Ruth is feeling the apathy brought on by severe depression, Billie is trying to pull her out of it, Ruth is not responding well.

Not gonna lie, today's comic made me chuckle in a sad fashion. No true mirth was felt, just a sad sort of humor.

I foresee a major crisis coming, not only in Ruth's tenure as RA but also in her relationship with Billie. Whilst Billie is still interested in her and wants to help her, she seems to be running out of patience with her.

I hope this isn't mean, but do you ever not? I get that it's Willis, but how do you enjoy a comic if you always assume things will go bad?

I think that you hit the nail on the head when you say 'This is Willis'. His writing tends to be dark and negative with even his positive moments often overshadowed with troubling questions about what is over the horizon. I enjoy it because the characterisations and how he writes believable people going through crises is compelling and interesting. I don't need rainbows and unicorns to enjoy a tale.

Billie is very good at thinking on her feet and using opportunities when they arise. I'm not sure Ruth was ready for that or can adapt to that.

Ouch, with Billie's past, that's fucking ROUGH.

Their story makes me sad, but I do enjoy it, just in a different way. There must be some character development, if only because one or both of them will die unless they change soon.

As someone who survived a mutually self destructive death spiral relationship, I can identify pretty hard with these two. I, at least, avoided the delusion that it was love. And I managed to escape relatively intact. She did not.

I hope these two find help.

Are RAs typically prevented from being in a relationship with their residents? One of my friends met her boyfriend and started dating him while she was his RA. I mean obviously if it was found out Ruth was letting Billie get away with drinking in the dorms she would be fired, and if her own drinking problems were discovered it could get even worse. But does the relationship actually need to be so hush-hush?

That would depend on the college in question, I think. RAs are officially in a position of power over their residents. Being in a relationship with them calls into question impartiality and possible abuses of power. It's probably very likely that a lot of the 'secrecy' stems from Ruth not wanting to admit she's anything other than a hard ass who should never be crossed. Her relationship with Billie is a chink in that armor. The fact that the relationship seems to be largely based on hate sex and both of them getting drunk off their asses but not killing themselves with it... Well let's say Ruth would at least be talking with the school if they knew she and Billie were drinking in the dorms. Almost certainly she would lose her position if they knew how bad it was and how it affected her work.

That said, I don't see how people in the rooms around Ruth's can possibly be in the dark that Billie is living there. Dorms tend to be active all hours of the day. They could get away with scenes like that once in a while, but every time Billie enters or leaves Ruth's room? On a daily basis? It's stretching credibility to much to think her floor mates don't know Ruth has Billie there. They're probably to scared to say anything though.

Edit for today's comic:

As much as I enjoy Becky's "it's *my* head canon" moment, Dina steals the whole thing.  And I'm rather glad that Willis fixed the typo before this went live.

Not yet, most likely. It's only been a few days. Before she will be able to do anything to get student loans or apply for the college, she's going to need a residence. I don't think putting down "Crashing in one of your dorm rooms without you knowing about it" will look very good on the application.

At first, I was all excited for Becky, because this is excellent for her. Then I was all sad, because Joyce, and Walky calling it her new default, and it being a constant for Joyce now. This is an upsetting thing to me...

I'm sure that Becky's façade will crack soon enough.  It's also an interesting contrast to what is going on with Joyce, who hasn't had the whole fundamentalism thing crumbling around her for *years*, and that time to process things.  It has been a couple of months for Joyce that is tearing down her entire world view, so she seems to be becoming more bitter and angry.  Since some of Joyce is autobiographical for Willis, this may in some ways echo how he became an atheist.  For Becky, despite what she has been through, god is still answering lesbian prayers, and accepting things like evolution, and budding feminism wouldn't be out of place in more liberal churches.

I hate this argument. It's barely even supported by scripture. One verse in Romans, talking about sin and connecting it to death, and suddenly no one got sick prior to eating the fruit? Blind faith in anything is a bad idea, but it's worse when the faith is in human beings, which clearly is what Joyce was putting it in, if she never questioned the doctrine. I just... I see myself in this strip. In most of the strips about Joyce confronting the issues with her past, really. My parents might not be fundamentalists, but they definitely raised me surrounded by them on all sides.

This is approximately the same thing I came here to comment. If great minds think alike, then so do slightly-above-average-but-overall-typical minds, and congratulations on having one of those.

Oddly enough, I do think that "willful and hypocritical self-deceit" is Mike's #1 peeve.

I also think that he is just a tiny bit protective of Joyce but that may just be me.

It's probably something to do with their neighbour having a psychotic episode and waving a gun in her face followed by the voicemail rant later that day. They've probably decided that she needs respite in what they honestly view as a safe space.

I thought she was going home for Thanksgiving weekend, but I'm not sure of the timeline.

A bit on the nose there Becky, but I think she's using that kind of 'Gallows Humour' as a sort of self depreciation after what happened to her, and I like the way Dina has sortof called her on it.  Even if Dina is unaware of that fact.

Amber, that makes no sense. Windows are a viewpoint through which snaps can be taken, thereby meaning snapchat stories could include your little display, billions of snapchat stories, if I were to take Danny at his literal word, and to assume every window has a person with a phone and the snapchat app.

Panel 1 reminds us that Amber isn't just a girl in a cosplay outfit pretending to be a masked vigilante. She's got the moves too!

I love Snapchat.

I wonder how bad Amber's vision is for her. She might be wearing contacts.

Maybe the glasses are fake and part of her cover. (Of course if anyone asks, she's wearing contacts)
