Overall a QC shirt design featuring any character wearing a t shirt that said Some good cat names: and a list similar to that, would become a cult classic   :-)   I do very much support the idea of an 'infinity mirror' type t shirt featuring a character wearing a t shirt with the same design as many times as would fit!

Bubbles brings up an interesting point. Can anthropc's experience ptsd the way humans can? From what I know of it, PTSD and PTS are caused by not fully processing trauma. In humans, it can be caused by the most random things too-I've seen case studies where a person falls and suffers PTSD symptoms, while a person hit by a train in a tractor does not. It has also been linked to a variable heartrate, oddly enough, as well as the element of decision making, or an ability to leave a situation. 9/11 had less civilian presentations of post traumatic symptoms then survivors of hurricane Katrina, as of my 2011 Psych class.

Therefore, can Anthropcs become traumatized to the point of illness? They process information, albeit digitally, they have emotions..they don't have a heartrate to measure, but perhaps that doesn't matter for them.

I can't confirm or deny it, but the comic is numbered 2030, rather that the 2020 it should be.

So. Marten just had another one of those brief moments of clarity where he realizes how profoundly weird his life is.

Referencing an old strip almost verbatim. Also, it's not just the robot combat, it's "My roommate who is a recovering alcoholic is now working as repair technician in an illegal underground robot fighting league that I thought was a joke". There's a bit of a stretch there.

The new comic is quite good and maybe the '2030' is a reference to look back at 2030 and see how it is a bit similar ; maybe Faye will hear from Angus soon, I am not sure who in New york could fully appreciate his nuances.  looking forward to the possible visit from Angus and he can attend one of the matches!!

So, Bubbles. My theory: she isn't an AI at all. She is, in fact, a human ex soldier injured badly enough that they were given a total body prosthetic, robocop style.
If Faye paid the least bit if attention to the news five years ago she would have instantly recognised Bubbles, who was quite infamous for a while. Especially after she was banned from the paralympics for life (apparently "WD40" is on the list of illegal doping substances).

Poor Marten! Is it too much for him to get a tiny bit of normalcy and complete unexceptional lack of weirdness in his life?

Oh, and Faye? You fail at keeping secrets. I don't think that it matters in this case but you'd better have a more plausible response for others! The complete brain-lock 'Oh my God, what do I say?' for an entire panel didn't help.

Actually, I think that, taken in parallel to this Tweet, it means that Jeph was worn out after a tough day and typed the numbers in the wrong sequence; I know that I do that sometimes!

That's it?  No concerns about the fact that half the rent now comes from dubious sources?  I always though Marten was a bit too Lawful Good for this sort of thing to slide so easily.  But I guess that's what living in a place like (this depiction of) Northampton does to a fellow.

Right now, I think he's too drained by the fact his personal reality won't settle down on 'normal' to worry about that.

FWIW, it is more likely that he would worry about Faye getting in trouble than the source of the money. He has struck me as knowing enough about AIs and how they live their lives to have confidence that, irrespective of the letter of the law, it would be nearly impossible to abuse them in this manner if they didn't want to be.

He might come round to that, but actually it's Faye's problem, not his.
It's not like he's receiving stolen goods.

Interestingly, at least in British law at least, it is the landlord's problem, not Marten's. If it is exposed that Faye's rent is coming from illegal sources, the landlord would be held responsible for not carrying out reasonable checks to verify that he was not receiving 'immoral earnings'.

Does that apply to earnings from any crime, or just prostitution?

That may be exactly the idea. Some brothels are run as "hotels" for the prostitutes, who just happen to use it as their workplace as well. That way you punish the pimp/madam.

Apartment leases in the US generally have clauses relating to illegal activities while on the premises.

Is that the same as illegal activities OFF the premises, though? (even if the proceeds pay the rent)
I can see that the "immoral earnings" rule might apply, if (as questioned by Akima) that includes other than prostitution.

I don't know about the legal aspect of "immoral earnings", but I will say that if illegal ones were a problem, I'd be homeless.  Quite a few of the flats I have had were paid for by employers who regularly flouted labour laws, like the whole overtime thing, and whatnot.  If I actually had money (or still being with someone who had a sister who could put that whole "jd" thing after her hame), I would have taken my last three employers to court.

I doubt the legality of her money will be an issue in the comic. It'd be a bit boring to have juridical proceedings as a plotline. It's kinda played for laughs anyway.

Just so. I recall reading that landlords can, or at least could, be prosecuted for "keeping a disorderly house", which usually meant allowing their building to be used as a brothel. But paying the rent with money earned in a shady manner outside the house? I don't know.

In Massachusetts I don't think the landlord could be held accountable for a tenant's off-premises activities. There's no way the landlord could reasonably know that Faye's income comes from an illegal activity that does not take place on the landlord's property. Especially since Faye had a legitimate job when she moved in and likely hasn't notified her landlord of her change in employment - she wouldn't legally be required to give such notice.

Now, if Faye was doing something illegal in the apartment, the landlord would be well within his rights to terminate the lease without notice and evict both Faye and Marten. But that's not the case here.

Found a template rental agreement here: http://rentalleaseagreement.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/massachusetts-residential-lease-agreement.pdf

As long as she's not using the place as an APC training room, she's probably good.

It's not really insurance fraud. It's more of "Accessory to illegal robot fights". Not that insurance fraud is unethical. Most insurance companies will actively try to avoid paying out their policy, so they're acceptable targets.

I've said it before, and I'll say it now.

I think the Fight Club is, techically illegal, but is one of those activities that the Govt turns a blind eye to unless it becomes a problem or too 'Exposed' to the general public at large. So long as it's kept 'Under The Rose' so to speak, they'll take no action as it's an outlet for both Humans and AnthroPC's.

Undobutedly, the Feds do the odd Raid on the places just to show they're keeping to the letter of the law, but otherwise, they do the old 'Nod, Wink' about it unless, as I mentioned, it gets out of hand or comes too much under public scrutiny.

Well, the way those things usually come about is when there is no money or publicity points to be earned stopping it. Making big noise about drug busts is good to keep that War on Drugs funding coming in. Traffic stops and DUI checkpoints keeps the ticket money coming in. Prostitution stings usually happen to appeal to the morality patrol types. Big cases of violent crimes like assaults or murder? Good for the reputation. But someone stealing car stereos, breaking into houses or an underground robot fighting right that few people know about? ehhh... If they can get around to it.

Yes, I am more than a little bit jaded.

Poor Marten! Is it too much for him to get a tiny bit of normalcy and complete unexceptional lack of weirdness in his life?

Dude's been to outer space, owns a robot, and works in a library with Tai and Emily and what's-her-face.  That would be actually a LOT to ask, but consider this:

Is Marten better or worse for having gone through this journey?  He's touched so many lives, and I think he's rubbed off a little on each of them.

That's an oversimplification. When Marten mentions his life being profoundly weird back in 1666, he was getting started in a way. Any way you put it, Marten has been running into wacky shenanigans for the entire run of the comic, and doing that can be exhausting when you get to a certain point. Let's be honest, no life is truly normal, but this dude's is off the scale.

EDIT:  Oh, and Tai's friend.  Was her name Delilah?

It's okay, Marten doesn't remember it either.

Give me an example of a dehumanizing slur that would be acceptable.

It's interesting that we've never seen Marten's landlord, or any apartment manager/maintenance person the apartment might have.  You'd think Pintsize's shenanigans would have led to at least one instance of someone showing up to paint a wall, fix a broken door, etc.

We haven't seen the landlord since they signed for the place.

I actually think that's the broker, so SCW may still be correct.

Oops, the L-word just slipped out.

A distraction from the real discussion?

Oops, wrong comic.  I have not been doing well lately.

I thought that at first too, but the subsequent comics solidified it as the landlord, for me, anyway.
