Clinton, get a clue! She just walked up to you, smiled, complimented you, reminded you of your last time together, and HELD YOUR HAND. Is it gonna take a whack from a clue-by-four?

Probably yes. Speaking as a person who has trouble parsing social cues.

Sometimes I think I'm ASD, but if so, mildly. I can parse social cues aimed at others okay (years of practice).  Aim a social cue at me, and it is either going to go over my head (my reflexes are not fast. I would not catch it) or I'll see it but SOCIAL ANXIETY! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!/1/1/111111ELEVEN

Clinton didn't seem to have that social anxiety problem, but social cluelessness? Yes. Emily is a random social hook up he arranged sight unseen and ended up being someone he's mildly afraid of (because she summons elder gods at compile time). His Model for "manhood" is, by his own estimate non-existent and his model for dealing with women seems to be his life with mom and Claire. all other things aside, he seems to correctly assume that his sibling rivalry thing with his sister is not how you start a relationship, and he probably doesn't want to be playing beta punching bag with a girl anyway.

In short, there're a whole lot of reasons he would be immune to clues, right now.

That said, clues from Emily could mean anything.

I'm also not sure that Clinton wanted to see Emily again, based on his reaction in panel 2.
Oh, he does want to see her again, but when he's managed to make himself feel in control of the situation by careful preparation and planning, not now when he'll have to think on his feet.

Being thrown in the deep end like this might yet be the making of him... or it could be an excuse for a whole trail of comedy. We'll see.

You assume that Clinton wants to associate with Emily.

Look at his body language and what he's saying during the entire interaction. He's pulling away from her. He does not want this interaction to happen.

To put it another way... I think he's realized why it was so malicious that Claire hooked him up with Emily, and "screwing up" is now no longer one of his concerns.

He's nervous but to claim that he doesn't want to interact with her on a conscious level would contradict the way he was talking to Claire about her - Her opinion clearly matters to him and he wouldn't keep on talking about it if he wanted nothing more to do with her.

What I think this is about is that, fundamentally, he does not know what to do. That's manifesting itself as a subconscious fear response. Add on to that, Emily is an extremely tactile person and someone, like Clinton, with only limited socialisation experience may be made uncomfortable by this.

Actually, his lines are slight toward Emily in Panel 3 and Panel 4 his near arm is being lifted, which would tend to tilt his body away. His expression seems mildly dry, as opposed to repulsed, repelled or afraid.

He probably doesn't want this, right now, but he's not necessarily against going with it. Insufficient data.

Were I to read into it, I'd guess that he's reacting to Claire in Panel 4. That is, following the haircut comment with the tattoo was enough to remind him of what his sister said just moments before

If that is what's going on, I'd feel really sorry for Emily, considering what we know about Emily's history.

We now Break from our regular scheduled events for another week with the relationship between an unique young lady and an utter pillock.

this should be entertaining, if only to see Clinton wallow in his own uselessness.

Whenever Claire is even a little mean to Clinton, there are inevitably people who accuse her of going overboard. My opinion of these people, of course, is that they are probably only children. lol

Granted yes I know that not every pair/set of siblings is like this, but usually when you've been stuck living with someone relatively close to your age for most of your life, and they in turn have been stuck living with you for all of theirs, it doesn't matter how much you care about each other, you *are* going to get on each other's nerves, sometimes a whole heck of a lot. And yes, the catty banter is part of that wonderful package deal. :P

No, I just treat my younger brother like a person, you know? Yes, younger siblings are annoying, but Clinton's 21 and Claire's 24, and they're not living together any more. Clinton's living on the campus while Claire still lives at home. At this stage, sibling relationships change - you don't see each other that much any more, both are out of puberty, parents don't have that much influence any more, so you can actually enjoy the time you spend together because you don't have to spend it together at all. So, if they were 10 and 13, those insults would be normal and very usual for a sibling relationship, but they are adults now, with responsibilities and limited time. Why would you choose to spend that time with somebody who just insults you?

Your post would have some merit, IF Claire seemed like she was actually being serious. However, she doesn't, so I feel like you're being overly critical just for the sake of it (as people in these forums seem to have a habit of being). And even if I'm wrong, and she does mean some of what she says, so what if they still bug each other? It's not like they only see each other once a year and spend the rest of the time hundreds of kilometers apart. They might be living under separate roofs, but they're still in the same city, and given Clinton's age he probably hasn't been away from home for very long yet either. Their sibling dynamic probably hasn't really had the time or space to evolve beyond the "Mooooom, he won't get out of my room!" stage. A little bit of snarkiness also doesn't necessarily mean that they wouldn't still do anything to help the other out of a bind either. That's the wonderful thing about sibling relationships, you can be meaner than rattlesnakes to one another, but when the chips are down, you still have each others' backs. lol

[snip]

Some sibling relationships are all unicorn farts and puppy kisses, while others come just short of strangling each other with the telephone cord. What I see when I look at Clinton and Claire is a happy medium, prooobably leaning a bit more towards unicorn farts. :P

So, maybe I didn't express myself correctly - I didn't mean to say that Claire wants to be mean, she just is. Clinton didn't mean to be creepy towards Hannelore, but he was. She's just not a very nice person, but some people put her in her place (such as Faye) and some people don't.  I'm sure she cares about Clinton, and that her jabs at him are meant to be friendly and all, but there's a fine line between friendly jabs and insults (for example 'Such a male stereotype - you're better than that' is a jab at his actions, but still supportive, but 'talking to you is so boring' is just insulting. If she had phrased it differently, it might not have been, but tact and courtesy is something Claire demands of others but not herself.)

There can only be one!

Then it'll be Claire. Cutting her head can't be easy with all the ClaireHair around, and Emily took a scissor to her incredibly smooth and straight hair, basically freeing the way for beheadings.

I just had a vision of Emily, in old age, as some kind of crazy dog lady. And a squirrel perched on her shoulder, because Emily.

The squirrel being a descendant of the one Momo knocked into oblivion and attacking every single pink-haired human-looking thing that passes by in revenge.

I still don't understand what a "date" is.  Even with the longest-term ex, I don't think that we ever went for official "dates", we just merely spent time, et good food, and otherwise spent time together.

I'm having a Maison Ikkoku flashback here. Where the tennis guy, wossname, proposes to wossername, the girl with all the dogs, because he thinks he's gotten her pregnant, when it's one of her dogs that's pregnant.

Meanwhile, in her secret underground lab, Faye is creating the ultimate Murder Engine that will murder ALL THE DOGS.

DOOOGS!

I like dogs. Dogs are fuzzy.

I have a dog too. Her name is Luna. She is fuzzy. And very nice.

Emily likes dogs. She is not fuzzy. But the dogs like her.

I like Emily. I think Luna would like her too.

Clinton likes Emily too. His hair is fuzzy. But he is not a dog.

He does not act like a dog too. He acts more like a sheep. Sheep are also fuzzy.

Sheep do not like dogs in general. Does Clinton like dogs?

If Clinton does not like dogs, will Emily still like Clinton?

I'm broadly satisfied that Emily is human. However, on occasion, there is something about her that makes me wonder if she is a relative of David's.

FWIW, a storyline where it is revealed that Mr or Mrs Azuma either used to work for Ellicott-Chatham or still do and that Emily was a gift to them from Dr John after it was revealed that they couldn't have a child of their own would be plausible. In this scenario, Emily may not be aware of the fact that she's a synthetic but that, as the years have passed and she has 'grown' (a really sophisticated human-simulation chassis) a part of her has been increasingly aware that there is something 'different' about her. This is leading her to strange behaviours as she tries to identify what is the cause of this sense of difference. Or maybe her AI algorithm came from the same batch as Pintsize, the infamous "Defective Batch 2005/ECC/1125/****", originating from when a summer intern at the labs spilt a soda on one of the data junctions in the AI algorithm generation mainframe.

I wish I had the ability to summon dogs at will :/ Actually I wish I had the ability to summon cats at will...
I'm guessing Emily doesn't really need to work (based on the really nice, fairly large lake-side "cottage" her parents own, they're probably pretty loaded), so a fairly low-stress job like dog-walking isn't implausible.

Emily looks easy to write dialog for - just have her say one thing and then repeat it for the rest of the comic. Jeph did it here too.

I don't think she's a dog walker...I just think she goes to the park to play with dogs. Can't say I blame her.

From now on, this is what Emily's voice will sound like to me.

This would be a good excuse for Jeph to bring back some old character we haven't seen in a while.  They come to find their dog, spend some time with Clinton and Emily, then freak out when Emily leads them to Coffee of Doom and they encounter one of the regulars.

She was the kind of character you'd like to see an Acme 1000lb Anvil drop on permanently

The Paul Schrader version was fairly interesting, but you should really try to see the Val Lewton Cat People from 1942. Beautifully made, it uses suggestion rather than special effects, and has a terrific performance from Simone Simon.

WRT today's comic, Clinton needs to strap himself in; life with Emily will never be what he's expecting. She's crazy and smart, and could take him places he'll never forget.
