Is it just me, or has the dialogue seemed fairly... stilted and unrealistic lately?

And I also saw it as Danny trying to get Ethan a boyfriend to remove temptation for himself.

I interpreted the comic the same way as Neko and Loli. Didn't see it all as Danny trying to set himself up with Ethan.

I'm not sure if Danny's in denial or is just trying to muddy the waters.

Joe has a point.

I...

I'm sorry, did I follow a link to Shortpacked! by mistake? If I didn't know that it was Dumbing of Age, it would have been indistinguishable from dozens of similar interactions between them in the older strip.

The same occurred to me. DoA has made small references to Amber and Ethan being into toy collecting, but not recently at all.

It was a big thing for Amber, I think, when she first appeared, though her obsession was more with that TV show based on It's Walky that I can't remember, with a monkey. Monkey Master? I dunno. I never made it through that chunk of the Walky-verse.

Ethan, though, I can't remember any specific Dumbing of Age references to him collecting toys. I mean, I maybe do, but I might be confusing DoA with Shortpacked!?

In other news, it's weird ending a question with a title that requires an exclamation point. A simple question became an interrobang, and for once, I didn't intend to do it to show outrage and disbelief.

In the flashback to the shop, Ethan gets a very anxious Amber talking enthusiastically by bringing up Transformer toys.

Prediction for the next few strips:
ToeDad returns and finds Ethan, in a horrible mood, still on guard duty. All attempts to communicate with Ethan fail as he gets more and more aggravated about Amber’s new toy and the fact that he can’t easily get his ‘fix’ from the local Target. Eventually, Ethan is holding ToeDad by the front of his shirt, shaking him and screaming something about: “Why does she get Sky Lynx and I don’t, huh? HUH? Why?!? TELL ME WHY!

ToeDad, fearing for his life from the obviously-insane young man, runs back out onto the street and gets run over by a passing garbage truck. Hence the interlude at the Emergency Room.

Given her whole "underaged drinking is illegal YOU KNOW WHO I AM DANNY" thing from the last storyline I agree with Ethan as far as not trusting her with details about Becky. The stakes are too high to give that information to someone who's ideas of right and wrong are so rigid.

It would be pretty rigid alright if she would report people for letting a homeless girl on the run from an abusive household crash in their dorm rooms. Given her history Amber might even identify with Becky. That of course could open up a whole new set of problems... Of the Amazi-Girl vs Toe Dad fight scene type.

I dunno... Maybe Willis is setting up a situation where Amber has to confront the occasional dichotomy between 'legally wrong' and 'morally wrong'.

We already know there's some serious cognitive dissonance going on with her so-called moral code. Beating the shit out of people is also illegal and a far more serious crime than underage drinking, but she has no qualms about meting out copious amounts of violence over misdemeanor offenses. It would be interesting to see her be forced to confront and address her own hypocrisy.

Any case, I realized while looking at the DoA homepage that Willis is either better at silly, crass insulting links than our benefactor, mr. Jeph Jacques, or more willing to resort to ridiculous combo-curses. The QC link to DoA is that Dave Willis sniffs butts, while DoA straight up calls Jeph Jacques a taintbraider.

As in, Willis accuses Jeph of braiding taints. I don't even know that this is an insult, it shows some strange sort of power that mortal and women only dream. Possibly have nightmares about.

I'm really worried about Sarah. Her anger, resentment and desire to beat Raidah could lead her to a very, very dark and dangerous place.

*frowns* are you sure? I was under the impression she only dealt out violence in self-defence, or against Sal (and her gang) or her father.

That's almost exactly right: The only time that we've seen Amazi-Girl use violence, she's been either defending herself or defending others from violence. She actually refused to initiate a fight against a group of vandals.

I've found that some people look for a cause to condemn Amazi-Girl because they find her strict 'obey the Law' ethos offensive or subconsciously threatening, especially when it comes to alcohol.

Ethan just gave an example where her extreme legalism could potentially be a threat.

[/quote]

I can't speak for others, but I have no problems with her propensity toward violence. I have one myself. I do take issue with hypocrisy in general, though. The thing is her 'follow the law ethos' isn't strict and only applies to other people. It is an excuse to funnel her rage into a mental space she can justify to herself. Like all moral crusaders she is good at the mental gymnastics required to justify behavior in herself she condemns in others.

As far as your conclusion about why certain people condemn her, do you real "find" this or do you simply draw that conclusion based on your own unsupported assumptions?

Wow! Sarah is so pretty when she comes out of her 'everyone hates me and I don't care' shell! Such a pity that, as Jacob has noticed, there is a definite feel of Fatal Attraction-level crazy bouncing around in her head!

As far as your conclusion about why certain people condemn her, do you real "find" this or do you simply draw that conclusion based on your own unsupported assumptions?

Empirical evidence. No-one cared about Amazi-Girl's behaviour and, indeed idolised her for it (several were upset that she didn't murder her father). Then she took a stand against breaking Indianna's (admittedly strict) underage drinking laws and she was a vicious, violent and dangerous hypocrite to the point where they exaggerated and even made up stuff about her violent behaviour. The conclusion pointed to itself.

[edit]
Just thought I should emphasise that I'm talking about the Dumbing of Age comments thread on its own site, not here where the debate has been less... fraught.

Technically this is not empirical evidence. It is anecdotal.

Today's strip gives me the feeling that Sarah has decided that she's better than this. She's right; she is better than this. Having Jacob think that she's had a nervous breakdown is a small price to pay for saving her own soul.

Has he never seen her smile or something? (pause) Has anyone ever seen her smile?

I think no. Not even a malicious smile, that I recall

He has seen her smile in a reflective way when they were discussing Joyce but this one was something else.

She tried to feign being cheerful because she thinks that is what Jacob wants, but realized she can't do it. She can't pretend to be someone she's not in order to win over a boy. Rightfully so. But at the same time she's sad cos she thinks she blew her chances.

I've got a feeling that this whole thing about Becky trying to stabilise her life is going to turn into a comedic learning experience for her and Dana both about the nature of real world adult life.

Meanwhile, because they're wandering around Bloomington, Becky and Dina are nicely out of Ross's field of view. He'll return to the campus, find that no-one has seen Becky recently and that she'd been telling everyone that she was only staying for the weekend.

And I love Beckys optimism here.

I really think that Sal should give Joyce the requested ride. One way or the other, it will shut her up. Either she'll be so scared that she'll never ask again or she'll like it so much, she'll save up to buy her own bike!

I can't hear "chopper" referring to a motorcycle without thinking of Zed.

Meanwhile, Walky has decided to address his own problems by buying a ticket for a cruise down Deriver Denial to Reality Falls. I just hope it isn't one-way!

I wonder why Walky and Sal are in the same class. You'd think Walky would've taken AP classes in high school.
