I don't think glasses really get in the way of sex.  They do, however, really get in the way of foreplay makeouts and cuddles afterward, considering how uncomfortable it is to lay on your side while wearing them.

That aside, there is a teenage feel to this exchange that makes me think that Marten is new to emotional intimacy. Although he is sexually experienced, that was mostly physical with the added benefit of friendship.
New Relationship Energy can make anyone feel young again. Marten and Dora were totally head over heals when their relationship was new, and he's described the first months of his relationship with Vicky in glowing terms.

There's more than one way to be kinky. Just sayin'. :P

Badgers.

What's kinky about that? My wife does that all the time.

To the corner with you.

Also: Please, let's get the story on with Faye, or Dora/Sven, or Pintsize, or Hannelore, or CoD employee fallout...

I hadn't even thought about the CoD employee/customer fallout. I don't know if it'd be as over-the-top as Ben's scenario, but that's going to be interesting either way. I don't think Faye's going to end up back there as an employee. But I could see a scenario where Dora defending Faye to her employees A: reinforces why she fired her in the first place, but also B: makes her realize that she doesn't like the way things are left... which could, in turn, lead to the two of them having a much-needed conversation.

Yeah! Forum is back up. And a new Comic. Good on you Faye. Maybe not what you want to do, but it sure is what you should do.

BTW, also, if you haven't read Jeph's comment from yesterday on his blog, go read it now. http://jephjacques.com/

High fives for Faye.  That wasn't easy.   I hope these are the first steps on a journey towards good things.

Interesting that she didn't tell Marten in the hospital about that one. Maybe she wanted to prove she could do it herself.

That seems possible. Its also possible that at that time, she wasn't quite ready to commit 100% to quitting. It definitely seemed like there was a moment of hesitation in panel 5, at the very least.

I think that this is a good sign on her part.

It's gonna be interesting in the morning though when she runs into Claire.

Good on you, Faye! Now, if there's any others hanging around the apartment, you should follow up and dump those as well.

And then sleep in because you can.

It's nice to see Faye remove the booze out of her own accord... I don't know why she has to throw it away and not, I don't know, give it to somebody who might like it (all of her friends drink enough... well except for Penelope, and it's hard to say if she's a friend of Faye's) but it makes for a dramatic scene, especially since it seems that she was tempted, but decided not to. Good for her.

That was one of the most emotionally-charged strips I've ever seen! When you look at Faye's obvious intent to sneak and do things without Marten's knowledge in panels 1 and 3, her clear conflict in panel 5 and her muttered curses in Panel 6, you realise just how bad Faye has it right now.

All those little voices in her head (panels 1-4): "Go on!" "One mouthful won't hurt!" "It'll help you sleep whilst those two are making out next door!" "You know you want it!" This conflicting with other voices reminding her of her bender and how close she came to serious harm only yesterday. Thinking of Marten begging her never to do that again. Thinking of her own horror at what she has done to herself.

Then, fighting against her own inclinations every step of the way, she pours the liquor down the sink. As she does so, those little voices screaming at her: "No! You IDIOT! You NEED that to live!"

Faye Whitaker is an alcoholic but, I think, she didn't realise it before this moment.

I strongly suspect that Marten and Claire will come into the kitchen tomorrow morning to find Faye curled up at the base of the sink, crying hysterically because she's addicted to alcohol and she never knew it before. It will be news to Marten too, IMO. I don't think he's ever thought of her as an alcoholic, just as a heavy drinker who let it get away from her that one time.

Powerful bit of writing and brilliant bit of sequential art from Jeph. Well done!

I seem to remember, back when Faye was staying at Hannelore's while Marten got rid of all the booze in the house, reading someone saying Faye was way too calm and cooperative so she had to have a hidden one stashed away somewhere. That person can give themselves a round of applause.

Over on the Subreddit, one poster suggested that Faye and Claire may bond around the subject of how to deal with personal self-esteem issues. Ultimately, they're both struggling with their personal feelings of self-worth and whether they can ever get better. It's a perspective that Claire would have that Marten, for all his kindness and his love for his 'sister', simply couldn't offer.

Having a friend who understands on a personal level is a great aid to confronting these sort of issues.

Okay, I've looked at this strip on two different devices on two different IP addresses and it's in both, so it can't be me. Look just at the hem of Faye's vest over her right breast in Panels 1, 4 & 5 - Can anyone see a curving line running up across her skin? Does she have a tattoo there that I haven't noticed before?

There's a big difference between throwing away your "last" empty, and throwing away the actual substance with which you have a problem. This speaks very well for Faye's chances.

Hmmm this bodes well for Faye's future.  However I wonder if there is more stashed away somewhere in the house.  Not shiting on Faye here but this strip really confirms her as an alcoholic  or Damn close to one, and she is the type to have more than one bottle laying around.

Good on Faye, that took guts.  My prediction for the rest of the week:

WEDNESDAY
Faye dumps several more bottles she "forgot" to tell Marten about down the sink.  She finishes, looking exhausted, and starts to head back to bed--before noticing Pintsize crumpled in the corner where he was last left.

THURSDAY
Faye powers Pintsize back up.  He immediately starts swearing at her for shutting him off, she apologizes profusely and explains her situation.
FAYE: Look, I promise, as soon as I'm back on my feet, I'll get you a new chassis that can't be shut down so easily.  You deserve that, at least.
PINTSIZE: Can I have thumbs, too?
FAYE: Don't push it.
PINTSIZE: So, where you gonna get the money?
Faye looks thoughtful, then....

FRIDAY
Faye knocking frantically on someone's front door.  Dora opens it, looking startled.
DORA: Faye?  What the hell, it's 3 AM!
FAYE: I'm not asking for my job back.
DORA: I wasn't going to--
FAYE: But I need my welding space.
DORA: Faye...
FAYE: I know, I know, I fucked up.  I pushed Angus away, I betrayed your trust, I don't have a job anymore, I don't know how I'm going to make things up to Marten yet.  This is all I have left.  I need an outlet!  It's either that, or the booze, or--or your brother--
She stops, looking defeated.  Dora surveys her for a moment, then gives her a hug.

Bonus panel:
TAI (from bedroom): ARE YOU GONNA INVITE HER IN FOR A THREESOME, OR WHAT?

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You'd better make sure BenRG didn't beat you to the punch with his own post.  Gosh, wouldn't that be embarrassing?

I don't think so, or if she does, she's about to dig them out and send them the same way.  This is an act of strength and fear, and any thing less than completion obviates it completely.

Might be interesting to see if she does a whole batch. I... recently... flushed a whole cache of booze down the sink myself. Even after giving away the good, unopened stuff, I still had a heck of a lot and the stench of all those different drinks being poured down the sink was surprisingly strong and pervasive.

It is a good start. A lot more similar small acts of self-discipline are necessary if Faye is to get rid of her addiction.

Yes, and its a step she took herself instead of having someone do it for her. Help is fine and all but sometimes you need to do something for yourself to prove to yourself that you can.

Good for Faye. Good for the story, too; it remains appropriately heavy because she's obviously struggling and  hasn't been magically cured, but there's hope and promise in her resolve.

listens "what was that, people who were insisting that Faye's drinking wasn't alcoholism? You've changed your mind?!"

I like that this arc portrays alcoholism in a slightly different light. People are taught to look for specific signs of alcoholism in movies and tv, and honestly those signs are not always how alcoholism presents itself.

From experience, the thought that "well, maybe I should just give this to one of my still-drinking friends" very, very easily slides into "but they didn't pay for it and they'll be able to drink the rest of their lives" to "do I really want my last drink ever to have been during that epic blackout? It's just a pint..." I think that Faye got up in the middle of the night because she could hear that pint talking to her. Believe me, it is the sweetest, most reasonable and seductive voice in the universe.

Exactly. When you have an addiction, and there's something like that around, every second is another second you could slip. If you were dealing with any of it rationally, you wouldn't have the addiction at all.

He's on third, but we're not talking about him.

Who aren't we talking about?

Also, I could have used another panel of Faye holding the bottle, either deciding or gathering the willpower, etc.

I don't see what The Doctor has to do with any of this.

I'm always amazed at how quickly people edit the past to declare things like "Marten was never in love with Dora, see how he acts with Claire" (I think this was in another thread), while ignoring that they absolutely had similar chemistry near the beginning of them dating.

I'm a bit late but I've never found glasses to get in the way during sex, they've never fallen off or fogged. They might get smudged with all the body parts flying about but it's still better with them because my vision is so bad I can't see my partner without them. Plus I know my partner likes the look of them, especially looking over the glasses while making eye contact.

On today's comic, I'm really proud of Faye.

I think we'll stick with the Faye story arc for a bit. Here's why: Last week, Jeph tweeted, "[This story is] coming from a personal place, yes, but I finally have the distance necessary to write about it." There is something emotionally cathartic about writing about things that have happened in the past and this might be Jeph's way to achieve peace (for lack of a better word, sorry) with what happened to him a couple years ago.

(If this has been brought up in previous WCDTs, sorry; with the flurry of new posts, it's been difficult to track what has been opined!)

With apologies for quoting myself from last week's WCDT, I believe that Faye's story is a retelling of Jeph's own experiences from a couple years ago. The commentary below the comic on this one is, simply, "been there, done that." Is this Jeph's way of achieving closure with that? Possibly...

The beauty of Q.C.'s storytelling as of late is that not one word more than necessary has been used. Thank you, Jeph.

Good on Faye, that took guts.  My prediction for the rest of the week:
WEDNESDAY
THURSDAY
FRIDAY
Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You'd better make sure BenRG didn't beat you to the punch with his own post.  Gosh, wouldn't that be embarrassing?

My prediction for Wednesday:
Faye sees Claire walk into the apartment's bathroom wearing a bedsheet (and obviously naked underneath).
Faye says something along the lines of "Woohoo!Little duck got some! Way to go!"
But Faye being Faye it comes out snarky, Claire get so embarrassed, she then blushes SO hard that her whole body turns red.
And redder, and redder, even more red, and then so red that she shifts into the infrared, and disappears!
Thus starting the superhero arc of Pizza Girl, VespaVenger, and The Invisible Librarian (a.k.a. The Dewey Decimator!)

I have not seen a fairy tale romance such as Claire and Marten's in sometime. It gives me hope for love again. <3
