So I was a few strips into Roomies and it was December in real life and apparently time actually moves. Weird.

Edit: Wait, he stopped writing for four months? Whaaaaaaaaa?

Edit: WHAT THE FUCK AM I READING. Now I know why people say "damn you, Willis" :(

I'm sorry, but I love this record of response. Good show, sir

I never thought that the day would come when I actually felt sorry for Mike. However, I think that I would be a bit annoyed too if two of my classmates had been getting into ever-louder, more aggravated and personal arguments about shipping and life-goals behind me as I was walking to class.

Sal, I've got some bad news for you: That's normal behaviour for Becky and I think she's infected Dina.

Edit: WHAT THE FUCK AM I READING. Now I know why people say "damn you, Willis" :(

In my defence, I did try to warn you as best as I could without spoilers!

[edit]
Okay, just an additional thought. For the previous two strips, I have been getting a real Hermione Granger vibe from Joyce. The way she's been arguing with Walky really puts me in mind how some fan-authors portray Hermione's interminable arguments with Ron Weasley.

When you think about it, Joyce's brown hair and uptight attitude only makes the comparison stronger! Emma Watson to play Joyce in DoA the Movie?

I'm thinking that, when Joyce finally gets the courage to face Dorothy, Dorothy won't know what she's supposed to be mad at Joyce about and Joyce will have a hysterical breakdown. This will lead to... other things in terms of Joyce character development.

Wait, Walky was drunk at the party too, why is Joyce only mad at Dorothy?

Joyce isn't mad at Dorothy; she's afraid that Dorothy is mad at her and is afraid to confront her about it. Walky revealed to Joyce that Dorothy knew Ethan was gay and that Joyce was helping him hide it. Joyce also has a huge guilt complex going about misinterpreting Ethan's desire to hide his homosexuality as a desire to have that 'fixed'. Although Joyce didn't actually do anything except pretend to be Ethan's girlfriend (in the hope that he would turn out to be her 'Mr Right' and that his love for her would lead to a fairytale ending).

Overall, she's terrified that, when she next sees Dorothy, her closest friend won't want anything to do with her anymore.

Not that I've seen. I think that it's just Joyce's guilty conscience over the whole Ethan fiasco playing with her head.

Sarah outright told Joyce that she'd lose Dorothy if she ever found out about Ethan being gay, though.

Sarah isn't exactly the best person to listen to when it comes to interpersonal relationships. She spends most of her time trying to push people away.

Dorothy knows he's gay. She doesn't know Joyce knows, though, and that's what Joyce is afraid she'll find out.

Joyce has given up the idea of trying to 'fix' Ethan being gay though. And it's not like she's been panicking all this time about Dorothy finding out. Which makes me think that her avoiding Dorothy has to do with the party.

The look on Joyce's face in the last panel makes me think she's going to take Mike's suggestion, and tell the truth to Tow Dad -- but in a confrontational way that makes it clear Becky isn't going with him.

So, does Mike just want to be part of the havoc or does he really want to help Joyce? Inquiring minds wonder and I will add that Joyce/Mike is a known favourite ship amongst Willis's long-term followers.

Be a little more understanding. Most of them started with Willis way back in 2000, when Roomies first started. When you have a thriving long-term community like his who already know the story of a comic on another URL, spoiler control is nearly impossible!

Basically, the statute of limitations on Walkyverse spoilers is over.

Also, Soylent Green is people, Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father, etc., etc.

Yeah, it's like not expecting anyone to mention a Breaking Bad or Sopranos spoiler. Once the show's been over for a while, it's fair game.

So, Walt kills Mike*, and I never watched the Sopranos so I can't give a spoiler on that, but I don't care if someone does.

* I accidentally typed this initially as Walky kills Mike, which would be an interesting ending for DoA...

I've seen Breaking Bad, but that post, cesium? That is a shitty thing to do. It's one thing to inadvertently spoil something, but especially in our age of Netflix where people can go back and watch a show? There's no excuse to spoil something for the sake of spoiling it.

Sure, there are a few exceptions where the spoiler is simply part of cultural knowledge (bhtooefr mentioned a couple), but otherwise? Keep it the fuck to yourself unless someone asks (or if you're in an appropriate setting for it, obviously).

You could make an argument that this an appropriate setting, but we have spoiler tags, there's no reason not to use them if talking about a non-DoA comic.

Hoh  Shit.

I guess I can take the last two seasons of Breaking Bad off my Netflix queue.

Dude. We're in a different world now. People like me, who don't have cable wait for Netflix to have stuff and then it can take ages to get through it all, because there's other stuff.

Honestly though, that show's been impossible to avoid spoilers. My main trick is to assume people aren't serious, and I'm  gonna just have a few drinks and hopefully forget/watch the first season of Glee until my brain melts. It might work.

Cesium, that was shitty. Not everyone has the time, chance or the desire to see things when they're brand new and coming out week to week and it's shitty to spoil things just because you can do it. Even if you're not bothered, it doesn't mean someone else won't be upset by it.

Even if you consider it 'fair game,' that don't mean it won't affect anyone. There's a statute of limitations, yes, but for things that have come out in the last decade, that's a MUCH longer time. If it's quality product, just leave it unspoiled, dangit

No hard feelings, though, Cesium, just recommending for not being called shifty in the future.
Turns out Glee is very effective at wiping my mind.

If knowledge of one event ruins two seasons of a TV show, then it's not a good TV show.

Breaking Bad was a good TV show. Watch the last two seasons and you'll enjoy them. (Or is that a spoiler too?)

I'm beginning to wonder if the whole dinosaur fixation is just a defensive behavior that Dina uses to keep those confusing, incomprehensible and, occasionally, even frightening and painful humans at arms' length. Becky is the first person likely for a long time that Dina has let past that wall.

Well, she has stated before that she prefers Dinosaurs over Humans because they are extinct and thus fixed in time and not constantly changing.

Huh. There is something deeply disturbing about how Joyce and Becky had allowed aspirations and life goals. Their home communities are sounding less and less like a religious group and is beginning to sound more and more like a self-perpetuating sort-of-isolationist subculture that has set social roles for all its members irrespective of their own wishes.

If I'm right about this, then Joyce has probably been programmed to want to find a husband and spend the rest of her life as a home-maker and educator of her children (of whom  there will probably be many). I can't help but shiver a little at the thought.

Oh, there is no doubt that Joyce and Becky were programmed to be good little wives and mothers. Joyce is the one who took to the programming whole heartedly. If she had been the one to be sent to the christian college instead of Becky, she probably wouldn't even have questioned things. Or maybe she would have.. I mean it's still life away from her parent's control for the first time. Until recently she never even questioned her place in life or what she was taught. She still clings to a lot of those things, sometimes unconsciously. Despite coming to realize they are wrong about some things, like homosexuality.

But yes, it's pretty clear that Joyce and Becky's parents are in an almost cult-like extreme religious group that among other things sees women in only 'traditional' roles. Wife. Mother. Caretaker. Wanting to be something other than that has sent Toe Dad here to save Becky from herself... Probably by dragging her back to his house and locking her up until he can marry her off. It also bears mentioning that Joyce is taking education at college, until she gets married. The exact same path that Becky just describe. Except that's what she wants to do. For now anyway, who knows what the future holds.

Up until now that's been true. Now she is learning there is a lot more to life than what she has been taught. Maybe that will change as she learns more. And maybe it won't. She may not be as straight as she thinks she is either. Her only boyfriend was a guy she knew was gay from the start. She's expressed both a strange fascination with women's bodies and lesbians as well as freaking out about the idea of lesbians or the thought she might 'turn into one' before Becky came out to her.  She is canonically straight I think in all the other Walkyverse settings. I'm just not sure how much I believe Willis' claim that the sexuality of characters wouldn't change in DoA. He's also said 'Everybody becomes lesbians. Everybody." before.

In the end, Joyce has very much lived her life fulfilling the path her parents set out for her. She's now just learning that there are other options, and that they are as valid as the 'one true way' she was taught. But she is very slow to let go of things the way she knows them. Only time and Willis will tell.

Well, at least Becky has realistic expectations, considering how she was raised before she broke out, as to what she is most likely to be able to do as a job at this stage of things.

Let's hope Dina and the others are able to help her move on further than that though.

Once again I ask what happens when Amber's boyfriend leaves her for her ex-boyfriend?

Why would that happen? It's kind of shitty to assume just because he's bi he'd leave Amber.

Edit: Whoa, I thought yesterday's comic was today, when I actually hadn't checked today...never mind!

Yeah, Danny is thinking that he can do something stupid. I don't know if he's just dumb when it comes to relationships or if he's falling into the mental trap (that a lot of people who betray commitments do) that they can somehow have parallel relationships for different parts of their sexual or emotional needs without the two affecting each other (this is the most common cause of bigamy, IMO)

Just consider this, Danny - You know how important Amber is to Ethan. Do you think that he would be interested in two-timing her with you? Do you  think he would hurt her in exchange for a boyfriend? No. You'd just end up losing them both and probably hurting Amber badly (someone who has already had too much pain in her life).

More generously, it is possible that Danny is going a different way and has decided to handle his crush on Ethan by taking him off the market and getting him a BF... any BF as soon as possible.

Either way, Danny is going to strain or even destroy his friendships by thinking that he can sweep this whole thing under the rug without Amber ever knowing about it.

I am seeing this in I think a different light than other people, I think. What I am getting from people here is Danny is trying to hook up with Ethan on the side. I see it more like Danny realizes that he's attracted to Ethan, but he's dating Amber and doesn't want to betray or give up that. So long as Ethan is single it's a temptation... So he wants to get Ethan a boyfriend, to remove that temptation, he thinks. Notice he said 'Amber and I should find you a boyfriend'. You don't generally include your girlfriend in the process if you plan to be sneaking around behind her back.
