You didn't find her side comments amusing at all?
I did, because...
Meanwhile, it looks like Claire is having another one of those experiences where it is revealed to her just what a surreal social circle she's gotten entangled in via Marten!

I also found Claire's comment in the last panel to set the tone beautifully. Without it, Marten's defeatism wouldn't be as poignant.

It's just an AnthroPC checker. It dings when used on an AnthroPC. The twist will come when they try it out on Dora and it turns out she's been an AnthroPC all along.

Am I the only one who feels the comic would almost have been better without the Claire side-commentary? I like her fine, but she just seems... redundant, in this one.

Actually, it's kind of a throwback to earlier "side-snide" strips. Except instead of it being Marten-Dora-Faye it's Marten-Hanners-Claire.

She's being a viewpoint character, like a hobbit or a Greek chorus, to anchor us and keep us aware of how bizarre the other characters's lives are.

Because my mind is strange, I now have it stuck in my head  that Claire is a chorus of Greek hobbits. Thanks.

I wonder what it does, simply turning off AntroPCs would be too easy I suppose (and would be a zapper instead). Swapping consciousnesses with an AntroPC might seem somewhat  far fetched.

anyone else think this is starting to relate to alice grove?
Now you mentioned it, it does seems like that. In that case Hanners might become Alice as she has both the resources and technology to put her in that position.

Hmm. If I were going to tie them together, I'd say mother of Alice. Alice is much less baseline human than Hanners but Hanners would have the coin and facilities to make Alice possible.

However, I believe Jeph recently reiterated that Alice Grove is NOT the future of QC.

Yeah, but even if you ignore my hatred for treating word of god as canon, Jeph lies and jokes all the time, so AG could very well be QC's future.

So says a (presumably, from this comment) non-busy person.

A phone call lasts minutes, more if there's time- related conflicts. A text takes seconds to read and the same to respond. Voice-based communication is only better if it's in-person

How does it take longer to say what you were going to type? If he answers the phone, it's as fast as texting, if not faster.

This little arc has thus far felt very "Classic QC" to me, I'm digging it. Riffing in the coffee shop on A Weird Thing with insight from two characters and asides from a third is a formula that really grooves with me, and it's a throwback to my favorite "era" of QC. Marten and Claire's almost-matching expressions of "DOY" in the last panel makes me smile. Also, I don't know if it's just me, or does Dora's face look supremely unnatural in panel two? I can't even put a finger on what's off, it's just...odd.

Social niceties, among other things. It can't be like *ring ring* "What's this thing you sent me?" "It's a/an (x)" *click*

True, but you can't call your dad, "The fuck is this 'byooo' thingamajig?" have him answer and then hang up. There's so much more social etiquette around phone calls. That's what makes texting more efficient.

Sure, you'd need to add "thanks, bye!" but other than that there's not really anything that's necessary.

Now that I think of it a thank you would be needed if you were texting, too.

Well this is an extremely unscientific and dissatisfying way of finding out. "Just ask". The puzzle is the fun bit, and then testing limits, alternate uses, and other hypotheses. If you just ask, all you have is an answer, and likely one that isn't as meaningful/interesting as one that is hard-fought.

Although, it's good not everything has to be learned that way. We'd never get anything done.

And, Hanners, call your dad. Parents like talking to their kids sometimes.

It's not just you; I think Dora's face is evolving. Noticed that when she was talking with Sven, too. Jeph's drawing her eyes bigger/browner and her lips, uh, lippier? I'm not an artist.

Third me on weird Dora face. I think it's the mouth - it's got a weird fish-mouth vibe to me.

Dora, sit down please. I want to explain something to you: Just asking Dr Elicott-Chatham is not fun! 'Fun' is to speculate wildly about what it could do and then to run around town doing random and potentially-dangerous experiments to determine the Doohickey's function! FWIW, I do suspect that was the good doctor's intention when he sent it to Hannelore, all whilst laughing his 'mad scientist laugh'.

Meanwhile, it looks like poor Dora is still having to be the voice of sanity, reason and the like for her friends. From the expression on Claire's face, this realisation came as a deeply unpleasant shock!

Hannerdad's return text: Oh god, I sent you That Device instead of the sterilizer I developed? We've been tearing apart the station trying to find it. Don't open it. In fact don't even look at it! And whatever you do, absolutely do not point it at someone and pull the trigger! I'll send a containment team down right away!

Hell. My dad butt-dialed me a week or two ago. It lead into five minutes where we both wanted to hang up, but felt obligated by social expectations to say something more than 'sorry, this was an accident.'

It also has to be answered at the exact moment (nobody uses voicemail), and even if you choose to ignore it and call them back later, stopping it from ringing loudly for a full minute requires an active button press. I've gotten irritated at my brother for calling rather than texting when I'm in the middle of a round of a video game.

I don't know, if it's something I don't have to know RIGHT NOW, I'll text or email, just to give everybody time and space - probably the explanation for the thingamaling isn't that easy.

I prefer calls, but only if it's something that needs to be handled immediately or would require three or more text messages.

No, it induces parthenogenesis. Hanners, Claire, and Marten are all going to be mommies.
