Isn't she only 21?
I thought she was supposed to be the same age as Angus (they went to college together), though I may be wrong.

Oh right. I guess we've never learned her age. Although I wouldn't be surprised if Angus/Marigold are younger than Faye/Marten.

Pintsize is just a pervert most of the time, doing nothing useful for his human companion. Still, Marten seems OK with that, and is happy having him around (but is reluctant to take him outside their apartment).

Pintsize doesn't do anything useful now, but your comment gave me an attack of memory and I eventually found comic 2332. While he pretty much does nothing useful for Marten during the timeframe of the comic, Pintsize claimed that for two years in the time before the comic started, he was Marten's only friend. It wasn't until Marten met Steve (before the comic began) and then Faye (directly after the comic began) that Pintsize felt he could relax a little (spend more time looking at pornography).

It puts an interesting light on Marigold and Momo's relationship, as perhaps one day Marigold will be at a stage where Momo feels she will not die of a heart attack before she is forty or commit social suicide if she isn't there to watch over her. On the other hand, Pintsize also said to Momo there are plenty of ways to be an AI companion and her and Marigold had a different dynamic than the one he has with Marten so I could be talking out of my hat there.

It makes me wonder if AI companionship program exists to help socially unskilled humans, or if a higher proportion of humans who decide to enter companionship contracts with AIs do so because they have trouble connecting with their fellow humans.

This dropped a scene into my head: It's the end of Dale and Marigold's wedding reception. The bride and groom are riding off into the sunset and Momo is standing next to May.

MAY: "So, girl scout, now what?

MOMO: "Now... I want to live for myself for a while."

MAY: "Good girl! You know, I bought myself a touring bike from my savings and there is a big, big world out there!"

MOMO: "Downloading the complete ouvre of Jack Kirouak. *BLEEP* Okay, girlfriend! Let's do this!"

My guess is if Dale and Marigold ever got hitched, it'd be at the courthouse. Neither seems into finery for its own sake.

At that point Momo might want to consider her options. If Dale/Marigold actually did get pregnant, Momo might end up stuck on diaper duty.

The subject of Momo possibly taking care of Margold for years in the future made me think: what is the lifespan of QC's AI?

Can they live forever, as long as they have somewhere to store their "mind"?

I do recall seeing a comic title saying QC-verse has AI since 1999 or something like that (I might be mistaken), which makes it only 7 to 16 years, depending on relativity, since they've developed AI. That's a really short time.

There's an early comic where Marten thinks Pintsize could live forever.

Marigold is almost bereft of life experience. Her maturity won't match her age.

That isn't to say that we people on our early twenties know how to adult. I mean, I've supposedly been adulting for about 4 years now and that's definitely not what I'm doing.

It's just a matter of needing an adult, until you realize you're all the same age. Then you figure shit out, or so I've been told. I'm 22 and still living with my parents, I don't know much about adulting.

Pizza with kale on?

Momo likes cute kitties! More evidence that she wants to identify with humans as closely as possible.

Her CPU is overheating because of all the cross references it is making with the Victorian porn collection at work.

Well Hanners likes a wide range of written pornography, as seen by her interest in Marigold's yaoi compilation.

I suspect Hanners is kinky as fuck all, which is actually MORE conflicting for her than if she weren't so complicated. She has all these ideas and desires, but she couldn't let them happen in real life, because they're gross, and unhygenic, and oh my god, there are so many things that would need cleaning, sanitation!

This character reference is less based on evidence in-comic, and more on the joy I fibd in my own writing of creating characters that are so completely, impossibly conflicted between their conscious thoughts and deeper, instinctual desires.

I'm with Marigold on the subject of kale, I do not care for it, regardless of it's nebulous health benefits compared to other leafy greens.

I can believe it.  It gives me a disturbing mental picture of Hanners setting up a Dexter-like plastic-covered setting.  But for sex instead of murder.  Hopefully.

I mean, so far as we know, Hanners is undergoing a sexual revolution! I would expect more sexy and less sexy, just from the general dislike of serial killers, but at the very least, Hanners would hope for a low-maintenance personsa

This tells us a lot about Momo's deeper nature. She finds human males sexually attractive to the point where it interferes with her system functioning. Without going too much into it, I wonder just how functional her new chassis is and how sensation works for an AI? As Momo clearly does have experience sexual attraction and this chassis is fully functional, it might explain why she wanted to have it so desperately. She wanted to be able to have the option to experience it for real.

More importantly, how did this happen? Was it a conscious decision, based on aesthetics or is there a statistical likelihood that the programming that makes AIs imprint on humans will develop into attraction?

So, will Momo have a boyfriend one day or is she, like Hanners, a strictly 'look and fantasise, don't touch' sort of person?

Yeah Dale and Marigold's passion is verging on antisocial, isn't it? They really need to learn to consider the roommate!

Reading "A Fire in his Loins"? I guess the handsome fireman needed help from the EMT to quench the fire

It is interesting how Momo prefers old fashioned technology (reading a paper book) instead of just downloading the novel to her memory. Probably it gives a better (and more human like) experience (slow progression of story instead of instant consumption).

It seems Hanners likes pornographic novels (enough to make Momo almost blow her top). It is not the concept of carnal desires that frightens Hanners, just the messy and unhygienic details. As for Momo reacting the way she does, there is a comment by Jeph in strip #1658:
Quote
No one is quite sure who decided it would be useful for artificial intelligences to posess libidos, but it is generally agreed that it would be more trouble than it is worth to remove it. Besides, the horny little buggers would revolt.

As for "a day in Momo's life": As Momo now is back in bed, I guess this is the end of the Momo arc. Too bad, I would have liked a strip with Hanners and Momo interacting. Perhaps Momo will get up, and rush to Hanners in tomorrow's strip? With all that unreleased libido, that can be risky...

There is the possibility of one or two more strips. It depends if Momo is active after Marigold and Dale have fallen asleep.

Hmm, cale. I like cale. It´s traditional here in northern Germany and one of my favourite dishes. It is called "Grünkohl" over here.
We cook it a long time with bacon, smoked pork and small sausages which remind a bit of salami. It is served with fried potatoes and tastes best when it is reheated the day after cooking.

*yummy*

So Momo still has her libido. Nice touch. I wonder if she is aroused or rather embarassed by the book Hanners gave her.  :-D
May be she should attach a neckbeard. Sorry, I mean a heat sink of cause.

The hole Momo-arc is very nice. I hope Jeph has a nice idea for the next two days. Maybe Momo can actually dream?
Which raises the old question:
"Do androids dream of electric sheep?"

See you:

Now I wonder where in the North you're from, because the best thing about Grünkohl in my family have always been the sweet fried potatoes. Like regular fried potatoes, but with sugar added while frying, making for sweet, lightly caramellised crisp potatoes.

I really wish I could have had Grünkohl last winter. I'm in the southwest now, so finding good sausages for Grünkohl is difficult.

Same thing goes for hot dogs. I wonder where in Germany the border between "American Hot Dogs" and "Danish Hot Dogs" is. Hm. Now I really want some hot dogs from Annie's Kiosk in Sĝnderhav, with a nice view over the Flensburg fjord and Glücksburg.

I would guess her frequent blushing is some optional anthropomorphic add-on, designed to make her more human-like. But assuming it is a similar technology as in humans (expanding blood vessels close to the skin surface), it should also increase the cooling effect during CPU-intensive processes (such as reading pornographic novels). Momo has no blood, of course, but she must have some kind if circulating body fluid to allow cooling of her CPU and other energy consuming parts. I assume her skin surface gives sufficient cooling effect during ordinary activities. If not, she could consider getting a more fashionable heat sink than a neckbeard, perhaps worn as a hat:

Now I'm imagining an anthro PC who will open a heatspreader under their neck like a frill-necked lizard, when running too hot / under stress.

Like, you're just talking to them normally, then you mention something and suddenly *foomph*.

My laptop PC is like that, sometimes the fan speed increases drastically, creating a *foomph* like sound

As mentioned above, I guess Momo has some kind of circulating fluid cooling system, dumping excess heat through her skin (additional benefit: Her skin temperature would be human-like). Air cooling through her nostrils could be a supplement (I guess Momo is breathing, otherwise it would be creepy). Today's overheating event (with steam coming out of her ears) could be an emergency cooldown system (creepy, but sometimes necessary).

Hmm, that would be about 2.2 kJ per gram of distilled water converted to steam.

This would imply that her internal cooling system has an intrinsic high pressure/temperature loop that allows the dumping of a large amount of heat energy by phase change of the coolant from liquid to gas. This would most likely be a design feature put in place so as not to overload the normal cooling cycles capabilities and put other systems at risk of overheating.

Now what subsystem would be responsible for this massive extraneous heat build up?

We can surmise that her various processors and subsystems used for day to operation is not a likely cause.
Since this chassis is a premium model we can expect a minimum amount of German/Japanese/ Scotty over engineering.
Processing data also seems to not put much of a strain on her systems as evidenced by all but a few select occurrences when working with large blocks of data.
What seems to cause this overheating relates to the internal visualization processes, imagination, dreaming and especially with respect to libido in particular.
The first instance was back in her old chassis when we found out that AIs in general do have a libido. This was corroborated when she was indexing the Victorian Porn section of the Library database. There were other instances that I can not recall all that accurately at this time.

Now to wait for the book to be put into pre-release "My girlfreind is an android"

@Thrudd: Thank you for the impressive engineering spec. We could speculate what causes the overheating during sexual arousal in robots, but if it involves genitalia, I guess we should not go there (although it would have to be addressed in the hardware design). Let us just say that sexual arousal is CPU intensive, generating excessive heat that has to be dissipated.

Sweet, after Momo cools off and has a quick nap we'll get to see her nighttime vigilantism! Criminals of Northampton beware, your days are numbered when the Crime Eater Ms. Magenta the Biblio Technician Judge, Jury and Electrocutioner Momo in a leather jacket is on the case!

Or maybe she just goes to sleep. Even odds.

Actually, if memory serves her hair on this chassis acts like a Heat Sink/Dissipater.
