I just had to make my dad understand the DVD he had put in his player didn't go full screen because it is one of those 16:9 videos put in a 4:3 containers displayed on a 16:9 display. Or in other words: it would fill your screen fullscreen if the video didn't have black bars top and bottom, and the player didn't add black bars left and right to not distort the picture.

Last week i helped my dad find out why a DVD didn't scale properly. took me over an hour to realize it wasn't SD video not being scaled to 4k properly, but a 16:9 video letterboxed to 4:3 on a 16:9 display.

Looks to me sort of like the guys who were supposed to do the routine maintenance on these buildings embezzled the budget or something, instead.

But it also seems like nobody wants to do the repairs to make up for that and make them useful again, either, which is kind of a shame.

There was this Tom Hanks movie that they really should have found a way to show, as well.  'Big' came out in 1988, though, so it was 11 years old at the time.  Sometimes drive-ins and little theaters here and there can make a living showing movies more than 5 years old, but it's not very mainstream.

Still, it looks like they had a running gag going, right?

That said, those marquee signs with the movable letters are literally the easiest thing in the world to photoshop.  You can make a sign like that say anything in a picture and it's mostly impossible to tell it got futzed with.  So, these days, I can never quite believe a photo of one of them showing anything funny or risque is as real as it appears to be.

Which is a shame, because doubting such things tends to make the world a little less magical and cool.

True dat, but if they wanted to make it fly they ought to have pics of the marquee taken at different times of year or at different times of day or in different weather conditions, etc.
