Open message to Jeph (serious drama post)
« on: 15 Feb 2016, 23:20 »

Hello everyone, I had something I meant to say to Jeph. I tried contacting him through some publicly available means (such as PM on this forum, the e-mail link in his profile...) but I've had no luck and I don't feel like using my work-related background check skills to get full contact info because that would be creepy and rude. Therefore I hope he'll see it here, or someone who is in touch with him can direct him here. If you're not interested in drama and shit try another thread

Message is as follows:

Hello Jeph,

I’ve been following Questionable Content for several years now. Specifically, I’ve been reading it since around 2008, when I was in secondary 4 (something like grade 10 for people not from the weird part of Canada). For me, high school was a mix of bullying, abuse, violence, and such. I wanted to kill myself quite often and was close to stabbing a few bullies (guns aren't easily available here). Basically, I was a danger to myself and everyone who pissed me off (which included myself).

However, at some of the worst times, something kept me from doing something really stupid (or messy). It wasn’t the fact that I was forced to visit the school psychologist every week, it wasn’t the few friends I had, and it wasn’t because of my parents (who were putting a lot of pressure).

Every night before a school day I’d either be at my computer hitting F5 around the usual time new comics appear or waiting to read the next comic the next morning, not thinking about killing myself or sneaking a knife in my backpack for a bit. I don’t know whether it was laziness, curiosity about what would happen next, both, or something else, but you most likely helped keep me from doing something quite bad. There were other webcomics and other factors, but the other webcomics were of lesser quality and the other factors usually annoyed me, for the most part.

I just needed to thank you. Thank you for helping keep my life in some semblance of order. It got better, and it’s still getting better. I still don't think I can return to my hometown and maintain sanity or safety, but I put as much distance as I can from there and avoid even going near that region so it's not an issue.

Please keep drawing Questionable Content and Alice Grove, don’t let the idiots who complain, act creepy, or throw insults at you bring you down, and stay safe.

You’re fucking awesome.

TLDR: Thanks for helping me not off myself back in high school.

PS: Could you confirm once you read it?

Jeph claims to read all messages to his email address.  That's how I contact him, though I've never had a direct response; it's still the way I recommend.  You'd be better not expecting a response, I think.

Tried that weeks ago. No response and no confirmation from the Mozilla Thunderbird read receipt.

Also no offense, but the way you put it makes it sound like prayer.

I'm sure he appreciates your sentiments even though he may or may not respond to your message.  And even we appreciate hearing from other members who have found something in the Comic that has helped them through difficult times.  :)

Many mail clients don't handle read receipts, and everyone I know turns them off.  So I wouldn't read anything into that.  If you truly want a direct response, your best bet is probably to go to a comic con that he's taking part in and speak to him there!

I think it would mean a lot to Jeph if someone at a con were to tell him he'd made a difference.

Going to a con in person was the original plan but I currently lack money and time and shouldn't have much of either for months, plus I'm rushing the easier stuff from my bucket list. I'm not at risk and I'm making a full recovery but spending a few days in coronary intensive care hooked to a bunch of monitors told me I shouldn't be too patient.

As the benevolent creator of this forum, whose appearances have become more rare over the years, but whose wrath has been made known in the past, I think it's an apt metaphor.

In nomine Maten, Faye, and spiritus Pintsize,

Amen.

Just wanted to say that QC has also helped me keep going through some serious depression, after I first found out that my parents wouldn't support my transitioning. Thank you as well, Jeph, though I know you won't see this.

I wonder how many more people there are who could say similar things.

Jeph mentioned in one of the books that he found out he'd accidentally saved someone's life.

I know I found it in a time of need.

I also know that the forums here have seen me (and many, many others) through some extremely dark times.

And for that I truly give thanks.

This is an awfully apt 10,000th post.

I used to have a lot of free time... mostly spent waiting in hospitals.

So, who or what do we sacrifice to summon Jeph?

Hmm.  If we did that, would the sacrifice not take effect until three months later, since that's about when Willis' strip buffer runs out?

Sacrificing vintage guitars would get a reaction from him but it would most likely be a negative one.

Yes, no guitar sacrifices please.

I'm sure he's out there but busy and maybe he elects not to interact with readers individually just due to lack of time.
