I'm a major arachnophobe, and I spent years trying to learn as much as I could about fucking spiders to try and convince myself they weren't actually the spawn of hell.

If only those books had talked about spiders' big ole booties

Why is everyone so afraid of spiders?

<----*had tarantulas for pets*

Look, if a spider be chilling in its web, not moving, we're cool. It's those fucking LEGS, man, with the skinny, skittering little limbs and the half-dozen shifty fucking eyes.

Not to mention the unholy size of the goddamn banana spiders around here, who always put their fucking webs right where you're cutting the grass, riding the mower until you're suddenly surrounded by Satan's silk and there's a fucking octopod with fangs on your body somewhere, crawling down the back of your neck. Then you hit the side of an 80 year old equipment barn, and you KNOW what caused it.

As you see. Horror stories.

Try being less than 10 and reading the scenes in LotR with Aragog, then learning some spiders build nests underground with trapdoors, so they can quickly snap up and snatch their prey, in this case, hobbits and similarly-sized folk. I'm cool with spiders in THEORY, but I can't look at them, and I'm literally making myself nervous reliving childhood nightmares by typing this.

Spiders are fucking horrifying. Essential to life as we know it, fucking fascinating, but oh my god can we just not?

I ain't pressing play. Don't even fuck with me, bro. I had to re-do an hour's worth of paperwork my last year at camp because this fucking child thought it would be funny to shove a spider in my face while I was holding coffee over the papers.

In other news, I think Gordon's candy-like color scheme is working, because I kinda like the dude.

Maybe it's the non-moving bit, I'm cool with unmoving arachnids in general. Like I said, if they chill, I don't fuck with spiders. They built their web, they can STAY there. It's the legs and the skittering that get me, and Gordon seems largely skitter-free

Poor Gordon! Imagine the torment of his existence: He's a friendly guy who genuinely wants to be an asset to the community and a pal to all. Unfortunately, his chassis creeps everyone out to the point where even fellow robots don't like being in physical contact with him! Someone, somewhere, is pulling a horrific prank at his expense!

For some reason I imagine Gordon sounding a bit like Robin Williams.

I like Gordon. I'm not at all afraid of spiders. Gordon is cool.

Now, hornets, wasps, yellow jackets, and other related spawn of Satan can go back to the hell that they flew out of.

See, I imagined him as sounding like someone with a deep voice, like, unnervingly so for a small robot. Like, Keith David, I guess?

I imagine Gordon being able to modulate his voice into whatever he wants, but mostly choosing to.sound like a Speak N Spell just to fuck with people. (Rollin' with the running joke)

EDIT: Or maybe Twiki. Or even Peepo.

play. Don't even fuck with me, bro.

Glad to see you watched it in the end.  Even I'm not enough of a bastard to post a video with actual arachnids.  Your previous comments in this thread *strongly* reminded me of Lister in that scene.

Do you imagine Gordon talking in a tachikoma voice?

I do now.

First off, chaos, that's a wonderful save. I actually laughed out loud at that.

Now back to the topic at hand (Grodon's voice): I always imagined him to have a voice like Claptrap's, or maybe lower pitched.

On the other hand, I'm about as well-sighted as Faye (My vision is 20/1600, where legally blind is 20/400) and I can say personally that at least on gun ranges, they consider glasses as thick as mine to be equal protection to protective goggles.

Debris from grinding can come at the eye from many angles. It's not quite the same as blowback. Goggles would be the thing.

That said, lots of people with tool skills will flaunt best practice and carry the scars to prove it.

Yes, no substitute for side shields, even though my optician told me once that my polycarbonate lenses could stop a .22.

It's pretty clear that this is close to Faye's dream job - cutting open someone so they can go back to inflicting destruction!

Here's my concern: Working for the URFC (Underground Robot Fighting Championship) is ultimately going to turn out to be destructive and negative for her. For all the enjoyment and fulfilment it gives her, it's ultimately reinforcing negative personality qualities, to wit sadism and using others for her own amusement. I wonder if she's eventually going to have to quit because she doesn't like the person that it is making her become.

Indeed, I thought there was something disturbing in her facial expression tonight.

I'm wondering if Bubbles is going to be Faye's voice of conscience. Confronting Bubbles' disdain for the URFC and its associated culture of violence is going to force Faye to realise things about the job... and about herself... that normally she keeps completely suppressed.

Faye is excellent at ignoring her own better nature. However, there are people in her life whom she respects and, when they tell her that she's in the wrong, it tends to batter through her stubborn personality and tear off the blinders.

You use words I don't know, so I assume you know what you're talking about.
Swarf. I would wear gloves, a long-sleeved top, hearing protection, and goggles as a minimum for grinding.

Faye's expression is a bit disturbing. Is she about to grind off that robot's spikes? Or sharpen them?

I thought about that Faye face, and I looked again, and I'm not sure it's all that disturbing.
I mean, that is one possible interpretation, but another is that she has found a job that is a perfect match for her skills, and she's simply really enjoying doing something that she is good at and that not everybody else could do, not only for the required skills but also because she doesn't apparently have a problem with the context.
And after all, she is doing repairs, not damage, like an army surgeon.

Yeah, I think it's that. I really hope it's that.

Also, for all the arachnophobes: This is how I got over mine. Peacock spiders. Tiny (half a centimetre), completely harmless spiders from Australia (yeah, I know), but all you need to know is in the name of a subspecies: Sparklemuffin. No, really! Those are miniature, colourful jumping spiders who dance and wiggle their butts if they want to mate.

On the protective gear thing, Faye has been shown doing metalwork without any amount of protective gear worth noting. I just chalk that up to artistic preferences and not care too much.

The sparklemuffin spider has me seriously conflicted.

I laughed in (low-level) terror. I did not know that was a thing.

I don't think Faye has ever been shown welding with an appropriate mask and apron. Having known welders and seen their slag-burned hands and arms, this is consistent with the real world. Her failing to use proper eye wear when doing griding is also consistent with such. It's still a bad idea.

I know way too many people who only learned that proper safety equipment is a good idea after being injured in a manner safety equipment would have prevented. Very few weren't trained in the use of said equipment. In my misspent youth, I made the same stupid choices.

Artistic choice or not, it's still a fairly bad idea to grind without goggles.
