I wonder why Momo is reading instead of downloading the content directly to her memory? I know for me that there's def types of reading i prefer to do with real paper, but it seems like for something so self helpy shed be more into content than process.

It helps with her ability to relate to humans.

... In my travels I frequent truckstops. At the coffee dispenser counters there are, more often than not, little creamer style plastic cups containing a substance called Stok. It's for adding caffeine to your coffee. The concept frightens me. The concept of someone piloting 40-plus tons of diesel-powered commerce while jazzing on it ... yikes.

Yep, yep.  We used to do the same thing on all-night coding runs, crumbling a no-doz into every can of soft drinks.  We called it "Coke with a Kick."  Does it make you any happier to think of the people who wrote your operating system or accounting software being wired to the eyeballs when we did it?

Well, the soft drink of the German hacker scene is Club Mate, a carbonated "ice tea" based on yerba mate (it actually doesn't have too much in common with it). It has 20mg/100ml caffeine, so a 0.5l bottle has 100mg of caffeine, which is two and a half of these Stok shots.

The wiki of our hackerspace has a category called "Tasty things with Mate", which contains edible/drinkable and unedible/undrinkable mixtures on the basis of Club Mate. Starting with the common cocktail "Tschunk" (crushed ice, chunks of lime, cane sugar, rum and Mate) and going as far as the "GewürzKoMa" (a diced gherkin, cane sugar, Korn schnaps, crushed ice, Mate) which was developed as a desperate and surprisingly drinkable substitute for Tschunk, when they ran out of ingredients during a party.

The wiki also contains the Mate++, which is Mate with a caffeine pill. Also called Mate EL (enhanced lethality). According to the wiki the highest somebody ever took this was a Mate+6 (that's 6 pills, with 200mg each. This results in 1300mg of caffeine. Lethal doses can start at 2000). There's also the possibility of putting guarana powder into the Mate, which makes it a "Mate of Insomnia". The wiki also mentions a prophesy, according to which somebody who consumes a Mate of Insomnia+8 will cast off the yoke of sleep forever. It fails to mention that this probably works by dying.

Well, I wouldn't consider death and sleep the same thing. Sleep is your body regenerating. Death is your body degenerating.

Both involve not being awake. Death is, from the relevant party's perspective, just dreamless sleep that never ends.

...probably.

That's not entirely true, though. "Awake" is not a binary thing. Sleep and wakefulness are different brain states and different levels of consciousness, but you are still conscious, the brain is still functioning and processing information, from both internal and external sources. In death there is no consciousness or brain activity.

That, plus the earlier reply about espresso shots taken straight -- explains quite a few things and a few people of my experience and acquaintance.

New comic up!

Sometimes, I do find myself thinking that Bubbles enjoys delivering these dry put-downs to Faye. I also think that, her denials aside, she does want and need someone to whom she can say these things. She's admitted these truths to herself a long time ago, of course. Saying it to someone else...? Well, that's a different thing altogether.

Plus... Yeah... Building a microwave oven for fun? Each to their own, I suppose; we all have our little hobbies! Faye's, for example, appears to be semi-serious mockery of her friends.

Well, the title does just say "building a microwave for fun." It could be a microwave transmitter, or it could be a microwave kill-ray designed to cook Bubbles' enemies (Faye).

Well, sort of.  Among the Kaffeine Krew, sleep is often referred to as "Practicing to be dead."  But we're usually joking when we say that.  Usually.  Once you start to hallucinate, there's a risk that you may wind up doing it without nearly enough practice....

I would venture to say that Bubbles is one of the most interesting characters of the comic thus far. She's a complex cookie and  yet not too much is given away about her straight off-bat.

AnthroPCs sleep. Do they dream? Do they have nightmares?

The combination of human emotional reactions with a perfect memory seems like a recipe for chronic psychological pain.

I think I respect Bubbles more than I like her.

And it's unusual to see a character written like that so well.

I think it's a very interesting contrast against Tai, who I like a lot but don't respect. It's a really interesting spectrum of characters.

I've noticed that Bubbles has a pretty narrow social response lexicon. She uses the word 'uncomfortable' as a synonym for almost any unfamiliar emotion. When Bubbles says 'uncomfortable', I read 'out of my normal emotional zone'. So, there is no telling exactly how Faye calling Bubbles 'honey' really made her feel except that it is something that she really isn't used to!

Still, this is Bubbles' opportunity for revenge of a strange kind. Now it's her turn to stalk Faye, needling her and trying to get her to open up. Turnabout being always fair play.

I wouldn't survive long in  the South for many reasons, being called honey is least among them.

Given what I know of Southern cuisine, starvation is likely threat.

As for Bubbles, I think it's more likely the South wouldn't survive long.

Insightful!

It is subtle and easy to miss but Bubbles has a wide educated vocabulary for everything but feelings.

Nice dodging the question there Faye.
Dodging the question, or laying out bait?
See, she's got Bubbles curious now and actually engaging in reciprocal conversation rather than soliloquy or snark; a first!

Not 'think', she did. She probably pulled it more than slightly to avoid shattering her fingers and snapping her wrist like it was a twig, of course.

NB: No need to quote the post above you, it's assumed that's who you're responding to unless you say otherwise.

And ahh, didn't notice the clank, although that's hardly a traditional Faye punch. If Faye'd punched her, she'd have a broken hand.
