That's the thing: A huge part of Willis's fanbase was acquired during the long run of It's Walky and its parallel sequels, Joyce and Walky and Shortpacked!. Most of the fans assumptions for the characters come from the Walkyverse, so they will expect them to behave as they did towards the end of J&W and S! and it surprises and even dismays them when this doesn't happen.

DoA's been around for what, six years, though? How do people not realize that this is a completely different comic with completely different characters that just happen to be named after and sorta look like those ones?

Willis has said that they're the same characters IIRC, but raised in an environment where there aren't

Interesting. I honestly couldn't get into the Walkyverse (I read a few years into It's Walky and the one that came before it but whose name I forgot).

Also, if they were raised in a different environment, then they aren't really the same characters.

Think of DoA as a "what if these characters didn't have those things in their world" reboot of the Walkyverse.

There's still a lot of innate nature shared between the Walkyverse and DoAverse incarnations of the characters. And, as they've still got the same parents IIRC, there's still going to be a lot of shared nurture between them, too.

They aren't completely different people though either. They are not carbon copies though, but they do share a majority of personality traits and interests across the settings.

Maybe they're less similar than Willis has let on. It's not likely, but it's apparently possible if this arc is any indication.

So far I'm not seeing anything that is too far away from characterization of other versions of these characters. At this point Leslie has taken a picture, that's it. Obviously it's not 'souvenir of a good time' material here. But we haven't seen what she plans or will do with it yet.

Just how similar or how much of a divergence from the previous comics this will wind up being will be interesting to see.

Yeah, I kind of thought that Leslie wouldn’t be able to do it; it’s just not in her nature to do something like that.

You know what else is entirely in-character? Robin’s whole story from beginning to end as well as her attitude towards Leslie and the whole situation. Sometimes, I don’t know if she’s charmingly and innocently simple or if she’s just a complete sociopath. She literally seems to have no clue and little interest in how her whims affect anyone else.

That said, I can't help but think that it’s kind of sweet that she sort of followed Leslie home like a lost puppy that had been shown affection for the first time in its life and curled up on her bed because it looked 'comfy' (read: reassuring and safe). I wonder what the ‘thing’ was? Is Leslie’s landlord a DeSanto voter? I kid you not; I can actually hear him saying something like: "It was a direct order from a congresswoman! I mean, aren't you supposed to do what they say? Isn't that in the Constitution somewhere?"

That said, I think it's more likely that Robin just told a direct lie like: "I'm Leslie's new girlfriend and I forgot my key." It seems that this Robin, like her DoA counterpart, doesn’t respect or even fully comprehend anyone’s boundaries. I really am starting to wonder if Robin has some kind of sociopathic behaviour disorder. In essence, if she wants something, she will do whatever it takes to get it and basically view the other party as being defective in some way for wanting to deny it to her because she cannot see any reason why they should do so.

Why can't it be both? Though honestly I don't find her charming at all. And I really have to wonder how she became a congresswoman if she's as simple minded as she seems to be. Her behavior goes on to long and at all the wrong times for me to think it's just an act. She really doesn't understand people or what motivates them. And she only cares about what she wants. She can barely muster enough effort to put on an act when it's in her best interest, and drops the act as soon as it's not immediately effective.

Most democracies have the concept of a 'safe seat' where the party machine will install a reliable person so that a completely mindless and loyal vote in the House for that constituency can be guaranteed (knowing that their majority is so great and loyal that a cabbage would probably win the election). Maybe that is how it was for Robin. Recognising a woman so determined to have a position of ease at the top of the pile, lacking the intelligence to get it on merit but quite willing to be a mindless drone for whoever can guarantee her the things she wants, the party machine parachuted Ms DeSanto into what was previously a safe red seat.

I say 'was' because Robin's performance has been so uninspiring and her record in office so empty of achievement (to the point where the size of her breasts are practically the only positive that she can come up with to campaign with) that it looks like the people of Bloomington are willing to vote Democrat to eject her. I suspect that they want to have someone representing them in Congress who will represent them or at least do something other than parrot whatever her political handlers tell her to say and vote whatever way the party leadership tells her to vote.

Naturally, poor Robin doesn't get what she's done wrong... again.

To be fair, that actually is a callback to speculation she made earlier in the comic (based purely on Robin being 30 and unmarried, so the speculation was made using incredibly sexist American "Christian" logic, but...)

The thing about Dorothy or Roz becoming RA is it's not an election or popularity contest. Being liked is one of the least important qualifications. After all, Ruth had the job before them. But going to the residents and getting them on your side is going to mean something between very little and nothing. It's the Resident Manager they need to talk to.

Robin, for someone not interested in having a lesbian relationship, you're reacting pretty strongly to your own double-entendres! Seriously though, I think that we're going to all be surprised to see Leslie[ restraining Robin and telling her to go slow rather than react to her desires and regret later.

You see, as funny as it was watching Becky running around shouting out "Hey! Guess what? I'm a lesbian!", I don't think that it would work so well for Robin.

That aside, I'm really worried about the occupants of those cars. Whoever they are, they're likely trouble for this two. How to deal with it? I'd recommend 'phoning for someone to see off the Paparazzo.

Okay, it took me a while to work out what today's strip (1/9/17) is all about. Maybe I'm not as good at getting Willis's subtle humour and story-telling as I thought.

Look at the tags - he'd have used "other alex" if this was a new character, instead he reused the "alex" tag. (He actually went back and updated all of Jocelyn's tags to match, when he revealed that Jocelyn is a trans woman, too.)

O...k then? I figured reusing Alex as a tag was continuing the joke that one Alex was as good as any other to the indifferent class. Benergy's speculation seemed like a stretch, but apparently Willis actually intended that interpretation. I'm confused but also intrigued.

Edit: Clicked on the tag and...ok, I guess they could be the same person. You guys have a much better memory for background characters than I do.

And don't we already have a well established Trans character in the form of Carla in the Strip?  Not saying there isn't room for another similar character in order to expand the diversity and add a different and fresh perspective on things, which is always a good thing.

Or is Willis going to move to having them two either be best buds or antagonists/protagonists?

Will beintereting to see where this storyline goes.

Oh, that's not at all a criticism, I was just saying that in response to her and Carla being friends/foes specifically because they're trans, which is what I got from your post.

But yeah, if Willis says that Alex is trans...is that a spoiler? I mean already out of the bag here, I just never really know anymore what is and isn't a spoiler.

You do sometimes need a stranger and their distance to see what's really happening and tell you what's good and bad about it. Maybe that's what Joyce (and, to a certain extent, Joe) have needed for a while - a kindly stranger to tell them what's what.
