I will never understand watching someone else play a game for hours on end instead of actually playing it yourself.  My 11 year old son will watch Minecraft videos forever if I'd let him.  I guess I'm getting old.

It's the same reason that thousands of people watch other people move or hit a ball around an arena. :P For some people, it's just another form of passive entertainment; the LPer could be very skilled, or they may have a good personality and know how to keep an audience's attention, or a group of people could be doing something in a game that other people hadn't thought of before, etc. Some just share funny moments, while others share what's basically a cinematic playthrough of a game.

There's also the "I can't afford games so the least I can do is play them vicariously through others" angle.

My take on it is the Marigold sees her younger self in Sam (both Sam and pre-Dale Marigold were renowned for their piquant aroma). A post-pubescent Sam might someday gravitate to soft-porn gaming titles too.

Or maybe this is one of the few subjects that could get Marigold to reach out to someone outside her usual comfort area.

To be honest, I've always been on your side, but then I was linked to a particularly entertaining Game Grumps video, and to tell the truth, it's nothing to do with the actual gameplay. I'm not watching them play as much as I'm jumping into a conversation between friends about something they're passionate about. It's just fun to listen to their conversations

I'm pretty sure it's just now more comfortable with being open Marigold will just jump at a chance to talk games.

Though the fact that people she knows knows Sam probably helps.

I wonder if the CIA or NSA has considered recruiting Marigold for Field Work.

Cycling helmets are compulsory in Australia
Really? Even for adults?
Well, I wear a helmet as an adult in a country where they're not compulsory - if something happened (and stuff DOES happen. Like the time a taxi decided to pull out immediately in front of me while I was going downhill past a queue of traffic, too late to fully dodge or brake, and I bruised my hand badly on his door mirror) I'd rather at least reduce the chance of breaking my head.

And, since an elbow-breaking incident, elbow & knee pads too. (Actually, technically the helmet made that particular situation worse. While I didn't hit my head, I somehow managed to get a nasty cut from the chinstrap...)

I watch Lets Play videos and similar things partly for entertainment, partly because I might be doing something that keeps me from playing games, but can spare enough brain-cycles to watch a video, or to learn things about the game I didn't know before. And in some cases, to see if I want to pick up a game by seeing it played for a while first.

In some cases, Let's Plays can help you satisfy curiosity without actually having to admit to having played something.

For example, one of my favorite games: Hatoful Boyfriend.  It's a Japanese dating sim where all of your love interests are pigeons (or other similar birds).  It is every bit as ridiculous as it sounds, which is why I love it, but I can understand why people wouldn't want to spend the five bucks on the actual game.  (Especially back when I bought it, when just to play I not only had to buy the game but had to download a Japanese interface for Windows and change some computer settings because the game was not out in the US at that time.)

I watch gaming videos (including Let's Plays) for two primary reasons:
To learn how to get past a certain difficult spot or sequence;
To obtain maximum value (spending only time, not time and money) from "games" where the actual gameplay is minimal, repetitive/tedious or otherwise uninteresting (to me), and most of the story can be experienced simply by watching a linear playthrough.  ("Press X to view next cutscene.")

Personally I watch a lot of gameplay videos but only of boardgames. Wil Wheaton's Tabletop, Boardgamegeeks GameNight, GreyElephant Gaming Live Plays and Rahdo Runs Through comes to mind. Mostly to see how the game should be played before I buy/play it myself.

Oh dear, Marigold! Isn't Dale enough for you? Or is it that you have... er... urges that you feel that you can't discuss with him?

In hindsight, yeah, I can see why a fan of amphibians and reptiles would object to the themes of the Mario games!

Seriously though, I recommend Civilisation: Beyond Earth. You get exploration, construction and development. It isn't a sandbox like Minecraft but it has its charms.

I didn't know there was a film.  From what I've read, I suspect that the book is a whole lot more worthwhile.

It's entirely possible that May's holographic avatar was taken from that game. Remember she didn't have a choice about it, some algorithm decided that's what Dale would like and assigned that form to her.

Actually, I can see May being entirely unaware of the whole thing (after all, there's no reason why she should know where her virtual avatar had been before she used it). In which case her response to Marigold's shy approach for more information and, perhaps, services could get apocalyptically bad very quickly.

Alternately, May might be subtle, talk to Dale and then things get frighteningly funny, for a certain value of 'funny'.

May is subtle as a swift kick in the balls, so no. However, what I was referring to was Dale's preferences. I mean, if the algorithm said that May's avatar should be the maid from that game, it's pretty simple to assume that Dale played that game and others similar.

You can see my point, right.

That catboy reminds me of Ardent from Alice Grove.

And this isn't the first time Marigold has shown an affinity to spanking.

Since Faye called her a "larva" before, does that mean that now she should be building a cocoon around herself?  And yes, I used "cocoon" because we all know that Sam would much rather be a moth than a butterfly.

There's also the "I can't afford games so the least I can do is play them vicariously through others" angle.
Not to mention the "this game has never come out on any platform to which I have access without spending a bunch of money, but I'd still like to see it because I have heard that it's awesome.".

And then there's the instructional aspect. I watch commented walkthroughs of historical or modern professional weiqi games, for example, I know Starcraft II players who watch pro games on the same basis, and MOBA players do it too. Watching a play-through can get you past a point where you're stuck in a game too, although that should be a last resort.

I didn't know there was a difference, so I looked up moth cocoons. Then I realized I've seen them before, appearing cotton like, one day there were lots of them at work, even in a doorway that was recently opened. That day we ordered sandwiches from a nearby restaurant, and when I ate my sandwich there appeared to be something cotton like in my sandwich after a few bites. So I could say cocoons don't taste bad, they just have that same cotton ball texture.

I'll add "I'd be uncomfortable playing the game solo, but want to experience the story." I'm not good with horror games, myself, but watching Markiplier play them lets me see the story without jumping out of my skin while doing so.

Is it just me or does Sam look a little less "girl" and a little more young lady?
Well, compared with her firstsecond appearance she doesn't seem to have grown that much (for better comparison to the latest comic, her first co-appearance with Marigold). On the other hand, although it is hard to judge with her current attire, her chest-to-waist-ratio seems to have slightly increased, which in many cultures is seen as one of the signs of the transition from childhood to adulthood for women.

Indeed.  Kids tend to get a growth spurt around that time which is not unusual.  I had a friend in school that I had known for at least six or seven years.  When we met he was about the same height  as me when we met.  Four years later, he'd shot up close to six foot and was a full head taller than me.

I didn't finish growing until around the end of my freshman year of college.

Actually, I think it's that Sam's been given hips. Which isn't very surprising, since all of Jeph's females seem to have wider hips than they used to. I thought the same thing about how Emily was drawn a few strips back. Tai's another example.

Tai's a very good example of this. For the longest time, she had a very boyish figure; in the recent strips with her and Dora, she's almost got Faye hips. Quite the change.
