heh, I thought this topic was going to be about how the realism in the series has ramped up over time, making previously-funny things like female-on-male abuse seem a lot less funny.

Apparently snooty, angry baristas was a pretty common thing for a while- not sure how true that still is. The internet has quadrupled the amount of sass some retailers have with customers.

This article seems to bear out the realism of QC, or at least it demonstrates that Tai has plenty of real-life counterparts in (real) Northampton. Because the list of 100 locations twice mentions Smith's library.

I don't think i could ever write some of the scenes that go down in QC. maybe it's due to real life experiences (which i know Jeff has too before anyone says) but the idea of making a whole world and people and their social lives and deliberately making them suffer and have misunderstands and behave like Dora has recently... i just couldn't do that, it would feel so cruel to me.

part of me would think "you are in control of these lives, why do you choose for them to suffer?"

But hasn't Jeph made it mostly clear he wants his characters to be good to each other, to succeed? Or am I mis-remembering what he's said about them elsewhere? Aside from that, many storytellers acknowledge that their characters develop a mind and will of their own.
