Quote
Instructions for a walk in the woods

-Never turn around to check behind you. You’ll see nothing, but once you start doing it you won’t be able to stop, and an ominous feeling will follow you until you don’t lock your house’s door behind you.
-If you stand very still and listen you will hear the woods calling for you. Don’t answer. Never answer.
-You’ll hear things quietly following you, hidden in the trees by your sides. It’s okay, they’re just checking on you.
-Don’t be scared, but be really, really wary.
-If you have a bad feeling about taking a certain path, don’t. You’ll avoid whatever is waiting for you at the end of it.
-You never know what may be buried under the soil you’re walking on. Remember that every time you take a step. Pray that whatever it is, it won’t wake up.
-Be careful not to step on any beetle, or you’ll never get rid of them.
-If you bring a knife with you, name it. Otherwise the blade will turn against you as soon as you try to use it.
-Make sure you remember the way back home. As soon as you get lost, you’re just another piece of fresh meat.

Tell me more about the spiders!!!  Do they eat mice etc?

I sort of reached that 'farrk living there' conclusion about Australia, when cataloging the venomous snakes in our respective habitats.  As a boy I had to worry about only three kinds:  Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths, and Water Moccasins.  Most of the things I might meet on a given day weren't trying to kill me, and furthermore weren't equipped to do so if they had wanted to.

By contrast, as I understand it, in Australia pretty much EVERY species of snake is lethally venomous.

Of the 25 most venomous species of snakes in the world, 20 are indigenous to Australia. Not all our snake species are venomous, but I believe Australia is the only country in which the majority of snake species are venomous. I have venomous snakes and spiders in my garden, but it's no big deal. I leave them alone, and they leave me alone. I do wear gloves and boots when gardening though. ;)

So, last night I'm sitting surfing the net while my partner sits in the next room listening to 80s music.

Then:

*80s music pauses*
*silence*
"yanny...yanny... yanny..."
"For God's sake...!"
*80s music resumes* 🎶

malcolm in the middle sequel where everyone is older except for dewey who is the same exact age

Series finale reveals Dewey as the centuries-old family patriarch when Hal’s latest hobby (capoeira) shatters the hourglass containing his tormented soul. Dewey knows he’s not yet made his penance to the world but calmly accepts he can never change what happened in 1346 and that maybe he deserves the peace of death after all. The final shot of the show sees Dewey, surrounded by his loving family, as ages rapidly into a cadaver, a skeleton, dust, and finally a single humble flower, as the screen fades to black and we hear a final echo of “life is unfair”

I've been seeing "yanny or laurel" lately so I decided to look it up. Apparently if you listen to google pronounce laurel some people hear yanny.

So I took up this challenge.  It sounds like laurel to me.  I recruited some of my co-workers, they all hear laurel as well.

I don't get it. :venonat:

Apparently it may partly be to do with the quality of your speakers and which frequencies dominate what you hear: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-44151302/yanny-or-laurel-the-sound-dividing-the-internet

Don't start!

FWIW, when I first heard it I was told it was my ears. Then I heard it on a different device and it changed, so I thought it was the speakers. Then I listened on the same device later and it flipped again (and has done so almost every time I've subsequently re-listened), so I've come to the conclusion, as I so often do, that it's all in my head.

Here's a version that moves the pitch up and down. See what this does to you.

Just a heads-up; I'm going into hospital very early tomorrow for some minor but necessary surgery. It's supposed to be the same-day in-and-out but I've been kept in overnight before due to post-operative blood oxygenation issues, so no-one panic if I don't post until late Monday/Tuesday!
