He got a better offer from Downton Abbey.  Watch for him to show up next season, playing Lord Sniffwhistle.

I don't know, I feel that Randy appeared solely because Yelling Bird was around. But I'm ok with his departure as filler, so long as the holidays appearances still happen.

So does "final Yelling Bird strip" mean the final strip with Yelling Bird in it or just the final one of these specific types? With YB just sitting there and yelling (and I guess sometimes being eaten?)

According to Jeph's twitterz, it's the last strip of the "Yelling Bird, Sitting in a tree, F-U-C-K-I-N-G... up the whole tone of this comic because of reasons" style.

I'm thinking it's largely 'cause Yelling Bird is a misogynist prick, and Jeph no longer sees the humor.

I'll follow that with "Good for Jeph."

I'd take nothing over Yelling Bird. Really.

I'd rather see no update, or a "my bad." Yelling Bird was never entertaining to me. Just a huge let down. No update doesn't make me stabby. YB does.

This comic is a graveyard of characters, jokes and themes that Jeph abandoned because he no longer found them funny or applicable.

But, in each of those instances, he simply stopped writing for them.  (What's Raven up to these days?)

I find it telling that instead of simply letting this joke slip away into the land of forgotten toys, he made a very overt and public statement about how there will be no more YB.

It's not even particularly like there's any risk of someone's favorite character disappearing, unless there are people who read this strip specifically for the Yelling Bird filler.  Unlike, say, Raven.  Or Steve.

Well Mr J is correct that the character was stale and of limited depth. [how deep is a bedpan anyways?]
I could welcome a foul mouthed commentator if they were a bit more nuanced and creative.
Something along the lines of the main character in Grrl Power when it comes to invective while following the rule of funny or maybe an bit over the top sarcasm - I miss Hello Cthulhu and the dancing Marshmallow [but my aim and tracking is improving].

I actually don't mind Yelling Bird in small, occasional doses. His profanity was always new and creative -- which may have been making him harder and harder to write for. (How much new profanity can you come up with?) An entire week of YB was too much, but as the very occasional filler I kind of liked him.

(I'd rather have YB than that evil, insipid Randycoot. Ugh. Gives me the creeps.)

So long, YB, and thanks for the occasional amusement.

The bird is dead. Long live the bird. ( )

Nah, in seriousness I agree that it's a door naturally closed. Humour's moved on and so shall we.
Intrigued to know what might pop up in its stead-I'm most open to something completely new, to be honest! (Or even just more guest strips and Thanksgiving turkeys)
I've quite liked the 'Vital statistics' single-panel posts about the robots (and I suspect attempts to do sassy versions of this for the humans might be in the offing) and would hope that any future ones are spaced out quite a lot if used as filler comics in the future. It's the kind of thing that risks fatiguing really quick if done too often, imho.

(And now, for some reason I'm singing "Goodbye Yelling Bird" in my head to the tune of "Goodbye Leggy Blonde" from Flight of the Conchords. Yelling yelling yelling yelling, birdy birdy birdy birdy etc.)

ah found it

Harriet: "This is NOT a Burrito!"
Shame Orb: "Sure it is. A Burrito is nothing but disgust, disappointment and disillusionment and eventual public humiliation wrapped in anxiety and spiced with fear."
Yelling Bird: " **** **** in the **** **** that keeps burning my Cloaca and singing my tail-feathers every-time I **** or ****."
