and Sarah... and that's pretty much it. She's trying to wean herself off of Ethan so turning to him would be counter-productive. There are certain viewpoint dissonances between Dorothy and Joyce that means Dottie isn't always as much help as she could be. Becky, of course, can't support anyone (she is actually worse off, emotionally, than Joyce is), it's pretty clear that Joyce feels constrained from turning to her parents and she really isn't close enough to anyone else despite her general niceness.

The time has come to integrate Joyce into some social circles before the load crushes her.

It's not that Sarah doesn't understand, it's just some people are just extremely uncomfortable with this kind of emotional display no matter how sympathetic they are to the person's pain.

Sarah has been against Joyce getting a boyfriend (at least a certain type of one) because it will bring drama to her which she wants to avoid because of the year before.

It's somehow typical of Sarah that she makes Joyce's subtlest strengths sound like character flaws!

That said, I really don't think Sarah enjoys being basically the weaker of the two personalities in the dorm room. She especially doesn't like it when the stronger personality has such a crusader-like driven nature.

Thread griping:
Ugh, I'm in a petty mood, so I'm going to come right out and say what I've been thinking: please, for the love of all that is good, spell characters' names correctly. Dina's name is literally in the title of this book. We heavily encourage people to spell Jeph's name correctly, as well as the names of QC characters. I feel like this should apply to this comic/thread too.

I read an interesting strip of Joyce and Walky!, the sequel of DMW's sci-fi epic It's Walky!, the other day. The now-married Joyce and Walky are lying on their bed and pondering the utterly surreal five to ten years of war, horror, struggle and casual violation of their minds that had led them to the point in their lives where now on the verge of 'happily ever after'. Joyce wondered if, if things had been different, would they have still ended up in the same place? Would have they been together and been happy? DMW then put an advert for Dumbing of Age at the bottom.

I'm thinking that this is exactly what this story sets out to do. Dumbing of Age starts at the same point, with the same room assignments and most of the same relationship arcs as his original strip, Roomies!

(click to show/hide)

The list of changes and consequences is enormous. I find it implausible that any of the Walkyverse relationships and end outcomes will be mirrored in DoA.

(click to show/hide)

In very many ways, it seems that Dumbing of Age is the strip DMW originally intended to write before the creative bug that led to the epic that is It's Walky! struck him.

How about you put some of these things in spoiler tags? That are some rather big revelations for people who haven't read It's Walky! or Joyce and Walky!

I wonder if there's any chance of Toedad realizing he's being...well, a toe... and accepting Becky.

I mean, we already have ONE completely irredeemable father in Blaine.

I dunno, if Joyce is partly autobiographical, maybe Toedad is based on a friend's father. Not to say that all of the characters are based on people DW knew/knows, but this seems a plausible thing to have happened in the past.

God, that's a depressing reality, but I'm not entirely convinced. I could easily picture certain men in my childhood congregation doing exactly the same thing. They very well might not, but it's easy to imagine, with an imperfect vision of these real-life characters. No person to person interaction gives a perfect image, so it's very easily from personal experience without being literally true

I wonder if Sal is going to try to reinvent herself after today's strip (8/21). After all, she's found our that her rebellious behaviour has become formulaic and predictable enough so that Billie can manipulate her with a high degree of confidence about the outcome! That isn't a particularly pleasant realisation!

I suspect that Sal is going to be in a fouler-than-usual mood the next day. When Joyce comes up to her and asks her to teach her to lie without a twinge of conscience and indicates that she sees Sal as a subject matter expert, it could easily turn into a major reassessment of her life! Either that or she'll just be really, really grumpy and want to beat up Malaya because she's as good a scapegoat as any.

Poor Sal!

I wish I could get the time to recharge. The trouble with living with people is you rarely get to be actually alone. But yeah, for someone introverted like Dina is, even just being around people can be exhausting. Having to interact with them, plus the stress of Toedad...

I think that the thing Amber really likes about her relationship with Danny isn't the sex, it's the comfort. To be held by someone who loves and accepts her. To be in contact with someone who doesn't want anything but to be with her. I think that's something new for her. It was what she was looking for with Ethan but Danny is the guy who has actually made it happen for her.

As for Becky and Dina, I suspect that they will be in this high-school sweethearts 'holding hands and kissing' stage for quite a while. Neither are emotionally ready to go any further. I think that, if they do go further, it will be a huge watershed for them both.

I imagine she was speaking without thinking because she was more interested in talking to Dina. This time she actually processed it. It would also be easier to dismiss something huge like a million years of dinosaurs but something comparatively small like a few thousand and something familiar could be easier to comprehend.

Now we find if Becky is able to handle being in a relationship with a strong, assertive personality.

I know that DMW wrote this to be cute and funny. However, I can't shake the fear that Dina, totally without meaning to, will end up harmfully dominating Becky just because Becky is used to submitting and suppressing her own desires to please strong personalities.

BenRG you will stop that this instant. Stop trying to imply Dina is entirely ignorant of others' pain. We have seen no evidence of this, and she has shown the capacity to recognize and avoid patterns that have, in the past, lead to others being hurt.Willis is trying to be cute and funny, and it's WORKING, dammit.

Put a sock in it BenRG, you're starting to piss people off - even a reasonably tolerant guy like me.

Well, given that I'm not even sure what I've said was wrong...

Benergy, you always see the potential downside to everything. I do think people are being a little harsh, but it is a buzzkill. This is Willis, he doesn't need your help to bum us out in the end. So let us have this happy arc while it's still happy.

That's not your call to make on this forum, with all due respect. Especially if others are uncomfortable.

Because you've taken tbe nervousness that anyone experiencing a first kiss feels and made the Herculean leap that based on that she's going to hurt Becky, despite how 100% out of character that would. An assumption that from an outside perspective it seems like you made because of Dina's lack of social development.

As a writer, it would upset me if people were just constantly making up horrible futures for my characters instead of letting my story develop how I want it to.
