One could argue that the entire course of Western civilization led inexorably to the moment when it was possible to have pizza delivered from orbit.

Given that the Visigoths invaded the Roman Empire because they wanted food, I'm not sure that's the right term.

The real question is this: Is it easier, in terms of targeting accuracy and energy costs to lift the mass into orbit, to bombard from orbit with tungsten rods or pizza?

How many times did they press that button? And why aren't the pizzas falling on CoD?

Maybe the roof is full of them now, together with some dead raccoons.

Hey Y, uh, could I have some random numbers? No reason, totally not gonna use them for the Lotto or anything...

I wonder how people discovered olives. "Yuck, these small fruits are not really tasty. Let's soak them in brine for half a year and try again"?

I imagine it's more like "yuck, these small fruits are not really tasty.  Let's dry them and grind them up for the hens.  ...hey, that's pretty good!"

(Three thousand years later...)

"Okay, the ham jar by the expeller... wait, what are these?"

(Aren't all olives pickled?  I thought the difference between green and black olives was ripeness.)

While it's in Lo-Fi mode, today's last panel seems to portray Dora like "Wait, pizza?"

I assume she'll enjoy the tasty treats from heaven, or maybe make it today's special or something.

I agree with Marten: Dr Elicott-Chatham has a lot of interesting hobbies! I'm pretty sure that this started out either as a military project or a humanitarian one to drop rescue packages to people stranded in isolated spots. However, he's found a more fun way to use the technology!

Personally, after Dora gets over the shock of finding a half-dozen space pizzas on the roof, I think that she's going to have the oddest special-of-the-day in the history of the shop.

That said, yeah, there is going to be a similar find on the roof of the apartment building. I have no idea what their landlord is going to think but it looks like Hannelore had better dust off that 'Living in a mansion somewhere' plan of hers because it might be the Plan-B that they're going to need!

It suddenly occurs to me that the way Marten and Hanners are treating this whole scenario tells you a lot about just how strange their lives are. This is seriously, seriously not a major weird event for either of them. It bodes well for Claire that she's letting this roll off her back too!

Well ... it would be pretty helpful in case Hanners ever gets stuck on an island.

After a plane crash or something.

Still dont get why Hanners dad would send her such a thing without further instructions.  :?

It would have been so interesting to have listened in on that 'phone conversation!

DORA: "Coffee of Doom! Caffeine with an unfriendly scowl! How can I help you?"

HANNERS: "Dora? It's Hannelore. Er... Is everything okay?"

DORA: "Everything's fine, Hanners! Don't forget that your break ends in 20 min..."

HANNERS: "D... Dora, can you do something for me? Please check the roof for me!"

DORA: "The roof? Why do you want me to...?"

HANNERS: "Don't a... ask me why. P... Please, don't ask. Just d... do it. Just check the roof and call me back. Please."

DORA: "Um... okay?"

Less than you think... depending on angle, by 5000 metres altitude it's slowed considerably, so impact velocity is about the same as if dropped from 5000m.

Depending on density and cross-section, that kind of shape might only hit at less than 60 km/h. If Jeph hasn't done research on it, he's guessed really well. Peak g-force might be 40g or so - 400 m/s-2.

The Genesis craft hit at 300 km/h, with a mass of 275kg and diameter of 1,5m, max decel 30g.  Assuming 15 kg mass, 1m diameter, 50 km/h is about right. Might be less. A 90kg mass with that cross-section hits at about 200 km/h.

Hm, this needs some testing. Fortunately MIT is just down the road, and I have a cousin in the engineering program there. "Design an orbit-to-ground pizza-delivery system" is exactly the sort of project MIT engineers would really get into. Especially if they get to eat the pizza after landing.

Nobody likes writing documentation.
So, on my Advanced Video Systems course I got 99.5% on a test.

I asked  "You deducted half a mark for a spelling mistake?"

Instructor said "I had to deduct you for something.  You were clear and concise on how the VCR worked.  Have you ever considered writing textbooks?"

Depends on when the 'chute is deployed. If you deploy the 'chute at say 200m above the ground, it'll quite possibly still be crispy.
