As of the strip for Wednesday (No. 2954), Jeph is 46 strips from 3,000 (give or take guest strips, fillers and birthdays). It's notable that today, he mentioned on Twitter "Sometimes I wonder if QC will be the only 2003 comic left eventually." The good news is that "eventually," which indicates that the end game is a ways off yet.
Which brings up two thoughts:
1. Jeff has occasionally, but not always, done something special for "round numbers:" "The Talk" at 500, old lady nudity at 1,000, Pintsize the Thumblord at 1,500.
But not always - 2,000 was in the midst of the "Momo's new look" arc, 2,500 in the middle of the Dale Meets May arc. He's been just as likely to mark numbers with meaning - 666, 1337, etc. With a lot of plot irons in the fire yet, he may pick 3,000 for a major character development/introduction/departure, or he may do Yelling Bird reading from The Urban Dictionary. You never know, which is one thing I think a lot of us like. Just something to keep an eye on.
2 After 3,000...who knows how many more? I think if you told Jeph on the day he pur QC No. 1 on the web that he'd be doing at least 3,000 of them, his hand would have involuntarily cramped. His Twitter posts seem to show him these days sometimes having rough days, either because he's tired or the demons are having a better day than he is. Then again it IS his life's work, and that can be a pretty big incentive/hammer over your head.
Either way, he's taken us on a great ride, and he continues, in my opinion, to do so.
