It's gonna be interesting to see what goes on between Becky and Dina.  I'm wondering if either of them is really ready to 'Take it further' and/or if they really know how to, if you get my meaning.

I don't blame her for feeling snarky. This is exactly the kind of drama she tries to avoid. Joyce drags her out to a social situation and she immediately ends up in this mess.

That looks less like snark and more like pure joy at Billie's misery. Then again, even if it is sarcastic, have we ever seen her smile?

I'd say you're seeing what you want to see. Sarah may not like people much, but she's never taken joy in their suffering.

Because you stated she annoyed you in the past. Presuming that you don't like her, you are taking the worst interpretation of her expression and sentence. I see her just snarking since she didn't want to come along in the first place because she doesn't like people or drama. And the first thing she runs into is people drama. Sarcastic, stand offish she is. But not mean spirited or vicious.

Fair point. I meant to say at worst she's annoyed me, but she's never made me mad. But you're right, I should have looked for a more generous interpretation. I just...don't see any way to do so with her expression.

Look at her eyes. She has the same eyes that Joyce had in panels 4 and 5. The eyes that say 'I regret everything I just did and don't want to be in this situation'. That and the rictus-like awkward grin is not humor. Honestly, I don't see how you got 'I'm being a hateful bitch' smile of joy.

Have you never used it seen a fake smile before?

It's all about context. I am familiar with the character and I read the circumstances leading to this scene.

I guess I just thought Sarah meant it when she said she wanted things to be better, and that she was convinced by Joyce this morning. I guess I was overly hopeful.

Wanting something doesn't make it so. She wants things to be better, but they are not. Not yet at least.

You were "overly hopeful" and yet still automatically accepted the worst interpretation of the scene?

Being overly hopeful is what made me disappointed when I realized I was wrong, I guess it swung me in the other direction. I was wrong on both counts.

Well, the fact that Ruth has not made any direct attempts at suicide suggest that it's not so much that she wants to die as she sees no reason to keep on living. I know that level of depression far to well. I spent a couple of years just not leaving my house unless I was required to do so. Which given that I work from home was usually once every week or two. I remember many times during that... as in nearly constantly, wishing I just didn't exist. My biggest concern with dying alone in that house was whatever poor person would find my body after being dead for weeks.

And whether you like it or not Billie, what happened WAS the best thing that could have happened for Ruth.

That's arguable, given how profoundly dependent Ruth was on the RA position to maintain her fragile sense of self-worth. In any case, Billie isn't thinking rationally; all she knows is that she somehow failed her girlfriend by letting her secret be discovered.

Undoubtedly she does.  But give her and Ruth time and I'm sure they'll sort things out both for themselves and between themselves.

I really feel sorry for Chloe, she's kinda caught between a rock and a hard place over this.  It might be better in the long run if she does do it quickly rather than leaving Ruth hanging and hoping she can come back to the job.  I somehow doubt she will be back at the College for a fair while.
