I found myself wondering if Mary will do a complete heel-face turn; there will be a running joke for a couple of hundred strips about her being a 'pod person' before we find out she was sat down by her pastor (after exulting to him about Billie being 'vulnerable' again) and told that her behaviour was entirely unjustifiable in its sustained malice.

"I hope he never..."

There's a hanging sentence to leave us all wondering...
A few ways that one can end.

(I hate that literally, dramatic cliché. How often do people actually STOP in the middle of a sentence when interrupted by someone else? Never rings true... ESPECAILLY when it's something dramatically laden... I often find myself shouting at the TV when it's used in movies/series' etc)

Of course...

But it's a lazy tactic.
And doesn't actually give any real resolution.

("...out of Hospital." ? "...out of Jail!" ?  "...finds the part of him that you cut off and threw into the bushes!!" ?)

Just seems to be dragging the denouement of this out a bit too long...

I mean, she already explicitly said she wished Amber'd killed him. I think the interruption was less to cut her off and more to show Ruth barging in.

I have to wonder if Willis isn't actually slowly preparing to make Mary a little less... pure freaking evil, I guess.

I mean, all the non-phycho-dad-non-rapist characters in the comic are complex and multidimensional...Save basically for Mary.
She's always been an irredeemably terrible person altogether in every universe she's appeared in.

I do think what JoeCovenant said might very well be on the spot, too.

We've seen Mary doesn't fully respect Carla's gender so to Mary, attraction to a trans person might not affect her concept of her sexuality if she identifies as straight. I can't remember if we've seen if Mary has an issue with homosexuality but it's possible to assume based on her strict Christianity.

She could have issues with non-straight people because of her religion and still not be straight.

True but the point I was making is if she doesn't see Carla as a woman then Mary could still comfortably ID as straight. I don't think she'd be so gleeful if she was dealing with the internal conflict of religious ideals Vs personal identity. Unless it's overcompensating?

Today's strip (8/6) is the one in which Carla learns that Ruth and Billie's circumstances mean that they have a slightly skewed idea of the signs of 'normal and healthy' romantic attraction. I guess when your life is like something out of a romcom, you expect everyone else's to be too!

Mary has shown a great deal of hatred toward Carla in the past, of the clearly not "I secretly love you so I pick on you" kinda. And vice versa. To have Mary suddenly flip on that is unlikely in the extreme. What is more likely is she has taken to the trick of acting super sweet and kind towards your enemy and drive them insane as they try to figure out what you are up to.

We don’t know that Mary is definitely straight.

She was straight in "It's Walky!" wasn't she? (I don't remember... only that she did get knocked-up after a drunken tangle)

And Willis has said that no-one changes snuggle-buddy preferences in DoA from that universe...

We know that she was sexually attracted to men in that universe. We don't know whether or not she was straight, although AFAIK she wasn't shown to be attracted to women.

AFAIK there is a Walkyverse character (I think Danny?) who was never shown to be attracted to the same sex in the Walkyverse, but is bi in DoA. Basically, while Willis can't make a presumed straight character from the Walkyverse gay while following that rule, he can make a presumed straight character bi and it still work, especially if they're attracted to a character that they never met in the Walkyverse (and Mary never met Ultra Car in the Walkyverse, AFAIK).

Edit: Added "presumed" in places.

Remember that not everyone who reads DOA has read other Willis' material, and we request spoilers when getting into the details of those.

This actually sounds very plausible after this interaction. If Mary didn't grab the box off Carla, she wouldn't have got pie'd and the big obvious thing was a red herring. Although Carla was intentionally baiting Mary into getting nervous and paranoid but with shenanigans instead of sweetness.

Indeed, I too think he's trying to seduce Mary and, when he gets what he wants (the virginity of a 'chaste' Christian girl), he'll dump her in the cruellest of ways and no doubt boast about his 'achievement' to his friends.

So we're thinking she's been *chosen* from "Joe's List"...?
Quite possibly. Although this guy would have to have been a fast mover?
It's still only "Three days after", isn't it?

BUt... after one anti-climactic 'potential rapist' story... we're going to get another similar themed one for Mary?
I don't know if I can see that happening.

I know in the past Willis said he wished he hadn't made Mary pregnant in Walky universe.
I guess an, "I got mine, beeyatch!", deflowering would be of similar *punishment* status...?

FWIW, I don't think that this is 'similar themed' to the Ryan arc. If you're right that Peter has selected Mary from Joe's list, then this is more specifically about the consequences of Joe's thoughtless actions.

I think, in Mary's mind, she'd see them as similar... except worse, as she'd actually have been 'violated'...

I think I've said this before but I suspect that, the more Joyce and Joe get to know each other, the more the two of them seem to be developing a true filial love for each other, being the close sibling that the other never really had (I get the impression that Joyce had an issue of being the 'only girl' that was something of a barrier with her siblings; I think that this is one reason why she became so close to Becky).

I love Joyce's growing pout towards the end of the 8/13 strip. She doesn't want to be "that weird girl who has to pick apart her food"; it's embarrassing in lots of ways and she's increasingly finding that it's impacting on her life. She's a bit resentful that Joe has noticed and has brought it up. However, things are what they are and it's nice of Joe to think of that in keeping a donut aside for her.

It's going to be just another stick for her mother to use to beat her, though, isn't it? Her closest female friend is an atheist and her closest male friend is Jewish. She just can't win with Carol.

With some parents, you really just can't. Or becoming who they expect you to be will destroy everything that makes you, you. In the end, you have to choose to sacrifice yourself or leave.

It's worth noting that Joyce is autobiographical for Willis.

(This spoiler actually does spoil where that whole arc is going.)

The key lesson from the 8/14 strip, at least for me, is that kind words said without mean intent, can cut far deeper than any angry reproof.

This is not a ship.

Since day one (more or less) I've firmly believed that Joe does actually feel *love* for joyce.

I think he just has a problem with understanding what that means.
