Aww, how could you forget the cute geometry dog?
Haha I know, especially since I stare at it for a few cycles every time I see it. I'm just forgetful.

then Berkshire

Snap (I'm from Reading).

I was born at 36 Silverdale Rd, Earley, Reading, Berks. But it was very different in 1958. The fields I used to watch the fox hunts traverse - now Lower Earley, tar and cement.

I grew up on a small farm outside a medium sized (50k population) city here in Wisconsin - midwestern USA. The farm isn't quite gone yet but only a little is left, with a golf course around two sides and developments on the other sides and just a tiny bit of the woods I grew up hunting small game in are left. Depending on the context, a generation is either the longest or the shortest length of time that matters.

Eau Claire, actually. I give great thanks to the divine that I am not from anywhere near Waukesha but that's another story...  :-o

Given the number of Pintsize-like chassis that have appeared in comic, and I'm sure there are a huge load of Winslow clones running around (Apple isn't known to vary their products much along a line), I assume that there are many that look very much alike.  I'm sure even Momo basically got a model that has limited options for variance, which would likely be limited to changes of things like artificial skin, facial shape and body-morph on an artificial skeleton.

Mai did not recognized Hanner's when they met.  So no surprise that Bubbles does not either.

I do wonder whether she realizes that the daughter of her father is that petite girl.

Perhaps her meeting with May made her rethink the idea of using her full name when introducing herself to AIs and creepy Clinton-types.

Shanghai has been transformed since I lived there as a little girl; it does not even smell the same. The rather "Soviet-looking" concrete block of flats we lived in is just gone (no loss), and the neighbourhood is unrecognisable. Here's a .gif showing the Pudong waterfront; I was five years old when the "before" pic was taken.

Edit: Moved the pic to a link.

Poor Hannelore...

I wonder what Bubbles reaction is going to be when she finds out Hanner's the daughter of 'The Father of AI'?

Considering how 'Fangirly' some have gotten *coughcoughClintoncoughcough*, it will be interesting to see how Bubbles acts..

Quiet angst and symbolic displacement of natural lifeforms. She burns very, very brightly.

Seriously, that has got to be the most explicitly dark event referenced in QC (except perhaps a few things involving Faye). Generally I sort of think of the world as this accepting utopia so while people or anthropc's might have issues it's something which doesn't seem as drastic. Where wars are fought on volcano bases by agents.

Damn this strip's heavy.

Well, that's sad but a lot of readers guessed that it would be something like this. So, I suppose that Bubbles' behaviour is some AI version of PTSD then.

Jeph did a lot of good work on Bubbles' body language in this. There was an element of defensiveness, as if she's got too many patronising or ineffective responses to that revelation and she was just waiting to see which one she got. I suppose that Hannelore got points for being honest about it.

OUCH.

Wouldnt humans be banned from the frontlines if AIs would be that advanced ? Seriously, even if you assume AIs are "sentient", they are still programs and you can make a backup of the AI at any time ... of humans, not so much.

Good point. An AnthoPC with a reinforced AI-drive like the fighting robots could possibly be taken out with a bazooka. But the drive (and the AI itself) would have a good chance to survive the blast.
A lot of questions come to mind here concerning warfare in the QC-Verse. But I am pretty sure Jeph isn´t going to pay this suject very much attention, at least on-screen. But he has written before that he gave this a lot of thought, so we´ll probably see some more of the consequences, especially for Bubbles.

Poor Bubbles

But I don't get why people are surprised. We have Hannermom, the evil corporate CEO who crashes other businesses for fun, her secret stealth plane that was certainly not build for milk runs and Deathbot9000 showed up *ages* ago. And don't forget Pintsize' sized chassis with lasers strong enough to melt things.

QC is not a happy, peaceful place.

Roh Ro.

I suspect Bubbles could do with a therapist - or a friend. Jeph's pretty good at characterisation, and the few times I've seen someone say something like that, something pretty darned horrific had happened to cause it.

I hope the QC gang can help her heal. They seem pretty good at that.

I'm not sure exactly from where or why, now, but I've had the idea for a while that Bubbles was one of the first wave of combat units - if not prototypes, then the first series in mass production and service.  If so, she was at the center not only of whatever armed conflicts she fought in, but the world around her trying to figure this stuff out.  And now that it has, or at least is further along in the process of doing so, she may fit into this new world even more awkwardly than many human veterans.

Keep in mind that AIs are a new race. As in, they just came into being in living memory. One of the first places that they would be pressed into service is in hazardous environments for humans, including combat. This would be especially true pre AI civil rights. But that doesn't mean the entire military structure is going to be dismantled in favor of a new, untested and unknown technology. Especially in the military which can be resistant to change when they have something that works. I also doubt that the introduction of AI combat units would mean they would immediately or even quickly retire their active duty soldiers. Given the relative youth of AIs as a species, then the most likely case scenario is that they would be assigned to existing squads of humans, as a training and monitoring tool, to see how they perform. And given the relative durability of an AI combat chassis, they are the one most likely to survive if something catastrophic happened to their squad. I imagine cases like Bubbles' are not at all uncommon. PTSD and survivor's guilt are very real and serious things. It can be hard to open up to people again. Especially people who don't and can't understand what it's like.
