RIP - Sir Terry Pratchett (1948 - 2015)
« on: 12 Mar 2015, 08:28 »

Terry Pretchett dies aged 66

So, farewell then, Sir Terry. The man who made us laugh but also made us think with his sharp sci-fi and fantasy-themed satires of our world that made us question just how sane a world could be that could fit into a mad fantasy world so easily. His cruel illness threatened to rob him of the art he loved but he still had the ability to entertain and challenge the reader to the last. He will be greatly missed; British literature, indeed English-language literature, has lost one of its greatest modern lights.

Of all of the people in the world, he is the one that I hope that Death has taken too early. I like to imagine him sat in the kitchen chatting with Albert and Lady Susan over a nice bowl of fried porridge.

RIP

I'm sure I'm not the only Pratchett fan here - didn't Dora love his books too? My thoughts are with his family. I hope he met the Death he was expecting.

A sad day for fans of humorous science fiction and fantasy.

I'll have to re-read a couple of his books this weekend in his memory.

RIP Pterry, You'll be missed.

Terrible, sad news. Someone linked this to me just now:

Oh no!

I'm in the middle of Raising Steam.  I guess that's the last of the Discworld novels.

I will really miss his writing.

His books meant a lot to me and helped me through some really tough times when I was younger. Thank you Terry Pratchett.

This would almost be the ideal place for the Boss to talk about how Sir Terry affected him and his life. It's probably going to have a huge effect on writing Alice Grove, for sure.

I don't really know what to say here. It's the only memorial thread that I've felt that I want to post in and I've got nothing.

"Thank you" seems silly - he's dead, he can't read this. But I think that if I had the chance to say one thing to him, that would be it.

Nope. There's one more coming. Tiffany Aching book. And, and, and ... Mr. Pratchett gave his daughter his blessing to continue writing Discworld novels, so who knows ...

IIRC, she said she wouldn't want to, because she wouldn't write them the same. I may have imagined that though.

I'm pretty sure that you're right.  Although I do seem to remember her planning on taking an active hand on live-action adaptations.

I loved his novels ever since I was a young'n. They were a joy to read, and something of an emotional safety blanket when things got shitty. I'm not ashamed to admit when I found out at work, I had to sniffle quietly and hope no-one came in.
