No, because I have seen maybe eight minutes of Mitch Hedberg in my life :mrgreen:

And I don't think he's that funny.

SHOTS FIRED

Anyway, the point is, there's a difference between a joke that's funny for its surrealism and a parody-type remark that doesn't work.

Respectfully disagree as to Mitch Hedberg's quality as a comedian, but the point can be made of most comedians. I chose that example because I was eating Subway at that exact moment. I could sit here and analyze comedy with you all day, but I have tomato sprouts to tie to the trellis, and more immediately, a nap to take, so you know.

Obviously, to paraphrase a little-remembered Jerry Lewis film called Funny Bones, comedy is like watching someone in a skirt get out of a car; sometimes you see it, and sometimes you don't. It's all subjective.

But to use a different example.

Parody joke about George W. Bush that makes sense - making a joke about him being an alcoholic, an idiot, a warmonger or a fundamentalist, off the top of my head. There are more I can't be bothered to make sense of. So, to make a terrible joke, 'I don't know whether to watch a documentary about George W. Bush or alcoholism.' 'What's the difference?' Doesn't even really make sense, and also isn't funny, but at least makes reference to a well known thing about George Bush.

Parody joke about George W. Bush that wouldn't make sense - let's say, 'I don't know whether to watch a documentary about George W. Bush or the Ancient Egyptians.' 'What's the difference?'

My original point was, comparing Alanis Morissete's songs to rom-coms makes no sense because her songs are not like rom coms.

Also, I should've originally said 'I don't find Mitch Hedberg funny.'

Since when does accuracy affect humor? Do you listen to Mitch Hedberg and get pissed that ducks DON'T eat free at Subway?
Wait - they don't? Because I have never, ever seen a duck actually pay for its meal at Subway.

I can see the comparison between 'Ironic' and a rom-com. Since that's the only Alanis Morissette song I'm aware of, well, I get the similarities. Reading the end of it feels like a mission statement for a certain type of romantic comedy.

It's a matter of what you know. To me, your joke about Dubya being an alcoholic isn't relevant to anything because that side of his personality isn't talked about in the deeply-conservative red state I've lived in since birth. It's just not a term that comes to mind in connection with him.

I never get why they blindly remove everything. Full eps, sure. But clips? You should absolutely want people spamming free publicity over the internet for you.

That's probably what jwhouk meant.  Originally, fans were uploading their own low-quality MP clips, so Monty Python loaded their own, better-quality versions, complete with ads for the Flying Circus collection and other material.  Worked like a charm.

That flippant remark isn't even an accurate joke!

Since when does accuracy affect humor? Do you listen to Mitch Hedberg and get pissed that ducks DON'T eat free at Subway?

Yes, but mostly because I think the ducks deserve a break.  It's bad enough that they've gotta spend their miserable short lives in duck bodies, but now they don't even get a free meal?

Okay so maybe Subway doesn't count as a meal, but you get the idea...

Ducks get to be masters of land, water and air though.

Well, ok, barely passable on land and water and kinda mediocre in the air.

What am I expecting for strip 3,000? This is a guess but I'd like it to be Dora to propose to Tai. The major running thread for about 500-1000 strips afterward will be dominated by the massive repercussions, no matter what answer she gets.

Another webcomic's forum did a huge speculation about what was going to be in the x00'th strip, what we got was this. We got something special for the 500th (though I wasn't reading the strip at that point) but I don't think Jeph had many plans at the start to continue much past that. Oh how he was proved wrong. There might be something iconic in the 3000th strip but I don't think that Jeph is significantly altering the timescale of his plots to make that happen.

ClaireHair would grow into an eldritch abomination, gingery tentacles and adorably tiny headgear, turning all who see it into empty-headed gibbering fools, too overcome by adorbs to continue the neccessities of life on earth.

Pintsize, no longer constrained by the will of mortal man and his silly ideals of 'decency,' and 'restraint,' and immune to the concepts of 'cute,' would become supreme ruler, unleashing untold millennia of obscenities and hilarity.

Well, it's the big 3-triple-zero next Friday! Just from where the strip is at the moment, I can guess three possible big events:
  • Faye gets a new job and there is some surprise twist involved;
  • Some fallout from what happens this week between Clinton and Emily (could be a nasty Wham! if Clinton dumps Emily);
  • Something else Faye-related; maybe Angus comes back for a visit.
Do you guys have any ideas?

I'd go with Faye's new job. Clinton and Emily aren't really established as a couple, so them not continuing to date wouldn't be a big deal.

Depends on your keyboard layout and/or OS. I mean, it's Option-o on a Mac (or AltGr-o on the third-party "United States-Macintosh" layout for Windows), but on something like a standard US layout on Windows? Alt-0248 isn't exactly easy to remember.

You could always switch your keyboard layout if you really need the character. Or substitute a character from the keyboard layout you're using: Deathmġle.  :roll:

Couldn't find it on any of the options on my Moto keypad. Opted for the substitution, figuring people would see I acknowledged it but would get the gist and not pettifog. Then I remembered I was on da intertubez.

Honestly you'd probably have had better luck just putting the o in there and not calling attention to it :parrot:

And if you really wanted to have fun with it you could have replaced the ĝ with a u.  :-D
