Well it's the week after one of the biggest moments (and, possibly, one of the most controversial moments) in the history of QC. Where can we go from here?

I feel that owe fellow members something of an explanation. The reason that I keep saying 'time skip' is twofold. Firstly, for the past few weeks I've on several occasions felt that Jeph is wrapping up short-term plot-lines and the only real way to move forwards is to jump ahead to a point in-universe when the longer-term plot lines start to mature. Secondly, I really didn't think that there was any way for Jeph to get certain milestones past in character interactions in the current in-universe time frame.

I think last week probably proved me wrong on both those

To me, there are two obvious themes for next week and both are associated with Claire and Marten:

Firstly, Clairten Pillow Talk - This idea puts me in mind of the episode epilogues in Hill Street Blues, which were inevitably Capt Frank Furillo and his lover, Joyce Davenport (a lawyer in the DA's office), in bed together talking about the lessons learned in the episode. You could probably pull something similar off with Marten and Claire just spending five joke-per-day strips in bed together, talking about their friends and what happens next in a character-building way.

Alternately, you could have The Morning After the Night Before - I more or less suggested this in last week's thread when I outlined some strips that could indicate how other characters might react to the change in the precise nature of Marten and Claire's relationship.

There are other options but it would require an arc focus switch.

What do you guys (and gals) think?

I can take Marten/Claire as read at this point.

Dora has just burned bridges with her brother and her best friend in under a week. If we don't check in with her soon, I am going to feel cheated.

Poor Marten. Everyone keeps keeping him up all night.

Next he'll be kept awake by Pintsize singing murder ballads from the closet in which he's been locked. Then Dora will call looking for advice on handling Faye; Sven will call for advice on handling Dora. Sunup. Veronica will call insisting that Marten and Claire join she and Jim for breakfast. Hanners will require help with something vaguely shady but disturbingly nonspecific (that later turns out to be nothing). Steve will call Marten for drinks. Marten will pass out at the bar, and fall asleep for the next 72 hours of comic time (four to five weeks real time), whereupon Jeph will tie off a few remaining dangly plot points. Marten will wake up, wonder why everyone's acting so different, and refuse to believe he's only been out a few days.

Yeah, the Svenpocalypse has been just kind of hanging now for so long, and the Faye issues added on, it just seems like stuff with Dora just happens and then we see nothing else from it again.

@Aziraphale,

I can see Marten walking into the kitchen, looking at the clock and seeing that the time is something past midday. He panics and starts trying to get dressed for work, eat a truncated breakfast and take care of personal hygiene all at once. Claire will stop him and tell him that he's got the day off. Tai had told her yesterday that he could have until Monday off so he could help Faye get her feet underneath her again.

"Did you turn off my alarm clock?"

"Yeah, I did." Then he'd kiss her and thank her.

It would be a nice little moment reminding us that they are all friends and that, professionalism aside, everyone goes out of their way to help a friend. Especially when said friend is helping a friend himself.

I daresay that Friday's strip wrapped up the Marten & Claire show for now; I think that coming up next we'll see an update on Pintsize (one strip or part thereof I guess) and progress on Dora's timeline (at least a couple, chatting with others). Plus Faye, more shakeouts from the Fayepocalypse as the dust settles.

I have fingers crossed Pintsize & Faye interact more during their mutual recoveries.. he's shown he does know the companion role well, and I think his different take on it and blunter approach would suit Faye much more than it does Marten. I don't think his hidden depths are entirely filled with porn..

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to check whether you can be arsed reading that post and possibly editing your own, and if not, simply go ahead & post anyway.

Good lord.. I've neither watched nor even thought of HSB for many a decade - and didn't actually watch it myself when it was on back in the day, I 'twas but a nipper - yet upon reading that I instantly got the theme tune in my head again!  :police:
Anyway, carry on..

This is possible, especially since Pintsize did say to May at one point that his work with Marten was pretty much done.

Ben: I like the thought of that.

(On second thought, Dora probably shouldn't give Faye that amount of trust until she's gone through some therapy and been sober for a decent length of time, but it would be nice to see them reconciled eventually.)

I was just thinking- he took Faye to the hospital at night, and they stayed there quite some hours, but apparently not more than one day. It could only be like, 2, and that might be why he doesn't want to sleep, in case it messes him up more to go to bed early and change that whole thing.

I'm assuming he's mainly awake by chance, but avoiding too many naps isn't a bad time, if it's daytime.

FWIW, I think that Sven/Faye was meant to be a long-term thing with Faye basically teaching Sven the ways of non-doucheness and the two finding happiness and meaning together. However, I think that Jeph just decided that he didn't want to do it for various reasons. Maybe he worked out some Faye arcs that he found more interesting for which he thought Sven would be an impediment.

My unlikely prediction for this week:  Claire and Marten are kissing in his bed when they're interrupted by knocking on the door.  When Marten opens the door he finds Padma on the other side, who greets him with a very aggressive kiss.  Chaos ensues.

There's a few different versions, each with different preparation. There's a Pennsylvania version and a Southern version (broadly speaking), with variations on both.

Some Canadians do, in fancy hipster bars/diners. And bless them for it. I first had chicken and waffles down in California, and I'll be damned if it wasn't the best thing I've eaten. But it's very much a southern thing.

As for the upcoming strip, I hope we have a Dora/Faye/Sven arc next. I want to see where that goes.
