I wonder why Walky and Sal are in the same class. You'd think Walky would've taken AP classes in high school.

I have a feeling that part if why Walky was so successful in highschool is that he never did more than he had to. Being in NHS doesn't mean you're in advanced classes, just that your GPA is high. You can do that by just taking easy classes.

I'm pretty sure that Walky is going to melt down at this point. He's clearly decided that he can hide his problems from everyone who matters (most notably his parents). However, eventually he's going to have to pass tests to advance in his classes and that isn't easy.

Meanwhile, I've got the feeling that Mike is on a "Cruel to be kind because it's fun" path. Basically, get Walky to accept help by making his life unbearable.

P.S.: Spending all his time drawing space aliens, huh? Is Walky another part of Willis's autobiographical characterisation of himself in this strip?

Yeah, I'm (almost) alone in the echoey lobby of my community college and I audibly chuckled, catching the attention of the one other person in the room. She gave me a weird look, but I can't explain why Mike knowing things is bad news for Walky

Maybe my school was different but honors classes were worth more to your GPA than standard, and high honors/AP were worth even more.

Because Mike also knows Walky wants to keep that a secret. Which means Mike has a way to torment Walky, whenever he so chooses. And since it's Mike, he will use that. It's pointless to even ask him to keep it quiet, that will just make him want to torment Walky even more.

See. and I know that, but I'm familiar with the strip. This girl was on the far end of the room, and I don't know, but I'd be surprised if she knew DoA. I just went back to smiling at my phone and after a second or two, she went back to whatever she was doing, probably waiting on the business office to open, from where she sat

Nah, not really. I mean on someone else those statements could sound decent enough. But when dealing with Mike, you should always add a silent 'You idiot' to the end of each of his sentences. Plus, he knows the value of stringing someone along a bit before dropping the hammer. People are often very good at abusing themselves and freaking themselves at. Sometimes it just takes a little nudge to start them/keep them going and Mike gets to soak in that sweet, sweet anguish.

You know, I really think that we're up for a big paradigm shift in the relationships surrounding Sal in the very near future. I suspect that she's going to decide that actually talking to Joyce is the only way she's going to get to have her leave her alone. The thing is... I don't think that conversation will turn out the way either of them hoped!

Actually, to save time, I'll just quote my comment on the subject from dumbingofage.com:
Quote

I do think that the time has come for Sal to actually talk to Joyce about how she’s always pestering her and her feelings about it. Joyce isn’t stupid and she isn’t socially unaware and would actually ease off if Sal asked her to do so. The problem is that Sal isn’t comfortable with interacting with people outside of her tiny circle and typically tries a strategy of avoidance and antisocial behaviour to try to drive them away. Unfortunately, Joyce simply doesn’t get it; she needs to be told.

The thing is? I have a sneaking suspicion that, if they get to actually talking, Joyce and Sal may have a lot of surprises in store for each other. Neither of them will get what they want from the conversation but they may get things that they need.

Possibility: Joyce will be hanging out with Sal in town, learning more of her real like (as opposed to the cool illusion), so ToeDad can’t find her in campus when she returns.

It's going to be quite a struggle for Sal during this encounter. Will her need to present an antisocial armour to the world override her simple humanity and sympathy for Joyce?

This strip, coming on the heels of the last one, really drives home the difference between the two verses.  In both, she's "one with triangle grin" - but in this one, she's also a rape victim.

The chapter title makes sense to me now, though not in the Wicked lyrics fashion. Sal's needs to be brought back to Earth, she's got this elevated sense of self, like she's just better than other people, Joyce, for example. She's had a different life than everyone but possibly Marcie, but that doesn't mean she has to hold herself away from everybody else the way she is. She's gotta be grounded...

Knowing Willis, most probably one leading to the other. The question remaining to be answered is: Which leading to which?

I've been thinking about panel 1. In many ways, both women in today's strip were afraid of something. Sal was afraid of opening up and being vulnerable to someone emotionally, so she was planning to run away from Joyce (in a self-confident, swaggering way but still effectively running away). Joyce, on the other hand, has been so messed up by her traumatic fear that she's having a full-blown flashback.

I think that Sal is about to face one of her life's greatest challenges: How does she help Joyce and what is her own personal pride and defensiveness worth?

Something tells me that the gruff, aloof exterior is such a part of Sal's self-identity that she's even learned how to be caring without breaking character. At 18-19 years old, that's quite the achievement!

Sal is learning an important thing today: Other people have problems and difficult lives too! Most importantly, you miss a lot of fun and/or important stuff if you are just trying to stay aloof because you are afraid of being emotionally vulnerable to people.

If Sal achieves anything, it will be to persuade Joyce that her fear/indecision loop regarding Dorothy is senseless and that she's just got to learn to take emotional risks if she wants a friendship to work. That is, of course, ironic as Sal herself almost never lets herself take any kind of emotional risk.

I think Joyce might be exaggerating her feelings to try to curry favor with Sal, but during just about every other interaction between Joyce and Walky he, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not, says something that scandalizes or angers her.

I think this is right. She doesn't really like Walky, he's a bit of a jerk towards her, but she's never been actively anti-Walky. Even now, she's just talking.

Okay, opinion time, DoA fans: Why do you think that Joyce was bothered by Dorothy's behaviour? I think that, on some level, it's because Dorothy found the party so boring that she needed to drink to enjoy it. That would borther me too!

Yeah, I'm going with ChaoSera's thoughts on this. I think it especially bothered her not because Dorothy was drinking so much as that she got drunk at the party that was being thrown specifically for Joyce to get comfortable with the idea of parties again. Instead having people drunk in her room reminds her of that other night. It's something that's been on her mind a lot since the day she had her epiphany that she's been part of problem when it comes to the amount of shit LGBT people go through, and that they don't need fixing. All the fear she's been feeling since the night of her near-rape, and the guilt about how she's treated Becky and Ethan and who knows how many others is coming to a head. Sal is right.. she needs to talk to someone soon or she's going to wind up exploding. She already had kind of a mini boom already trying to get Becky to yell at her to assuage her guilt over her anti-gay statements previously. Which is sad because Joyce is genuinely a nice girl. She's just had her head filled with a lot of bad programming and is having a hard time having to de-program and learning a lot of what she was taught and thought to be true is pretty horrible, actually.

Just another indicator of the amount of effort (some of it against at least the spirit of the law) that Ross went to in order to keep Becky under control. It's chilling, in a way, just how dependent that he seems to need her to be.

Ouch. That is going to be a problem. I doubt she has a copy of her birth certificate or a state-issued ID then if she doesn't even know a social security card exists. That could make getting a new one issued difficult.
