Reasons why this is crap:

1. It starts out easy enough, and then the you realize the past tense of ‘lie’ is also the present tense of ‘lay.’

2. Once you lay a book on the desk, it isn’t laying there. It’s lying there.

Even after all that, you think you’ve got it right, but then…

3. When you go on vacation, you spend your time lying on the beach, not laying in the sand - unless you’re doin’ the nasty, in which case you would be ‘laying someone in the sand’ (and getting sand all up in your… you know).

I still think it would have been awesome if, after a long run of jokes about Mrs. Columbo, he was revealed to have been gay the entire time. Kind of a reverse of Mr. Green from the Clue movie.

A series of jokes one of my students told me this week:

Why did Sally fall off the swing? She ain't got no arms.

Why did the monkey fall out of the tree? Got shot.

Why did a second monkey fall out of the tree? He was stapled to the first monkey.

Knock Knock?
"Who's there?"
Not Sally, she ain't got no arms.

The unexpectedness of it got me.

Except GH doesn't make the F sound at the start of a word, and AFAIK no word in Engnish that ends in TI makes the SH sound, so at best, GHOTI is pronounced as "goty" with either a short or long O.

English may be absurd, but it still has rules.

As far as the 'ough' lesson goes, I don't hear a difference between 'through' and 'slough'.  I'd pronounce ough the same in both words.

I pronounce through as "throo", and slough as "slow", with the "ow" spoken to rhyme with plough (US: plow). I pronounce though as "thoe" to rhyme with toe and dough. For me, the three sounds are quite distinct, but I don't think there is a consistent rule about -ough that makes them so. I just had to memorise them arbitrarily as part of my ESL training, where we were aiming for "educated standard Australian" pronunciation.
(click to show/hide)

As for "the Beast":

Edit: It occurred to me later that slough can also be pronounced "sluff", as in a snake sloughing off its skin. English is so weird.

The lemon battery is interesting. What the presenter calls "zinc nails" are what I would call "galvanised nails". Is it American English to talk about zinc nails, or is it just the speaker's ESL showing?

Googling "zinc nails" gave me the lemon battery as one of the first results, so maybe. Although apparently a nail can be galvanized in things other than zinc, so perhaps they were being specific.
