Poor Sal! I really feel bad that she needs to present the illusion that she's tough and independent to the point where she is socially isolated. Marcie having a girlfriend and her own life is going to be tough on her, I think. In fact, I've got the feeling that she is going to be standing around until her next class, practising being lonely and wishing that she's just decided to sit with Joyce and listen to her ramble.

So... I'm thinking that Dorothy's screen name is possibly how Walky describes her (it seems to be a 'thing' between them). I'm pretty sure Joyce already knows that and I'm wondering what she thinks about it.

I wish that I had the strength to not read for the next week or so.  Things are taking a dark turn here, and it'd be nice to at least read towards some sort of resolution building.

It should be interesting to see how things play out. Ross has chosen probably the least favourable environment for him to carry out this confrontation. If Becky refuses to co-operate, he's going to have to carry out a kidnapping in the middle of a street, in broad daylight and after attracting the cops' attention with that swerve. Additionally, it depends on how close we are to the college but there could be a lot of people hanging around who aren't going to just stand by and let things happen.

Possible outcome of the current arc (anticlimactic but not unrealistic, IMO):

We cut away for a few strips so we can follow Joyce’s traumatic reconciliation (in her mind) with Dorothy. It will be cute and bitter-sweet. Cute because Dorothy doesn’t know that there is anything wrong and bitter-sweet because it will demonstrate just how deeply Joyce’s friendship for her runs and how heartbroken she was at the thought of there being enmity between them.

After that, we cut back to Becky and her dad sitting on a bench. He’s trying to persuade her to try the ‘intensive cure’ class he’s found (“Look! They even have colour brochures!”). She keeps on refusing. He gets angry but also sad. There is a bit of semi-religious rhetoric and maybe threats to cut her off with nothing. He tells her that, if she refuses, then she’s an orphan and he’s childless. She agrees to those terms. There is a long, dead pause (one silent panel before)…

“Well, okay. Goodbye, stranger. I doubt we’ll meet again.”

“Bye.” A beat then. “I’ll need my Social Security number.”

“I’ll post the stuff to Joyce Brown. I have no doubt she’ll know where to find you.” Then Ross gets in his car and drives off as Becky breaks down on Dina’s shoulder.

Yeah, given what little we've seen of his personality so far I'm kind of thinking Ross isn't going to just back off and give up after a civil conversation.  Or what we know of Becky either, for that matter. I forsee a lot of yelling and people getting involved. I don't know if any kind of campus police will show up though. So far I don't think they've made an on screen appearance. We've just heard of some of the things they've done like towing Ross's car.

Still we knew this was going to happen eventually. Becky does kind of stand out with that hair, and just walking around town and campus when her dad was looking for her meant he was either going to wind up spotting her, or find someone who recognized her but didn't knot he situation to direct him. And really, it's something that needs to happen. Even if Joyce successfully lied to Toedad and convinced him that Becky had already left for... somewhere, that would only be delaying the inevitable.

I'll be honest, the only way I was able to get away from my abusive father was to cut all my ties with the life he knew of and move to a state I'd never been before. And to be honest, I made it quite clear in my parting letter that I wanted nothing more to do with him, ever. That I was done trying to make our relationship work. He still could have tracked me down if he really wanted, even given that. He did manage to get a letter to me through the one cousin I stayed in contact with for a while. But since I didn't change my name right away there was a paper trail he could have followed if he wanted.

Ooh!  And parade the SD around as a trophy.  Like "look at what I gored".  Might make Dina feel better about the whole thing that happened with Amber's SD.

Okay, even in my worst scenarios, I hadn't expected him to start raving about Becky and Dina being punished "by God's hand" and then pull out a gun. Willis may say no death, but I can't see this ending without blood.

It may be interesting to see how the Browns react to this. Joyce may be surprised just how sympathetic they are to Ross's plight.

I have my suspicions about where this is going and how it's going to be presented. In terms of dramatic tension, it is a brilliant idea and will leave the audience glued to the page waiting for updates. In terms of emotional abuse of the audience, it will border on bloodsport.

Things seem to be heading towards a climactic and very public confrontation in the college quad. This reduces the likelihood of bloodshed but I do think that it is going to be stressful and traumatic. It also means that Becky's secret is firmly out.

A lot of people are wondering why she didn't call the police, but based on today's strip she a. doesn't know about the gun, and b. if you're a teenage runaway - even from an abusive situation - more often than not the cops will not be your friends.

To account '@PingAmaziGrrl' - "I'm by the fountain! Come help quick!" Then she screams for Sal. Sal and Amber are about to be forced to confront their respective demons to protect the innocent (something they both believe in). In her own way, so will Joyce.

A nearby bystander tells the newspapers about two girls being saved by what he describes as "Three Angels of Justice".  :wink:

Guy screeches to a halt, gets out and starts yelling at a couple of college students. They bolt into the woods and he pulls out a rifle and chases after them. I sure as heck hope someone calls the police... I don't see how Ross figures this is going to end well for him. Oh wait, yes I do. He 'has God on his side'.  :psyduck:

Also, regardless of how it turns out, the police and campus authorities will be alerted to Becky's presence. Meaning no more living in Billie's room amongst other potential issues.

Oh. How silly. I sort of hoped... Well, it doesn't matter. I'll keep reading the strip but this is a step into Walkyverse-style (although not Walkyverse-level) surreality that sort of undermines the whole strip.

No. It was extreme in places (for example, I doubt that many people in Amber's position would really turn themselves into costumed vigilantes) but it was still generally believable as something that is meant to reflect the real world. This strip is just too silly.

How is it sillier than Amazigirl?

Maybe it's all in the eye of the beholder. To me, Amazi-Girl was at least plausible if highly unlikely. Ultimately, you can explain it by reference to her mental health issues.

However, today's strip just seems to be Willis releasing his inner Jurassic Park fanboy and it doesn't seem like anything the character would actually do. Dina might pretend to think she's a dinosaur to avoid awkward conversations but she doesn't really think she's a dinosaur! To me, he's just broken the character of Dina and wrecked the drama of the scene.

FWIW, I can see this ending in one of the following ways:
  • Ross starts beating Dina black and blue; Joyce, Sal and possibly Amazi-Girl arrive to witness this and dog-pile him; the campus cops arrive to find three students (including one who seems to still be in her comic-con costume) trying to physically restrain the 'shooter'; they all end up getting commendations (and a dressing down from the Chief of Security for putting themselves in danger);
  • Ross nearly kills Dina and wanders off to be ultimately found by the campus cops, who are responding to the passerbys' 9-1-1 about an active shooter on campus;
  • Becky doubles back and sees Ross beating on Dina. Being a good all-American girl, whose daddy taught her to shoot to protect her family from the Gubb'mint's black-uniformed stormtroopers, she picks up Ross's fallen rifle and blows two 223-calibre holes through his centre of volume; the next phase of Becky's character arc will be her dealing with the guilt of having shot and likely killed her own father, even if it was in defence of her girlfriend.

See, BenRG, you take it as ridiculous that Ross would have seen Jurassic Park, I take it as evidence he at least saw it himself before declaring it ungodly. Whether he's making the reference intentionally, that's actually up for some debate, because it's not necessarily just a reference; it's a full, logical statement, considering Dina has just outwitted him. It's probably a reference, but it might not be one he's making consciously.

Either way, it's happened, it's canonical, and it's pretty obviously a matter of pacing out the strip and giving Becky the chance of getting to the fountain. I agree with your point about Dina; I don't see her coming out of this unscathed, though I don't know if her injuries will be nearly fatal.

Any case, it appears the gun is out of his grasp, which is a good sign.

Religious people don't need to see/read things before declaring them ungodly.  You hear them talking about Harry Potter teaching witchcraft is good and that's ungodly, and you know they haven't read Harry Potter.   You hear them criticize Dogma for things that weren't in the film, and you know they haven't seen Dogma.  You hear them talking about satanic rock music, and you know they haven't listened to the music.

Dude, I've grown up in this environment. My parents, thank whatever heavenly body floats your boat, were fringe members who didn't buy into censorship, but I've been around the people who do agree with it for most of my life. They were my elementary school teachers, some of them even taught high school.

Some of them DO actually give something a once-over before agreeing with whoever said it was no good. They're less likely to do this if it was the pastor who was talking shit about it.

Probably a good thing. It means Ross will probably go running after Becky instead of doing whatever he was going to do to Dina.

No, Becky's' high-vis hair color may have saved Dina. And she's in a well-populated area.
