Skullord + marshmallows + fencing = danger.

I so hope that's where Jeph goes with this.

That's Skullmaster thank you; Skull Lord the Bone King was a completely different comic.

Jeph said that Skullmaster was just a week-ending silly, but I would like to see Dora handling Sam going into a sugar crash in the background as Emily and Penny discuss something in the foreground!

As for the rest, I strongly suspect that we're going to have a week of thoughtful discussion between Faye and Bubbles as they work on Punchbot's head. This has the advantage of having Punchbot on hand to say something silly at the end of every strip!

I feel that Dora is about to have a complicated conversation explaining to Sam that Faye doesn't work in the coffee shop any more. After diplomatically dancing around how to appropriately explain why, all Sam will hear is that Dora got rid of Faye. This would further strain their tenuous bond.

Comic's up.

There actually is a guy in Northampton who does that. Though I'm not sure if he accepts students Sam's age.

new Skullmaster in town? And current Skullmaster, master of skulls, is but a mere apprentice to a greater Skullmaster???

I need to see this person who dresses his pupils in skull faces.

In the comic, perhaps, but also outside. He and I have business to attend to.

"Mid-evil" sword fighting? Is that like sword fighting that is only mildly evil? Not full on evil, but not completely free of evil, either. Or perhaps he meant "medieval" sword fighting.

Given her Goth leanings, the Skullmaster mask works for Dora as a fashion statement! I also loved  the characterisation of Sam here. As I posted last week, she's kind of everyone's little sister. However, this confirms that at least a few of the cast also fit into the emotional role of elder sibling for her - the cool elder person that she wants to emulate.

I doubt that Sam picked it up but Dora made a profound point in panel 6: Most adults don't really completely understand adulthood themselves!

"Mid-evil" sword fighting? Is that like sword fighting that is only mildly evil? Not full on evil, but not completely free of evil, either. Or perhaps he meant "medieval" sword fighting.

Actually, it's Sam who means 'medieval'. She just isn't pronouncing it properly and thus earns bonus 'cute little sister' points!

Plot Twist:
Sam's Sword-Master is Hank the Dismemberer! He is an old and wise champion gladiator who can teach not only how to fight, but when to fight. "All these things, Samantha...? Ultimately, they are naught but shadows and dust!"

Seriously, I'm expecting a degree of angst on Faye's part when Dora tells her this 'cute story'. Faye really, really is unlikely to think that she is a good role model for Sam and might feel a bit bad about it.

I'm still hoping for Bubbles to get interested in Sam and try her hand, Master Yoda to the young apprentice being, at least in the terms of the ethics and philosophy of the warrior caste.

Given the mask is in fact protective armour for sword sparring, it's likely got foam padding inside to cushion the head from the force of any strikes. It also has probably got an adjustable chin strap and adjustable straps at the back of the head to ensure a snug fit. Think of it as a bit like a cross between a motorcycle crash helmet and a fencing mask.

I love these arcs with Sam, they are always a great mix of funny and emotion.
Looking back at Sam interacting with most people ( faye, Veronica, Momo, Marigold and now Dora), I can see her growing into a new central point in the whole story. She tends to bring out good things in people. Can't wait to see her with Emily or Bubbles. Emily might be a living warning about impulse control, and after Bubbles encounter with the power of tea, straight forward Sam might be the next push to step past herself.

ps: regarding Jeph's comment today ('After 13 years, with today's comic I have finally perfected Dora's "look"'), I'm afraid Dora will find it hard to take that helmet off. Probably a faulty chinstrap or a jammed hinge, but it might take a while...

pps: as this stuck helmet is an artificial addition to the body, perhaps another emergency trip to the Bubbles/Fay 'body-shop' is in order?

Just a few days ago, I was thinking about how QC as a whole has become steadily less relatable to my life. As a swordsman, this is no longer the case. Woo.

For real though, HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is the best thing ever. You get to hit people with swords, and they don't call the police! In fact, they give you one of those handshake hug things and pass you a beer.
Granted, the swords are made of polypropylene/vinyl or blunted metal, but even so...

Possibly Sam's sword.

http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Training-Polypropylene-Handle/dp/B001Q72ARC

Never used one, just rattan and live steel.

These ones are great, but have a really high centre of balance. If you put some lead pellets in the pommel though, they're pretty much the perfect bastard sword.

nah, aside from the poor balance, the blades are far too rigid for safe sparring. even through a padded fencing jacket, you're risking a broken rib if you take a hard thrust with one of those things. these ones are much better; they're well balanced, flexible enough to be safe without being 'whippy', and by all accounts practically indestructible.

Yes, Mid-evil; it is semi-evil, quasi-evil, the margarine of evil, the diet coke of evil, just one calorie, not evil enough.

Comic's up.

There actually is a guy in Northampton who does that.

You win.

I had help. I made a comment in last week's thread about possibly needing to know if anyone taught swordsmanship in the Northampton area, and BenRG sent me some links he had googled. There is a small chance my family may be moving out that way in a few months so it's something I need to research. This is the kind of swordfighting my son would like to do - we tried classic fencing but it wasn't his thing. He's now taking a kids' historical weapons class that uses foam swords for safety rather than real swords.

I don't know if the medieval swords guy in Northampton teaches kids or not. The info on his site seems geared towards adults, and anything to do with teaching kids is a nightmare of licensing and insurance so I wouldn't blame the guy if he doesn't want that kind of hassle.

She's certain she's not secretly a robot.

How did yes become certainly not:?

Pretty sure she's not openly a robot, either.

Let's not start a debacle like the one in the English Learners Forum.

P.S. Dora has helmet hair in panel one.  :-D

I think that Dora has underestimated how much Sam misses Faye and just how profoundly that the girl has imprinted on her friend. I'm pretty sure that Sam is going to get Faye in trouble with her need to be around her again but, ultimately, it will just be an excuse for something that would happen anyway.

She's a sword wielding junior highschooler known as the Skullmaster. She's the fixer for an illegal underground robot fighting ring.

Together, they commit crimes.

Why would one's butt vibrating be a sign that one is secretly a robot?

Or is the just Seven being optimistic hopeful polite?
