Really BAD ideas (no politics)
« on: 21 Nov 2015, 16:21 »

I just read about a company that designs custom interiors for private jets. Want a hot shower installed with a stone floor? A dishwasher? They'll make it happen.

They got a request to install a fireplace.

For sheer bonkersnessitude, I'll be impressed if anyone can beat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Pluto.

EDIT: http://www.dailydawdle.com/2011/09/nope-nope-nope-root-beer-flavored-milk.html

Not as nope as Project Pluto, but... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_Nuclear_Propulsion#Direct_Air_Cycle

The root beer flavored milk is something I'd want to try once, I think.

Possibly more nope than Project Pluto, given how reliable American drivers are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Nucleon

I visited the place where they worked on the nuclear aircraft engine and learned some history.

They actually stopped to think about what would happen if an airplane crashed with a reactor on board.

So they took some spent fuel, full of intensely radiating fission products, piled it up outdoors, poured jet fuel over it and set it on fire to find out what would happen.

More than anything else, I think that sounds terminally silly.

Yeah, that's like when they rebadged the Commodore as the Caprice in the U.S.

Perhaps they were trying to avoid all the jokes about the Holden (GM) Crummydore (the equivalent blue-oval joke is the Ford Foulcan).

Speaking of the Commodore platform, how about selling the VZ Monaro in the US as the Pontiac GTO?

The first problem is that the fuel tank did not meet US crash safety standards, so to make it meet them, they had to relocate it to the trunk, like so:

The second problem is that we didn't have the VZ Commodore here, and therefore Pontiac couldn't say that their new GTO was based on a good model that people were familiar with. (Historically, the GTO was based on a mainstream Pontiac model.) I mean, it is a relative of the B1/B2 Cadillac Catera (read: Opel Omega), but that thing flopped so hard in the US... Instead, the styling lead people to believe it was an overbloated Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire, which is one of the most awful cars that GM has produced in recent memory (they've produced worse, but the Crapalier was one of their most RECENT cars with no redeeming qualities).

There were other oddities due to the VZ not being designed with LHD markets in mind (even though the Omega that it was based on was), as I recall.

It was a nearly complete flop, and honestly, I'm surprised they even brought the Pontiac G8 (VE Commodore) after that flop.

I think GM's attempts to sell Holdens in the USA had a lot more to do with earning "import credits" under Australia's weird and wonderful car import-tariff scheme. I'm not expert on all the ins and outs, and it might have changed in the last year or two, but the basic idea was that car-makers in Australia could earn "credits" by selling cars and car parts overseas, which they could then "spend" on importing cars into Australia with reduced tariffs. Since the only cars GM made in Australia were fairly big (Commodore, Caprice, and (in the past) Senator with engines ranging from 3.8 litre V6 to 6.2 litre V8 :-o), they used their credits to import smaller cars from their European Opel range (and more recently from Hyundai; I don't know how that works).

I came up with one of my own.

I track my weight on my Device but often there are no scales on the road.

So, since personal devices now have pressure sensors, the bad idea is to have an app that weighs you when you step on the device.

I had this idea for a movie today, not sure how bad it is.

A remake of "Liar Liar" about a washed up actor who must go 24 hours without using a racial slur.  Starring Mel Gibson.

So I was doing electrical work and wished there was an easier way to identify which circuit breaker needed to be switched off to kill the power to where I was working.

Then came the bad idea. I realized I could both locate the breaker and turn it off in one operation by shorting the circuit I was working on.

"Georgia man loses leg after shooting lawn mower full of explosives."

I stumbled across this, and my reaction was: "Wait... What?" Yes, it turns out that packing in three pounds of explosive into a clapped-out lawnmower, and then shooting at the charge with a rifle from twelve metres away is a bad idea. Who knew? Two of his friends though it was a good idea to stand next to him... Is it something in the water?

Yeah, that's "hold my beer and watch this" territory.

Which is why it was being filmed, because "hold my beer and watch this" is rural American English for "get 911 on speed dial and break out a camera".

"Hold my beer and watch this", when translated to the local language, is code for "bring the camera and an ambulance" literally everywhere.

This one is amazingly bad, and I'm the one who came up with it.

Bubbles loses control, punches Faye in the midsection, Faye is rushed to the hospital, and it turns out she was pregnant and the blow caused a miscarriage.
