Bit old-timey, but still fairly common, yes. Apparently, it's student-slang from Goethe's time that became so popular it even entered medical textbooks.

Alternatively, hungover Germans are said to "have a Tomcat" ('einen Kater haben').

I would not have thought that constipation would enhance military effectiveness. Does the military rely on terror to open the bowels?  :-o

I have never sampled an MRE. My Dad told me that the field rations were awful when he was in the army in the '70s, but they seem to be better now (the reviewer is from Hong Kong, and struggles a bit with Simplified Characters).
