WCDT 2966-2970 (25th to 29th May 2015)
« on: 24 May 2015, 07:14 »

Last week, whilst he was doing the 'Hanners skin condition' strips, Jeph mentioned that one of his reference photo searches had 'horrified' his girlfriend. What could it have been? I admit to being clueless so I tried to be as broad-spectrum as possible in my poll options.

Onto more serious things, what will this week be about?

Jeph has done a good job at surprising us for a couple of weeks and yet he hasn't really drifted from the long-established themes of Questionable Content and what we should expect of the characters. With that in mind, I'm wondering if we're going to be going back to Faye's journey or possibly even to Dora's own manifold problems.

Something totally out of left-field: One customer at the convenience store isn't an idiot, treats May like people rather than a self-service checkout and, in the grand sitcom tradition, May doesn't find him fascinating, attractive or his visits to buy a newspaper in any way the highlight of her day. No sir. Indeed, given a chance, she will tell Momo, Dale and Marigold this at length literally until her power cells run down and she has to go over to sleep mode.

I want to see Dora run into Faye

Awkwardness, hesitant conversation and exposition followed by Coffee and hugs.

That should about cover four weeks of Comics

I still think that's our 3000, barring Claire coming out to people. What we COULD have is a Marten and Dora talk about Faye. Whether it's him trying to encourage reconciliation or actually getting a bit upset for once.

Well I can't see Hanners showing it off, but otherwise, yep.

She might show the scar.

I think there'll be a strip or two with Faye/Hanners post growth removal, past that I don't know. It's been at a point where Jeph can take the comic where he wants (no real pressing issues) for a bit so it's up to him where he goes from here.

On one hand, I'm impatient to get back to Claire and Marten--though mostly Claire, to find out what's going on with her internship and future at the library.  The Momo storyline was fun (and necessary for Jeph's emotional/mental health at the time, of course), and it would be great to revisit some of the other characters in the same way--a week or two of Claire-centered strips (with Marten on the periphery, if present at all) would be nice.  On the other hand, I hope Jeph sticks with Hannelore and Faye for a few more days.  Hanners hasn't had much focus lately, and if this week goes off in a different direction and doesn't use this recent health scare to maybe address some of her issues, then it feels (to me, at least) like last week's story was just a joke at Hannelore's expense.  "Hanners be crazy, lol."

I wonder if Hannelore now has a new favourite doctor? Certainly, she feels more at ease with her and is able to talk to her. It will just raise the risk of Hanners stalking her! I'm also more and more sure that's the doctor who looked after Faye.

The news post just reads 'me.png'. Well, Jeph did say that this arc was written from personal experience! Once again, I find myself coming back to my thesis that all the enduring characters in QC are archetypes of bits of Jeph's personality (exaggerated for comedic effect, of course). Hannelore is primarily his anxiety and fear of the wider world

It looks like Butt's disease can be transmitted via computer.  If it is the case that it has jumped the human/machine barrier, then a robot like Pintsize running around in our 'verse is only a fairly short matter of time.

But if this stays a one-time-encounter I doubt that her comment will have a lasting effect on Hanners.

Yeah, love that doctor. She's like, perfect for Hanners. Shame she works at the walk-in clinic so she can't be Hanner's doctor from now on.

I'm actually undecided in what I want to see. Maybe some more  Hanners shenanigans?(This time without yucky medical stuff) Band practice? Everybody at a bar (Faye, of course, with virgin drinks and discovering she actually likes them)? Steve?

Pictures of skin diseases, surely.

A second-hand book dealer I once knew mentioned that whenever he got in an old medical textbook on skin diseases, it would sell amazingly quickly. Clearly there are some who are creepily into that sort of thing so I'd suspect there's likely to be lots of disturbing picture-hosting sites not actually aimed at medical professionals.

For my own mental well-being, I'm not going to investigate  further to verify this.

I just noticed something, Hannalor has been wearing the same tanktop, and shorts for at least a week in comic time now (sense the Juicy incident). How is her OCD not kicking into overdirve about that situation? A possible plot for more Hanners/Faye screen time?

There is quite a good chance that, like me (I also deal with OCD, though to a much lesser extent), that she has multiple articles of clothing that look exactly the same.  When I buy clothing, unless it's something for a special occasion, or anime/band shirts, I try to make everything pretty much the same.  All of my boots look alike, for example.  I did force myself to break some of that mould when I had to move to sunnier/hotter climes, and started buying stuff that is in grey instead of black.

Possible, but even so, it's looking like the collage is about to start a new term, which means it's September, or close to it in comic time. And it is New England, which isn't exactly known for it's blistering heat. Colder weather will be on the way, and tanktops + shorts are not going to be able to cut it for much longer.

Poor Hanners! I really think that we are heading for a moment where Faye sits her down and tries to 'deprogram' her anxieties. Like a lot of people with her condition, she's now desperately searching for some kind of reason to believe that she 's ill!

Am I the only one who hear Faye's southern accent come out in the last panel? That usually only ever happens when she's surprised or under stress.

Hanners' characterization feels a bit jarring to me here - she's always had the OCD "quirk" and she's concerned about germs and such, but it feels like fairly large leap to this level of "running around screaming, waving hands in the air like a muppet" hypochondria.  Her attitude is just *bugging* me, but I suppose you can't please all of the fans all of the time.

FWIW, I think Jeph is reminding us that these problems - hyperchondria, germaphobia and OCD - are still present in Hannelore's life. She's made enormous progress during her time as a character in the strip but these problems are still there and she still has to fight them. Sometimes, as in this arc, she can't win and, as we saw during the car trip, anxiety and a far-too-good imagination is sufficient to reduce her to close to a breakdown.

The sad thing is that Hannelore will be fighting these demons for all of her life. She's just lucky that she has a fairly sensible friend, in the form of Faye, this time, to help her cope. Without Faye, Hanners would likely have likely worrying herself into a serious breakdown that may have left her effectively disabled for some time.

Your pants are on fire and you killed a man earlier.

I read this on waking up, and I am incredibly sore all over and surprisingly pantsless for no apparent reason.

What I'm saying is that your guess is frighteningly possible.

It wasn't a guess, Cold has the CCTV footage. Blackmail specifics to follow shortly.

Please... blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer 'donation enticement'.

But that has no x, and the x is what makes it sound cool.

Time for Marten to show up.

With the worry hat. He does not seem to need it at this time.

Wait... Blackmail doesn't have an x either... I am confuzzled.

Although extorsión, which is the Spanish translation, does have an x.

I doubt she'd be happy to see Gregory House treating her tho.

It would be entertaining though.

I think House would meet his match in Hanners

Especially with Faye with her.

Poor Hanners,

The succesful treatment has obviously done nothing against her anexieties. Her fear of undiscovered illnesses appears weird for someone who doesn´t suffer from hypochondrosis. But to have to life under such fears every day must be terrible.  :-(

Artisanal note: it has been a long time since Jeph pronounced Hannelores lower lip in the comic. Last time must have been somewhere around #2500.
And I like the perspective in panel two. Hanners head large and Fayes smaller. It gives the panel a nice depth. Again and again I am delighted by Jepphs sense for details in his comics. Very good!
