As mentioned in the other thread (d'oh!):

Grim Fandango (so original and involving)
Planescape Torment (Best RPG EVAR)
Legend of Zelda (The SNES one, the subtitle eludes me right now)
Street Fighter II (original and best. Actually, did anyone ever play Street Fighter I?)
TIE Fighter (ace plotline and a view from the Bad Guys side for a change)

Thank you.  That reminds me that Link to the past is also in a three way tie for favorite.  The similarity of Four Swords and LttP in design is awesome.

Korlin, Link to the Past is the one you're thinking of I'm sure.  I did play SF 1 quite a bit back in the day, a tiny convience store out in Clallam Bay, WA use to have it (Clallam Bay being third to last town before falling into the ocean) and it was awesome.  Saget was the main boss as far as I remember

Yep, I played it.  The sprites look absolutely HORRENDOUS.  And it had characters like Birdie the hulking chained brit punk and others who made it into the "remake", Street Fighter Alpha/Zero, which was supposed to be a prequel to SF2, taking place around the same time as SF1 but making it actually not suck and make sense.

If you play the CPU in an Alpha game, though, prepare to get your ass handed to you.  Especially Alpha 3.

I like Wind Waker, but it's not my favorite. It has the best plot and most life and fun, but the sailing was poorly done, the Triforce quest at the end was ridiculous and, overall, it was too damn short.

I abhor Four Swords though. It was fun for a little while until I realized how stupidly easy it was. It was a game built entirely on nostalgia and a gimmick, which isn't good enough.

My favorite is pretty much the least favorite of many a person: Majora's Mask. It was refreshingly original(especially after the overrated rehash that was Ocarina), complex, and, best of all, free flowing and non-linear. Brilliantly made, but I understand why a lot of people wouldn't like it.

Ahh yes, Link to the Past, that was it. Absolutely fantastic game, although I never was able to finish it. Got to about the 6th dungeon in the dark world (the one on turtle mountain) and was stuck. I still remember the shakes I got after defeating the game's first temple boss (six huge bouncing knights) because of the ryhtmic thudding of the enemies and the eeeeevil music.

Ahh, good times...

In other news, Fave Planescape character? I'd have to say Dakkon... Although Annah was cute. Actually, anyone know of any mods/extensions to the game, like, fan-made?

Too many great games out there, also too many crap ones.  I postulate that shit games exist in order to make us truly appreciate the masterpieces.  But to rattle off some of the best, Chrono Trigger (for true), Morrowind, Deus Ex (PC of course), Half Life, Curse of Monkey Island...

And Smash Bros Melee rocks, even if i do always lose at it...

Majora's Mask.
Majora's Mask made me feel things that were wholly unwelcome. Failing Anju and Kafei comes to mind. There were times I could've cried. That's happened three times as a result of a story, and I won't be forgetting Majora's Mask as a result. It's not my favourite Zelda game, but the story is probably at its strongest there.

It isn't as good on the replay value, if you ask me - a bunch of the new stuff feels like novelty for the sake of novelty. Original, though, to be sure.

I never owned a console before, now my brother has an XBOX at home, but having never really played them I can't stand using the controller and everyone beats me at everything. So all my favorite games have been for PC: Deus Ex, Half-Life (1 and 2), Knights of the Old Republic, and StarCraft (which I played way too much in my younger years).

...Okay, that's not true. I've played a very limited amount of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when my friend had an N64. That was a really cool game, although I hadn't played any of the other Zelda games (actually, I still haven't.) Chrono Trigger as well. That I played... umm... in a questionable manner let's say.

It's hard for me to pick one best game and ignore the different genres they fall under. So I'm going for the game that entertained me for the longest time, which was StarCraft.

For older systems, it's gotta be Chrono Trigger. Too many endings and sub-quests for any normal mortal to complete. Brilliant storyline, brilliant characters, just brilliant.

For newer systems? Not so sure. There are plenty of really good games, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any one that I could call the best. I'm playing Jet Set Radio a lot lately, for no reason, so let's just go with that for now...

Edit: Now I think about it, Shenmue, I fell in love with that game. Let's go with that instead.

then again, i think my life is crap and RPG's are a great escape, ans so are consequently take up most of my small library of games (my friends get mad because i have so few multiplayer titles)

I do that too.

Most involving, fun, stylish and generally awezome:

Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2. Those are, imo, the two best roleplaying games ever, or just the two best games ever, full stop. Torment is really the kind of a game that, if I could only choose one game to play for the rest of my life, that would be it. I sincerely recommend it to anybody, from the bottom of my cold and withered swedish heart.

Most enduring pleasure:

Super Mario Bros 3. I played that game for years when i was younger. I still catch myself thinking of booting it up again a few times each month.

The Specialists. I've played it for a hell of a long time now, without really stopping for other games more than maybe a week. Truly superb and exhilerating game, or mod, rather. If you like to try, it's free and can be found at www.specialistscentral.net; free provided that you own vanilla Half Life, of course.

Those four would be the ones, I guess. Tied first place, or first place in different categories, if you will.

Damn, tough one to answer.  In terms of hours played, that'd be SoF2.  Sucked up about 2.5 years of my life in terms of online gaming.  In fact, SoF2 is how I know Jeph.  :)  Played that game for 12-18 hours a day for a few months straight.  Just totally owned it.

Half Life 2 features quite nicely.  Awesome graphics, awesome gameplay, wicked story (minus the ending).  KotoR and KotoR2 were also nice time sucks.  Halo, Halo 2.

The entire Civilization series.  Ownage.  Any Sim City that wasn't 4 or higher.

The Fallout series.

Ultimate racing game:  Burnout 3.

So many more.  Oh god, I love my games.

This is just about impossible to answer if it is just one.  The things that make KotoR beutiful time sucks is going through to play the different alignments and classes.

I like Fable.  It has a pretty good broad skill/ability system that I like, sometimes classes are great but sometimes it's mucking about.  I stopped reading alot of the build up and hype to games at the begining of last summer and it helped to make gaming more fun.

Metroid Prime 2.  I hardly play because it feels wrong to just casualy play it.  This may be crazy talk to some and it is my (not so humble) opinon that Metroid as a FPS trumps both Halo games.  Then again I don't own Live or even have any sort of online access at home and some how ended up with friends not as big on FPS.

My name is Ray and I'm an unabashed gaming addict.

Grim Fandango! I totally and utterly forgot about this game.
Wonderful wonderful characters, brilliant plot, beeeeeautiful locations and fantastic script. All put together make one of the finest puzzle-adventure games ever created. I've yet to come across a game where I felt so deeply for the characters as I do with this game.
I highly reccomend it to anyone who can find it, it is rather old now, so would be a challenge to find it.

Good luck trying to get Grim Fandango to run if you've got XP. I tried everything I could think of and couldn't get it to work.

Speaking of games I wish would work on my computer, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the original System Shock. While I wouldn't give it my #1 vote, it is widely viewed as one of the best games of all time.

System Shock 2 is freakin' amazing as well. The atmosphere is phenomenal... it's the creepiest game I've ever played. Anyone who says Half-Life scared the bejeezus outta them should try SS2 with the lights out. Those damn spiders sent shivers up my spine.

As for best game ever, I dunno. I'm an oldschool nerd, so I'm going to be the first in this thread (I think) to elect NetHack.

Actually, Grim Fandango runs fine on my XP box. I dunno what you're doing wrong...

For my favorite games, I'd say Phantasy Star 4 (Genesis) as my fave RPG - it just blows FFVII away in story, and in the coolest villain EVER....
For action, it's a toss-up between Gunstar Heroes, Vectorman, and the Armored Core series. All are just great stuff.
For artillery-shooter, Gunbound. It's free, it's awesome. Go get it now if ya haven't.
For racer, NFSU. Not 2, 1. It just rocks...
And finally, for arcade/oddball game, Dance Dance Revolution (either Extreme2 or 3rd mix). I loves the DDR. I loves it good.

The Best Game Ever really depends on what genre you're looking at. If you are, for example, looking at the flight simulator genre, then the Ace Combat series really tends to dominate it. If you are looking at something a bit more open ended, like the RPG genre, then you get alot of stuff to think about. I guess FF7 WOULD be on my list if it was a bit more challenging. Or at all challenging. On the other hand, I guess that depends on who you are. I beat it before my friend did. My friend was already at the final boss when I started. Plus he was using cheats.

In any case, I guess the only game generic enough to score the best over all would have to be pong.

I still have an original pong. It's the bee's knees.

Works fine on mine I'm afraid, don't know what you're doing to not make it run. The only problem I have, is when I try to run any graphics acceleration, the characters disappear. I can still run around, just, can't tell where I'm going.

Well put point.  RPG isn't quite fitting for most games it is applied to.  I have to say I've had a strong itch to pay some D&D lately and it's annoying to have friends who always want you to DM.  The first FF is as close to RPG as you get in my book.  Lost my train of thought.  Heh.

I'm going to disagree. Even though I wasn't into it, I remember the beginnings of D&D; my friends were all about their characters. So, regardless, an RPG, IMO, is a type of game that is based around character development. I don't use D&D and RPG synonymously, but I do believe they go hand-in-hand because of the content. If FF is about character development, then they're an RPG. If someone is a D&D nazi, then they need to get over the use of the RPG label IRT other games. Linux, Windows and OSX are all OSs just like Morrowind, FF and Fable can all be RPGs.

I don't know, I've never been able to apply an RPG label to a futuristic anime-style game.  Just can't.  They're awesome games, but I don't put them in the old-school RPG genre.  But that's just me and how I classify them.  Not an attack against them.

Didn't mean it as an attack on the FF series dude.  I was just stating that I pretty much agree that FF is not what I'd consider a RPG.  I like the series (for the most part, I don't care much for X or X-2).

Plus I wasn't just meaning FF.

I'd consider Fable more of an RPG because of the more choices you can make going more torward good, evil and even neutral.  Both KotoR I'd consder an RPG for sure.

Why does an RPG have to be fantasy based? Star Ocean was pretty decent, I consider that an RPG. There's a reason for labels, labels should be generic, like RPG, FPS, RTS, etc. When you start putting borders on things, then the creativity suffocates and the fans suffer. Bottom line, drix, or whatever his name is, frodo and orcs don't need to be an RPG requirement. I might not like FF, but I do think they belong under the RPG flag. Unless someone is so devoted to one game that they don't want to ruin the elitist vibe by letting other games share in the label?
