postal service or iron&wine???
« on: 09 Jan 2005, 13:58 »

i've recently been introduced to the indi scene and have just started my music collection. i noticed that on the postal service's give up and on my sound track of garden state there's the song "such great heights". on the garden state soundtrack the song is performed by iron&wine. i really like the song, but i wanted to know, which song came first? is the postal service covering iron&wine or is iron&wine covering the postal service?

anybody know?

I've never heard either band, but 10 seconds on google tells me that Postal Service covered or remixed Iron and Wine.

hmm. I thought it was the other way around? Of course I've never loked in to it though.

Irona & Wine does it better. Not that that has any bearing on this thread.

Well Give Up was released almost 2 years ago now, and the Garden State soundtrack was just released a few months ago, I assume the Postal Service the song.  I'm not entirely sure though.

The version by Iron & Wine could have been previously written and simply addded to the soundtrack for the movie.

So I'm really not sure. Does anyone know what album Iron & Wine's version came out on, or if it came out on one at all [other than the Garden State Soundtrack]? If we could find that out, then we'd know.

Wrong. It's a Postal Service song that I&W covered.

I like the I&W version better.

I was listening to a review of the movie on the radio, and heard the familiar "boop-ba-boop-ba-bee-bo-bee-bo" intro to "Such Great Heights" in the background of clip from it. I yelled "yes," which made my mom swerve a little and we almost hit another car.

P.S. For those of you who have not read the R.L. page yet, Jeph hates Ben Gibbard's lyrics. I highly agree.

*Re-reads his googling*.

Ah. of course. I read the brackets for the cover version thing the wrong-way round. My mistake.

As everyone else has already said, The Postal Service wrote it.
I love ben gibbard's voice! especially in the song "Nothing Better"
I just ordered give up.

Besides all this though, I do prefer iron & wine's version of Such Great Heights.

Not his voice, his lyrics. He's a good singer, I just don't like what he sings.

I'm a huge DCFC and Postal Service fan.

Am I the only one that likes the Postal Service version better?

Damn me and my electronica weakness....

i cringe like hell when sam beam is forced to sing gibbard's lyrics. couldn't he have cut half it out or something?

also on a completely different topic, iron and wine + the shins have been really abused in soundtracks to crappy movies. especially 'in good company.' i think they threw in two shins and two i&w songs in there. (in lieu of a decent screenplay.)

Lately, my favorite version of the song is the techno remix by John Tejada, which comes on The District Sleeps Alone Tonight single. Its has steel drums and a thumpin' bass line.

Looks like I'm the only one here who doesn't like Iron and Wine.  That's fine, that's totally cool.  I don't even care.

You know what else?  I don't like Belle and Sebastion.  Or Pedro the Lion.  Or Pete Yorn.  Or Ben Jelen.  Or Josh Groben!  Not even Damien Rice!

In fact, I hate all those acoustic, sensitive, balladeers!  All of them!

Except maybe Elliott Smith; does he count?

PS - The Postal Service rocks my face off.  But, Death Cab is... well, decent... I guess.  Sort of.  I like the song "New Year"

I dunno... I kinda liked Garden State. I guess I thought it was less than the sum of its parts though.

I struggle with the fact that they covered that song so quick - you're supposed to cover old songs and so something new with them, damn it! I like The Postal Service's version better, but I'm a huge fan of Iron & Wine. I just don't think Mr. Beam can pull off Mr. Gibbard's lyrics.

On a related note, Mr. Gibbard cannot pull off Mr. Gibbard's lyrics. So no big loss.

yeah, isn't there a code of ethics for covering songs that decries that a certain amount of time passes before a cover?

i doubt that.   i agree though a certain amount of time more then a couple years should span the time between the original and the cover.

i'll say that i did like the postal service but they grew tiresome to me.  i like a good beat but alot of the music was...too much.  just as much as i like
star wars and other galactic funk
i can handle it in small doses.

1. I personally like Deathcab's older work better (and thats not just for indie cred...). They're spiraling downwards says me.

2. Iron and Wine's cover was better, in my opinion.

3. Other than Iron and Wine's cover, the others are mostly bad. I saw Rilo Kiley a few months ago and Blake did a cover of it. It was sub-par on a good day. Frankly, I'm sick of Postal Service covers.

thank you all for your help! i really appreciate it.

i actually think i like the postal service version better, basically because i love the postal service.

but i really love both versions.

and garden state was a very very good movie, even though it came from the main character of scrubs. the movie is good and the soundtrack is better.

I've had the postal service version forever. I heard about the other version from one of the indie guys at work but didn't know the artist... until now.
